Miles Russell's victorious stretch continues with come-from-behind win at Sage Valley

Miles Russell just keeps winning.
The 16-year-old phenom from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, captured the prestigious Junior Invitational at Sage Valley on Saturday in Graniteville, South Carolina. The victory marked Russell's fourth straight against junior competition.

He's also won in four out of his past five amateur starts, including the South Beach International Amateur. He was third at the Jones Cup during that stretch and hasn't finished outside the top 10 in a non-pro tournament since last summer's AJGA Junior Players, where he tied for 16th.
Russell began the final round at Sage Valley trailing leader Joshua Bai, a Florida signee from New Zealand, by four shots. And through nine holes, Russell was three back of Bai, who went out in 1-under 35. However, Bai bogeyed three of his first five holes on the back before double-bogeying two of his last three to fall back to solo third.
Jackson Byrd, the son of former PGA Tour player Jonathan Byrd, pushed to 13 under after four birdies in his first 13 holes and seemed to be on his way to slipping on the gold winner's jacket. But Byrd, too, slipped up, playing Nos. 14-17 in a combined 6 over. He ended up two shots back of Russell, who carded just two bogeys in his final 36 holes; Russell bogeyed the last on Saturday but still shot a third straight 2-under 70 to finish at 9 under.
Charlie Woods, who received an invite into the 36-player field despite being ranked significantly worse in the two national junior rankings, posted a respectable T-25 finish at 11 over. He beat reigning U.S. Junior champion Trevor Gutschewski by six shots.

Canada's Aphrodite Deng ran away with the girls division, beating China's Yujie Liu by six shots at 7 under. Kai Trump, the granddaughter of President Donald Trump, finished 24th out of 24 competitors, 22 shots back of her closest opponent.
Russell's victory, which puts him alongside past champions such as Scottie Scheffler, Joaquin Niemann, Akshay Bhatia and Austin Eckroat, further improves his chances to make Walker Cup history. Should Russell qualify for this year's match at Cypress Point, he will become the event's youngest competitor ever, breaking the record held by Scotland's Connor Graham by four days. Russell is currently the 24th-ranked American in WAGR, though he has at least seven players ahead of him who are expected to turn pro this summer.
Ten players, including at least one mid-amateur, will earn places on captain Nathan Smith's squad, which figures to already have at least two locks in Auburn's Jackson Koivun and Virginia's Ben James. Texas' Tommy Morrison and mid-amateur Evan Beach have strong chances to make the team as well, while Vanderbilt's Jackson Van Paris and Auburn's Brendan Valdes, both seniors, attended last December's practice session and would be candidates provided they remain amateur.
The last high-schooler to represent the Americans in a Walker Cup was Bhatia in 2019. Before that, it was Jordan Spieth and Patrick Rodgers in 2011.

Lunden Esterline, Asterisk Talley win Junior PGA titles; Charlie Woods backs up to T-9

While the U.S. Ryder Cup picture is still unclear, the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team is nearly set. Lunden Esterline, a 2027 Auburn commit from Andover, Kansas, won the Junior PGA Championship by six shots on Friday afternoon and, in turn, earned an automatic Junior Ryder Cup berth. Esterline, who fired a second-round 62 to take control, closed in even-par 71 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Ackerman-Allen Course to finish the 72-hole tournament at 19 under. 'I'm still trying to comprehend the whole thing, but it feels amazing,' Esterline said. 'It means a ton. It gives me a lot of confidence going into bigger tournaments after this that I can do it, and I proved to myself this week that I'm just as good as anybody else out there.' Behind Esterline were 2026 Vanderbilt commit Tyler Mawhinney and 2027 recruit Guiseppe Puebla in a share of second. Mawhinney double-bogeyed the par-3 17th hole before capping his closing 69 with birdie. Puebla fired the round of the day by three shots, a 64. Because Mawhinney, who earlier this year teamed with Will Hartman to win the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, qualified for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team via points (along with top-ranked Miles Russell), Puebla received the automatic berth afforded to the runner-up. Esterline, Puebla, Mawhinney and Russell will be joined by U.S. Junior Amateur winner Hamilton Coleman and a captain's pick to be named Tuesday in competing in the two-day Junior Ryder Cup, which is scheduled for Sept. 23-25 at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black (singles only). Ayden Fynaut of Fresno, California, nearly had a solo second before doubling the par-4 18th hole. He tied for fourth at 12 under with China's Zenghao Hou, who played his final five holes in 4 over. As for Charlie Woods, he began Friday in the final threesome alongside Esterline, but after back-to-back 66s, he shot 74 to slip to 9 under and T-9. He was 12 under for the tournament until going bogey-double at Nos. 14 and 15. Woods likely will not receive the captain's pick for the Junior Ryder Cup. That pick should be extended to 2026 Vanderbilt commit Luke Colton, who is the second highest-ranked junior in the World Amateur Golf Ranking at No. 24, behind only Russell (16th) and ahead of Tyler Watts (40th), who is not eligible for the pick because he skipped the Junior PGA to play this week's Western Amateur. Colton, fresh off making the semifinals at the U.S. Junior, declined to the play the Western in favor of chasing a Junior Ryder Cup spot. Asterisk Talley took the girls division, birdieing two of her last three holes to help offset three bogeys in her last five. Talley earned the one-shot win over Zoe Cusack, who closed her final round bogey-double.

George Russell Admits Mercedes F1 Situation 'Not Assuring' for Him or Kimi Antonelli

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Mercedes Formula One driver George Russell has revealed that the past months have not been "reassuring" for him and his rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, given the situation around their contract extension that remains pending. Russell's and Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes contracts expire at the end of 2025, but with the summer break approaching after this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, there is no sign of an extension yet. Recent rumors about Max Verstappen's move to Mercedes in 2026 have put Russell and Kimi Antonelli under the spotlight, especially Russell, since he broke the news of Mercedes' talks with Verstappen. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also revealed publicly that he was interested in signing Verstappen for the future. But despite the four-time world champion's clarification that he will stay at Red Bull next year, the Mercedes drivers are yet to see a contract on the table. Russell has pledged his loyalty to Mercedes in the past, and when it was put to him if he should stop depending on Mercedes and look for other options, he told the media: George Russell of Great Britain and Mercedes and Kimi Antonelli of Italy and Mercedes chat at the driver's parade during the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone Circuit on July 6, 2025 in... George Russell of Great Britain and Mercedes and Kimi Antonelli of Italy and Mercedes chat at the driver's parade during the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone Circuit on July 6, 2025 in Northampton, United Kingdom. More"I mean, from my whole career, until last year, the team have supported me so much and given me such amazing opportunities, and our goals have been aligned, and what has been in the best interest of the team has also been in the best interest of me. "Now, of course, these last six months has been a very unique situation where, you know, I don't have a huge power in that sort of agreement, and maybe the interests were not aligned for some time, which, of course, puts me at risk for these last six months, but then it was my job to perform and reduce that risk. "So, yeah, I don't know. To be honest, I don't wish for it to come to anything like that. I still trust Toto and I still trust in the team that they will always support me as long as I am performing. So that's what I need to focus on. "But of course, for both Kimi and I, these past months have not been the most assuring for our future, and that's just been, yeah, a bit conflicting." When asked if a multi-year contract extension was right for him, Russell stated that what matters most to him is winning. He said: "It's something we need to think about. What is in the interest of both parties, really. What do I want from this, as much as what do Mercedes want. There has been, obviously, a bit of a unique situation we found ourselves in over these last six months. The fact is, from my side, I want to win. That is the only thing I care about. "More than money, more than the number of days I do sponsorship. More than anything, I want to win, and that, for me, is the most important thing about my future." But Russell's priority after the race at the Hungaroring is to go on holiday. He added: "But you know, truth is, I've never feared losing my seat, and that's not even been on the table once this year, even though, of course, you guys like to make a big deal out of it. "Maybe 12 months ago, I was a bit more anxious and wanting to get something sorted or confirmed for '26. Maybe six months ago, I felt the same. But now, I'm performing better than ever. I still feel I've got more to give. "I've waited so long, and I think now I want to get through this weekend. I want to go on a holiday next week and enjoy the break. And there is no time pressure my side. There is no time pressure from the team's side. So whenever we come to an agreement, we'll get it done. But it's got to be right both ways."

Auburn's Alex McPherson named to Lou Groza Award watch list

Alex McPherson is receiving national attention ahead of his "comeback" season. Preseason award watch season is upon us, and one Auburn Tiger is on the radar. Alex McPherson is set to return to the field full-time after an illness sidelined him for most of the 2024 season. He has caught the attention of the Palm Beach Sports Commission as he is one of 30 kickers included on the Lou Groza Award watch list that was released Friday afternoon. McPherson was 49-of-49 on extra points and was 19-of-20 on field goals with a long of 53 yards as a freshman and sophomore during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In one game last season, he connected on all three extra point attempts while going 1-for-2 on field goals in Auburn's win at Kentucky in October. He has worked to regain strength and is poised to make a strong comeback in 2025. 'It gives me some confidence that my body can hold up, that I can trust it and not have to worry about it every step of the way like I had to last year,' McPherson said in an interview with Jeff Shearer of 'I think this is definitely one of the strongest groups in the country. We have three really strong kickers, we've got three strong punters. This group is definitely special and it's going to be something to look out for this year.' USC's Caden Chittenden, Georgia's Payton Woodring, and UAB's Jonah Delange join McPherson on the Groza watch list this season. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8.
