Pegula beats Swiatek on grass to win Bad Homburg title in Wimbledon tune-up
BAD HOMBURG, Germany — Top-seeded Jessica Pegula beat five-time major champion Iga Swiatek 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday to win the grass-court Bad Homburg Open, extending Swiatek's year-long title drought.
Pegula clinched her third title of 2025 — with the others in Austin, Texas, and Charleston, South Carolina — and it was the ninth title of the 31-year-old American's career.
Swiatek was seeded fourth at the WTA 500 tournament in Germany, where the 24-year-old Pole sought her first trophy since the 2024 French Open and a 23rd overall.
In their 11th career meeting, but first on grass, Pegula won for the fifth time overall. Pegula beat Swiatek in the quarterfinals at last year's U.S. Open, where she finished the runner-up.
Although Swiatek hit nine aces in Saturday's final, she also dropped her serve twice. Pegula saved the only break point she faced and won a higher percentage of points on first and second serve.
The former No.1-ranked Swiatek has won four French Open titles and one U.S. Open, but has never been beyond the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
Pegula has also never been past the last eight at Wimbledon, where plays starts on Monday in London.

Can Patrick Reed help 4Aces end long drought with a win in his home state of Texas?
It's been since 2023 since the 4Aces have won a LIV Golf team title, a stretch of 27 starts, but Patrick Reed insisted this week that the team hasn't gone into panic mode. But Reed has played better of late, and he came into this week's LIV Golf Dallas at Maridoe Golf Club in a good place after a top-25 finish at the U.S. Open at Oakmont. And the rest of the underperforming team, one that includes Dustin Johnson, Harold Varner III and Thomas Pieters, was also showing signs of trending upward. So Reed had no worries about the side as it came to Texas, the state in which he lives. "The team room has been fine. The golf aspect of it has just kind of been too up and down. You'll have one or two guys play really well one day and then one or two of the guys don't quite have it and then it flips the next day and things like that," Reed said on Friday. "I feel like right now the team is playing really solid. We know TP will bounce back. His game actually looks pretty solid for the most part. "The biggest thing is keep the throttle down." Reed, who shot a 67 in the opening round as did teammate Varner, did just that during Saturday's second round. He finished with 68 and the 4Aces look poised to return to the podium if they can manage their way through Sunday. The team holds a 4-stroke lead with one round to play. "It would mean a lot, obviously, to win in your home state," Reed said. "But really to me, honestly, it doesn't matter where it is. Winning a golf tournament is winning a golf tournament. The adrenaline and that feeling of standing up on stage and hoisting that trophy is an amazing feeling. It doesn't really matter where you're at or anything like that. "But doing it in my home state would be special for sure. But we've got a long way to go."
