AIIMS Raipur performs its first Swap Kidney Transplant: What is it?

India Today24-04-2025

Two men from Bilaspur, both in their early 40s and battling end-stage kidney disease, recently underwent a life-saving transplant at AIIMS Raipur, but not the usual kind.In a first-of-its-kind surgery for the state, and a milestone for the institute, the doctors performed a Swap Kidney Transplant, a complex procedure that matched each man with the other's donor wife, overcoming blood group incompatibility.advertisementWith this feat, AIIMS Raipur has become the first government hospital in Chhattisgarh and the first among the newer AIIMS institutions to successfully carry out a swap transplant - also known as Kidney Paired Donation (KPD).
The transplant was performed on March 15 and involved a team of specialist nephrologists, surgeons, anaesthesiologists and transplant coordinators. All four individuals, the two recipients and their spouses who stepped forward as donors, are recovering well in the Transplant ICU.
India's top transplant body, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), is pushing to make such transplants more accessible across states. ()
advertisementThe transplant team for the recent swap surgery included Dr Vinay Rathore (transplant physician), Dr Amit R Sharma, Dr Deepak Biswal, Dr Satyadeo Sharma (surgeons), along with Dr Subrat Singha, Dr Mayank, Dr Jitendra and Dr Sarita Ramchandani from the anaesthesia department, and transplant coordinators and nursing staff.WHAT IS A SWAP KIDNEY TRANSPLANT?A Swap Kidney Transplant is an option when a patient has a willing donor who is incompatible either due to blood group mismatch or the presence of antibodies.Instead of rejecting the possibility of a transplant, the pair is matched with another patient-donor duo in a similar situation and the donors are swapped. It ensures that both patients receive compatible kidneys.

The patients at AIIMS Raipur had been on dialysis for nearly three years. One pair had a B+ donor and an O+ recipient, while the other had the reverse — O+ donor and B+ recipient.advertisementThe swap allowed for compatible transplants, without the need for a deceased donor. This is especially significant because swap transplants can increase transplant rates in the country by up to 15%, a crucial development since India faces a shortage of organ donors.India's top transplant body, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), is pushing to make such transplants more accessible across states.AIIMS Raipur is also an emerging leader in kidney transplantation in Chhattisgarh. In the last two years, it has been the first among the newer AIIMS to perform deceased donor organ transplants, including paediatric kidney transplants - another first for the state. So far, the hospital has conducted 54 kidney transplants. In these, 95 out of every 100 cases, the new kidney that was transplanted is still working well after the surgery with a 97% patient survival rate.Six deceased donors have donated their organs in the last two years.

AIIMS, Harvard gastroenterologist ranks 6 common foods for gut health: Fermented foods score highest

Maintaining good gut health is essential for digestion, immunity, and overall well-being. What you eat plays a huge role in keeping your digestive system happy and balanced. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, recently shared an Instagram post ranking common foods that support gut health and promote optimal digestion. Let's take a look: A post shared by Saurabh Sethi (@ Leading the list, fermented foods like yoghurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut are rich in probiotics which is a beneficial bacteria that help balance your gut microbiome. These bananas are high in resistant starch, a type of prebiotic fibre that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. It promotes a healthy gut lining and can help regulate blood sugar levels. Slightly green bananas offer more gut benefits than their ripe counterparts. A great source of soluble fibre, oats help keep your digestive system running smoothly. Fibre promotes regular bowel movements and provides nourishment for healthy gut bacteria, reducing the risk of constipation and inflammation. While still beneficial, ripe bananas contain less resistant starch but provide important nutrients and some fibre. They are gentle on the stomach and can help soothe digestive issues, though they rank lower than green bananas for gut benefits. White bread is low in fibre and nutrients compared to whole grain alternatives. It offers minimal support for gut health and digestion and can sometimes contribute to blood sugar spikes, making it a less ideal choice for maintaining a healthy gut. At the bottom of the list, bacon's high saturated fat and preservative content can negatively affect the gut microbiome. Processed meats like bacon may increase inflammation and disrupt digestion, making them detrimental to gut health when consumed frequently. ‘It takes less than 2 minutes to make': Alaya F starts her day with this gut-cleansing detox water, suggests having it on an empty stomach

Alaya F is a self-proclaimed health and wellness enthusiast, and her social media is a journal of her experiments and tips. In a recent Instagram post, the Jawaani Jaaneman actor shared her go-to morning detox drink, which promises great benefits. 'What if I told you that this little morning drink helps my gut, clears my skin, boosts my metabolism, and gets rid of bloating?🤔🌸✨ (And it takes less than 2 minutes to make!!) I have this drink every single morning and I swear by it!🤍,' she said in a video. Here's how you can make it: Ingredients: warm water 2 tsp soaked chia seeds 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 2 tsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp honey 'Pour some warm water in a glass, add a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, 2 teaspoons of soaked chia seeds, and a teaspoon of honey. Stir it and enjoy,' she walked us through the recipe in the video. Mentioning three critical points to remember, Alaya added: – Have it on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning – Make sure the water is warm, not boiling – Consistency is key, have this regularly for the best results reached out to health experts to understand the benefits of starting your mornings with this concoction: Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator, tells 'Drinking honey-lemon water in the morning can support weight loss, aid digestion, and promote hydration. Replacing high-calorie drinks with honey-lemon water can reduce overall calorie intake, potentially leading to weight loss.' Increased water intake can boost metabolism and create a feeling of fullness, which helps shed pounds, she added. According to her, lemon juice encourages the production of digestive juices, and honey acts as a prebiotic, supporting beneficial gut flora. Moreover, the drink's hydrating properties can prevent constipation and promote regular bowel movements. According to Dr Bimal Chhajer, Cardiologist, former consultant at AIIMS, and founder of SAAOL Heart Institute, consumption of raw honey, instead of added sugar, can help lower fasting blood glucose and the amount of bad cholesterol present in the blood because honey is a natural substance found in nature. It is unprocessed, without any preservatives or chemicals. 'Consuming 35-45 grams of unprocessed honey in a day, be it through tea, raw, or any other way, can lead to several beneficial effects on the human body,' he added. Malhotra said chia seeds are full of fibre, which helps keep the stomach healthy. 'Eating chia seeds daily can help regulate your bowel movements if you struggle with constipation. Chia seeds provide a slow release of energy, keeping you active throughout the day,' she said, adding that they contain protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates, which help maintain energy levels. These seeds also expand in your stomach and make you feel full for a longer time, which can prevent overeating and help with weight control. According to her, it is always a good idea to kick-start your day with some apple cider vinegar. It helps balance the pH of the gut and aids in digestion. It also helps flush out toxins from the body. Adding a pinch of honey enhances the flavour and nutritional benefits of the drink.
