300 undernourished kids in Camarines Sur to benefit from GMA Kapuso Foundation's feeding program
According to "24 Oras" on Wednesday, among the beneficiaries of the feeding program are the children of Jessica Adricula and Eliza Dominguez. Their families have resorted to eating rice field rats to alleviate hunger, especially when finances are tight.
"Hinuhugan naman po naming nang maayos, talagang lutong-luto po siya bago namin kainin," said Eliza.
However, Gainza Municipal Health Officer Dr. Ivan Phillip Albay said that the Department of Health does not suggest eating rice field rats.
"Kasi most likely they are carriers of leptospirosis," he said.
"Sa age five to 10, usually rich in protein dapat kasi talagang development years nila 'yun," he added.
For Nutrition Month this July, GMA Kapuso Foundation will conduct a feeding program for three hundred children in Camarines Sur. The program will run for 120 days, providing the children with nutritious meals with help from the foundation's sponsors.
The foundation held a deworming activity for the kids ahead of the feeding program.
"Para po maalis 'yung mga parasites sa tiyan po kasi isa po 'to sa nagiging dahilan kung kaya't hindi tumataba ung bata, parang may kaagaw ba 'yung bata sa nutrisyon," said Gainza Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Carol Ivy Saballegue.
For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. Visit the GMA Kapuso Foundation website for more information.

7 leptospirosis patients die in San Lazaro Hospital
The San Lazaro Hospital in Manila has recorded seven deaths due to leptospirosis in the first five days of August. According to Maki Pulido's Tuesday report on '24 Oras,' among the fatalities is a 16-year-old teenager who died due to acute renal or kidney failure. A doctor at San Lazaro noted that all seven fatalities waded through the floods caused by the continuous downpour brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and tropical cyclones. 'Napapansin namin na ang severity ng mga sakit ngayon medyo aggressive. Sa tingin namin na within two to seven days, nagkakaroon sila ng komplikasyon sa sa kidney, liver, respiratory system, o lungs. Nakikita namin na hindi na sila nakakaihi o hirap silang huminga. Kailangan namin i-ventilator,' said Dr. David Suplico, San Lazaro Hospital medical center chief. ('We've noticed that currently, the severity of illnesses is quite aggressive. We think that within two to seven days, patients are having complications in the kidneys, liver, respiratory system, or lungs. We've observed that they can no longer urinate or are having difficulty breathing. We need to put them on a ventilator.) As of August 5, 45 leptospirosis patients are confined at the San Lazaro Hospital, of which 15 are minors. Suplico noted that each case can already be considered a complicated case, as the patients' kidneys, lungs, and liver are affected. According to San Lazaro Hospital's data, most of the leptospirosis patients are from Metro Manila, Cavite, and Laguna, with most of them being from Manila. 'Usually, nakikita namin ito sa mga pasyente na riders na lumusong sa baha na may paltos ang mga paa at sila ay mga na-confine sa aming ospital,' Suplico said. (We usually observed that patients confined in our hospital are motorcycle riders who waded through floodwaters with blisters on their feet.) Four of the confined leptospirosis patients are in the intensive care unit. This included the husband of Marlyn Benitez, who, despite wanting to get prophylaxis, cannot do so because they cannot go to the health center due to the flood. Meanwhile, the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center in Marikina City logged 44 leptospirosis cases as of August 5, most of which are from the city. The Department of Health has recorded more than 500 leptospirosis cases in July 2025. However, there is still no data on how many have contracted leptospirosis due to the successive weather disturbances. Dr. Imelda Mateo of Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center reminded the public to wear boots when braving the flood or to take prophylaxis. 'Wag pong ipagsawalanag bahala kasi makakamatay ang leptospirosis (leptospirosis can be deadly, so take it seriously),' she said. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

64 medical groups 'concerned' with Vergeire's removal from DOH
A total of 64 medical organizations have raised their concerns regarding the recent removal of Dr. Maria Rosario Clarissa Singh-Vergeire from her post as Undersecretary for the Department of Health (DOH). In a statement issued Monday, the Healthcare Professionals Alliance against Covid-19 (HPAAC) described Vergeire as a 'calm and credible presence' who helped Filipinos and healthcare workers through the Covid-19 pandemic. HPAAC noted that the removal of Vergeire and other DOH officials were 'deeply concern[ing]' and questioned the appointment of officials with 'limited public health background crucially needed in their roles.' 'These actions risk undermining institutional stability, demoralizing other health professionals, and weakening the public trust we have collectively worked to build,' read the statement. 'Political transitions must not come at the cost of technical excellence or institutional memory—especially at a time when the country continues to face urgent health challenges, including the recent calamities affecting our communities,' the statement added. HPAAC called on the Palace to uphold the President's leadership by strengthening 'the foundations of professional, non-partisan health governance.' As of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, the list of signatories were as follows: Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) Philippine League of Government and Private Midwives (PLGPM) Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) Philippine Obstetrics and Gynecology Society (POGS) Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) Philippine Academic Society of Social and Community Medicine (PASCOM) Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO) Philippine Academy of Pediatric Pulmonologists (PAPP) Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (PARM) Philippine Association of Nutrition (PAN) Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (PAPRAS) Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) Philippine College of Emergency Medicine (PCEM) Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PCEDM) Philippine College of Geriatric Medicine (PCGM) Philippine College of Occupational Medicine (PCOM) Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) Philippine Heart Association (PHA) Philippine Neurological Associatioun (PNA) Philippine Orthopedic Association (POA) Philippine Psychiatric Association (PPA) Philippine Rheumatology Association (PRA) Philippine Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (PSDBP) Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) Philippine Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (PSPGHAN) Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (PSAAI) Philippine Society of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) Philippine Society Of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (PSO-HNS) Philippines Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO) Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines (PHAPI) Alliance for Improving Health Outcomes (AIHO) ANG NARS Asia Pacific Center for Evidence Based Health Care (APCEBH) Asia-Oceania Research Organization on Gynecologic Infections and Neoplasia (AOGIN) Child Neurology Society (CNS) Health Care Professionals for Christ (HCPC) Kalusugan ng Mag-Ina (KMI) Pain Society of the Philippines Pediatric Nephrology Society of the Philippines (PNSP) Philippine Ambulatory Pediatrics Association (PAPA) Philippine Association of Medical Journal Editors (PAMJE) Philippine College of Adult Nephrology (PCAN) Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Physicians Association Philippine League Against Epilepsy Philippine Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society (PLAS) Philippine Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy (PSGE) Philippine Society for Gynecologic Pathology and Colposcopy (PSCPC) Philippine Society for Reproductive Medicine (PSRM) Philippine Society for the Study of Overweight and Obesity (PSSOO) Philippine Society for Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (PSURPS) Philippine Society of Cardiovascular Catherization and Interventions (PSCCI) Philippine Society of Climacteric Medicine (PSCM) Philippine Society of Critical Care Medicine (PSCCM) Philippine Society of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology (PSECP) Philippine Society of Hypertension (PSH) Philippine Society of Newborn Medicine (PSNBM) Philippine Society of Pediatric Hematology (PSPH) Philippine Society of Public Health Physicians (PSPHP) Philippine Society of Reproductive Immunologists (PSRI) Philippine Spine Society (PSS) Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of the Philippines (SGOP) Singh-Vergeire was among three DOH officials who left their posts late July.
