Visit this island to dodge Thailand's 'The White Lotus' boom

Spend a day at sea
Just as Koh Samui is surrounded by the Ang Thong National Marine Park, Malolo Island also has extraordinary ocean adventures accessible by boat. While the characters of The White Lotus simply cruise around on Gary's yacht in episode four, you won't regret packing a snorkel to see the magnificent coral reefs. For a more hands-on experience in marine restoration, join the Coral Gardeners, an organization that tends to coral nurseries and transplants coral to damaged reefs to help restore the delicate ecosystem.
Visitors staying on Malolo Island can arrange a day trip to other islands in the Mamanuca archipelago, like South Sea Island, where active vacationers can go kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming.

Set-jetters shouldn't miss the nearby Monuriki Island where the movie Cast Away, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year—was filmed. Sidney James Cox, a private tour guide with ToursByLocals recommends heading to the iconic island for a hike. 'Many people love to take a day trip to Monuriki Island, known as 'Castaway Island.' There are short hikes to amazing viewpoints here, and you can see many pristine beaches.' Malolo Island and the surrounding area are ideal for watersports. 'Paddleboarding, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and sailing are all fun ways to get out in the ocean,' explains Cox. Adventurous wave riders can take a 30-minute boat ride to the famous, but challenging Cloudbreak surf spot, known for its world-class lef-hand wave that breaks over a shallow reef.
Embrace local Fijian traditions and culture
Visitors to Malolo Island can immerse themselves in Fijian culture and learn about traditions such as meke performances, a traditional Fijian dance combined with song and storytelling to share the island's history, culture, and values. It's not uncommon for local resorts to host or feature these traditional performances on-site. Visitors to the island should also witness firsthand a lovo—a customary feast cooked in an underground oven. This Fijian feast usually consists of a slow-cooked chicken with sweet cassava as well as other meats and root vegetables marinated in flavorful local herbs and coconut milk.
While on Malolo Island, visitors can't leave without trying kava. Fiji's national drink is made from dried yaqona root, a pepper plant. An acquired taste, the calming, intoxicating beverage hits the palate with bitter, earthy overtones, but the social aspects of the kava ceremony are what you will truly remember. Commonly practiced in Pacific Islands, the traditional ritual involves drinking the mildly sedative drink served from a communal bowl (tanoa) into coconut shells (bilo) to participants sitting in a circle. Kava gives the taster a numbing sensation in their mouth, followed by a mellow, relaxed feeling, amplified by the charm of being welcomed into a circle of strangers.
Ravitu compares the importance of culture in Koh Samui and Malolo, saying, 'Both islands have a strong cultural identity, with Malolo embracing Fijian traditions that you can experience firsthand when visiting the neighboring village. This hospitality is driven by the upbringing of the Fijians where their traditional community mindset and welcoming ways are extended to tourists visiting the islands. Visitors often experience these cultural practices firsthand, such as the kava ceremony. This traditional ritual not only allows guests to connect with locals but also fosters a sense of belonging and shared experience.'

Gwyneth Paltrow's ‘immersive retreat' blasted online: ‘Quite unimpressive'

Gwyneth Patlrow's 'holistic, immersive retreat' in the Meatpacking District has some visitors stressed out. The Hollywood star's free 'seasonal installation' at Genesis House, which also houses a Korean restaurant, is called 'The Forest Within' and is supposed to be 'a restorative and multi-sensory wellness experience.' 3 Gwyneth Paltrow's immersive installation at Genesis House first opened last month. Neil Rasmus / Shutterstock But some of the Goop queen's fans said they waited too long for a lackluster experience that was far too short. The experience 'guides guests through an immersive journey centered around Korean heritage, nature, and design,' according to a news release. 'Drawing inspiration from the cultural significance of nature, Paltrow's fantasy transforms Genesis House into a meditative forest that is rich with natural elements and layered with symbolic representations of Korean wildlife — most notably the Tiger, long regarded as a guardian spirit in Korea.' But the 'experience' 'took 5 minutes to walk through,' said one person who griped that there was 'no place to sit and admire the mediocre projections. 3 The installation runs through June 29. Neil Rasmus/Shutterstock 3 'Umimpressive' was just one of the words visitors used to describe Paltrow's work. Genesis Motor America 'Not something to go out of your way for,' the online critic added. 'Beautiful but literally 2 minutes long,' another commented. Others bemoaned the excessive wait times for what was an all too brief experience. 'This was quite unimpressive after a 40-minute wait,' one person wrote online. Reps for Paltrow did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The installation is open until June 29.

Coco Gauff gets French Open moment with Spike Lee hug after giving him ‘something to cheer for' after Knicks loss

No Knicks in the NBA Finals meant Spike Lee flew to Paris for a different American sports victory. The Academy Award-winning American filmmaker was in attendance for Coco Gauff's first Roland Garros title on Saturday morning, witnessing the 21-year-old take down world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4. Dressed in all white with a Yankees hat and sunglasses, Lee, with the occasional seat twitching during the competitive, two-hour and 38-minute match, stood up and cheered on Gauff to her second Grand Slam win. Gauff, 21, eventually fell to the ground as tears rolled down her face in victory, and before going up to her family and coaches' box to greet them, she stopped to see Lee. The young American greeted Lee, giving him a hug and several high-fives before Gauff moved along with the French Open festivities. 5 Spike Lee and Coco Gauff during the Roland Garros 2025 tournament on June 7, 2025 in Paris, France. WireImage Gauff, despite being a Georgia native, understood how much the Knicks-Pacers series meant to Lee. During the post-match press conference, she said she planned on saying something if she ended up winning the match. 'And when I saw him on the court, I was like 'If I win this match, the first person I'm gonna dab up is Spike Lee,' she said. 'So, once I won the match, I went to the ground and everything, I went straight to Spike Lee. I wanted to tell him, 'I had to do it. You know, even if the Knicks didn't win, I'm glad I gave him something to cheer for.' So, yeah, that was pretty cool. I haven't seen the video yet, but I'm excited to see it.' 5 Coco Gauff of United States greets Spike Lee after her victory over Aryna Sabalenka during the Women's Singles Final match. Zabulon Laurent/ABACA/Shutterstock Although Lee is a frequent visitor to the U.S. Open — the last major of the season held in Flushing, Queens — Gauff admitted that the brief interaction was her first official meeting with him. 'That was the first time I really met him up close,' she said. 'I've seen him at my matches at the U.S. Open, and when I saw him on the court today, I saw him when I was warming up. They panned the camera to him in the gym when I was warming up and I was like, 'Oh my gosh, Spike Lee is here.' And then I kinda felt bad because I usually put my towel in that spot, which is why I feel like he sat there. But because you know the lower-ranked player gets the other box, I put my towel in the other box.' With the victory, Gauff became the first American woman in a decade to win the French Open, since Serena Williams did so in 2015. She is also the youngest American to win the women's singles title since 2002, when Williams — at 20 years old — won the first of her three career titles in Paris.
