Received an e-PAN email? Govt warns it's a scam. Here's how to report it

A seemingly official email offering you an 'instant' e-PAN card could cost you far more than your Permanent Account Number. The Press Information Bureau's fact-check unit has warned taxpayers that such emails are fake and part of a phishing scam aimed at stealing financial and personal data.
What's the scam?
Scammers are sending emails that mimic government communication, urging recipients to download their e-PAN card via a link. Clicking the link or sharing requested information could expose sensitive details, such as PAN, Aadhaar, bank account numbers, or passwords, to cybercriminals.
Such scams exploit the fact that PAN is a key identity document for income tax filing, high-value transactions, and KYC (know your customer) compliance. Once in the wrong hands, your PAN can be misused to open bank accounts, apply for loans, or launder money.
How to identify the fraud?
The Income Tax Department never asks for sensitive details over email, SMS, or calls. Common red flags include:
· Generic greetings ('Dear User') instead of your name
· Urgent or threatening tone to force quick action
· Suspicious links not ending with '.gov.in'
· Spelling errors or poor formatting in the email body
If the email claims to be from the Income Tax Department but asks you to download a file or click a link outside its official website, it's a red flag.
How to stay safe?
· Ignore and delete any unsolicited e-PAN email
· Do not click on suspicious links or attachments
· Check the sender's domain, official communication comes from '@incometax.gov.in' or related verified government domains
· Access PAN services directly from the official portals only.
How to report?
The Income Tax Department advises reporting phishing attempts immediately:
1. Forward the email to webmanager@incometax.gov.in
2. Include the email header for better tracking
3. You can also report to incident@cert-in.org.in for cybercrime intervention
An e-PAN is free and instantly available via the government's website, you do not need to respond to random emails. In the age of rising digital fraud, it's safer to type official URLs yourself than to trust a link in your inbox.

HHRC takes suo motu cognisance of employee declared 'dead' in Aadhaar records

Chandigarh, The Haryana Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a news report alleging that a Public Health Department employee was denied salary as his Aadhaar record wrongly showed him as "deceased." HHRC takes suo motu cognisance of employee declared 'dead' in Aadhaar records The report published in a leading daily on August 12 said Vijay Kumar, a resident of Valmiki Basti, Ramlila Parao in Rohtak, is alive and continues to perform his duties regularly. He has been reportedly deprived of his lawful remuneration due to the administrative lapse, it said. Upon review, the commission observed that the health department failed to update the employee's record on the Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Limited portal, despite being aware that the "deceased" status in Aadhaar was erroneous. The full bench of the commission, comprising Chairperson Justice Lalit Batra and Members Kuldip Jain and Deep Bhatia, in its order dated August 14, noted that such treatment appears contrary to Article 7 of the United Nations International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights , which recognises the right to just and favourable conditions of work, including remuneration ensuring a decent living for workers and their families. The commission further noted that non-payment of wages for work performed constitutes a violation of the employee's human rights, particularly the right to livelihood and dignity as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India and reaffirmed in international human rights instruments. The department's inaction amounts to an arbitrary deprivation of earnings, impairing the complainant's ability to support himself and his family. Reflecting on the situation, the commission recalled a sentiment from Shakespeare's famous play Julius Caesar. "The Commission is reminded of the well-known sentiment from Shakespeare's play namely Julius Caesar, wherein it is suggested that the dead may, at times, wield greater influence than the living. The present matter, however, reflects a grim inversion of that idea - a person who is unquestionably alive and faithfully performing his duties has, for official purposes, been treated as deceased. This erroneous classification has not only deprived him of his lawful remuneration but has also inflicted indigity and avoidable hardship," the commission observed. To disregard the service of a living employee in such a manner is an administrative failing that the Commission cannot overlook, reads the order. As per the order, the commission finds prima facie evidence of administrative negligence and violation of the complainant's rights. "The department's own records declare the complainant 'deceased', yet his daily presence at the workplace and faithful discharge of duties bear living testimony to the contrary. This striking contradiction of acknowledging his work but denying him his wages underscores the urgency of immediate action to restore his salary, correct all records and ensure that no employee is ever again placed in such an anomalous and unjust position," the order states. The commission has called for a report on the necessary corrections to the Aadhaar record of the complainant from the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Rohtak, and the Commissioner and Secretary, Citizen Resources Information Department , Government of Haryana, before the next hearing. The HHRC has directed the engineer-in-chief, Public Health Engineering Department, Haryana, Panchkula; the Superintending Engineer, Public Health Engineering Department, Circle Rohtak; and Sandeep Kumar, Executive Engineer, Public Health Engineering Department, Rohtak, to submit a detailed report within four weeks. The officials have been asked to cover: Steps taken to correct the complainant's status in all official records, including Aadhaar; measures to ensure immediate disbursement of all pending salary dues; and departmental accountability for the delay and the hardships caused. The matter has been listed for hearing on September 23. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Tirupati bogus voting case regains momentum after a long pause

Tirupati: The ghost of bogus voting that haunted the 2021 Tirupati Lok Sabha by-election has returned to the political spotlight, with investigators resuming a probe that had gone cold for months. A special team, recently deputed by the Election Commission (EC), has stepped into the temple town to piece together evidence of large-scale electoral fraud that once stirred a storm in Andhra Pradesh politics. The renewed scrutiny follows a review meeting chaired by District Collector Dr S Venkateswar, where officials took stock of the pending cases before submitting a status report to the EC. A senior officer from Anantapur has been entrusted with leading the fact-finding exercise, which includes examining voter application forms, approval records, and the roles of booth-level officers (BLOs), revenue staff, election DTs, ERVOs, and RDOs. Questioning of these personnel is slated for the coming days. The case itself traces back to April 2021 by-poll, when allegations surfaced that thousands of fake votes had been inserted into the rolls. Back then, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Chandramouliswara Reddy and several revenue officials were suspended for allegedly enabling the enrolment of bogus voters in favour of the then ruling party. The EC, calling the offence 'extremely serious,' directed that all those involved, directly or indirectly, be nailed down. One glaring incident from that election continues to symbolise the controversy. On polling day, April 17, 2021, a 21-year-old youth was caught at Scavengers Colony Municipal High School attempting to cast a vote with someone else's EPIC card and voter slip. Although opposition workers handed him over to the police, the case was booked only under bailable sections of the IPC (171F and 188), sparking criticism that the offence was deliberately downplayed. Investigators later noted that crucial lapses followed – polling staff and eyewitnesses were never questioned, and forged voter and Aadhaar cards were not seized. The controversy also spilled over into the police force. Last year, the EC cracked the whip on officers accused of soft-pedalling the investigation, despite evidence suggesting that nearly 34,000 fake EPIC cards had been printed and used. Thirteen criminal cases were initially registered after opposition complaints, but most were closed for 'lack of evidence,' raising eyebrows across political circles. With the new team revisiting old files and testimonies, officials say the spotlight will now be on how the earlier probe was compromised and whether accountability can finally be fixed. The EC has sought a conclusive report in the coming weeks, a move that could once again heat up the State's political landscape.
