Liverpool manager Arne Slot responds after Crystal Palace fans disrupt tribute for Diogo Jota at Wembley
The brothers died on 3 July in a car accident in Zamora, Spain after a suspected tyre blowout. The tragedy occurred only 11 days after Jota, a 28-year-old father of three, had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso.
While the majority of Palace fans stood and respectfully observed the silence, a small group could be heard chanting 'Eagles'. Other Palace supporters urged them to be quiet and Liverpool fans at the other end of the stadium booed, before the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of the tribute.
But Slot suggested the Palace fans involved may not have been aware that the silence was taking place.
"I don't think this was planned,' Slot said. 'Maybe the fan was not aware of the minute's silence and was happy and tried to cheer for his team, then the Palace fans tried to calm him down and our fans reacted. I don't think they had a bad intention.
'I'm a positive person. I look at the respect paid to Diogo and Andre across the world.'
Liverpool continued their preparations for the new campaign while mourning the death of their Portuguese forward. Their first game of the summer was an emotional win over Preston North End where fans chanted Jota's name throughout. There was also a moving performance of You'll Never Walk Alone by Claudia Rose Maguire, wife of former Preston player Sean Maguire, before kick-off.
At Wembley, Liverpool fans waved a banner displaying Jota holding the Premier League trophy with his shirt number, 20, which has since been retired by the club.
Ahead of the Community Shield, Slot had told the FA website: 'This summer has been a difficult for everybody connected with the club,' said Slot. 'The passing of Diogo Jota had a big impact on all of us and is something that we are still coming to terms with. We cannot imagine the pain that Diogo's family, his wife, children and friends are going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward.
'Diogo's passing has had a big impact on us all, but what has been so important has been the love and care shown from the football world, and in particular of course the Liverpool FC community.
'I also want to mention the strength and the courage of my players here. They have found themselves in one of the toughest positions imaginable, but the way they have come together and the way they have conducted themselves, on and off the pitch, is a credit to them and to this football club. We really couldn't have asked more of the boys, and I am extremely proud of them all.
'We will always carry Diogo with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.'

Paul Merson fears that one piece of Liverpool's summer transfer business could leave them with a 'major problem' this season. Arne Slot's side stormed to the Premier League title last season, but have not rested on their laurels and instead launched an ambitious spending spree this summer. 'It was a bit of a worrying performance from Salah at Wembley,' Merson told Sky Sports. 'I don't think I've seen a player play that badly before in a football match. 'But that can be Salah. He can go missing for a few weeks before going on a run of scoring in 10 matches on the trot or smashing in a hat-trick. 'One thing that might be difficult for him this season is playing in front of Jeremie Frimpong. Compared to Trent Alexander-Arnold, he's more like an attacking winger.' Merson continued: 'With Trent, Salah could make any run and he'd be picked out. Trent would also attract defenders, leaving Salah more space. Trent could destroy you himself. 'Frimpong's a good player but he's not a destroyer. He plays so far forward that he's not a natural defender. Trent wasn't either but the same thing applies really, I think Ibrahima Konate could be too exposed. 'There's a major problem down that side of the pitch, even more so than last season.' Speaking after Liverpool's defeat to Crystal Palace, though, Slot was keen not to draw sweeping conclusions from his side's display. 'I don't feel we conceded that much today but again we conceded two goals because the first big chance they got resulted in the penalty. Maybe I forget a few chances but it felt to me that in the 78th minute, that was their second big chance of the game. 'But in general there were not many chances because they went to a low block [and] we had a lot of ball possession. 'But after the 2-2 they had [chances], so it needs maybe a little bit of adjustment defensively at the moment because we don't concede a lot of chances but we do concede goals at the moment.' Such is Arteta's focus on the defensive side of the game that it looks like Arsenal are best-placed to keep the most clean sheets in the league once again. Of their main competitors, Liverpool tend to prioritise goalscoring over clean sheets and have a more all-action defence (especially with the additions of flying full-backs Frimpong and Kerkez) while City may need to strengthen in this area ahead of the new season if they're to keep anywhere as many clean sheets as the Gunners. Don't rule out another surprise keeper in there – like Sels was last year – though it looks like Raya is well-placed to make it three golden gloves in a row in 2025/26. PRE-SEASON as a Sunday league footballer is relatively simple. Three friendly games are followed by some players attending one 'fitness' session, which involves a few stretches, a lap of the pitch and a crossbar challenge before going to the local pub for a few pints. 3 3 3 As a professional for EFL side Cambridge United in League Two, however, things couldn't be more different. Intense workouts, demanding technical training sessions, and a constant tracking of your diet, sleep, water intake, and ability to recover mean that these players will be in tip-top condition when the season kicks off. With Brooks as the club's new front-of-shirt sponsor, Cambridge United players are taking their fitness more seriously than ever. I had the opportunity to head to the club's training ground and experience what it's like to do pre-season as a professional. Funnily enough, our session still began with a jog around the pitch and some stretching, but beyond that the session couldn't have been more different from what I am used to. Complex fitness drills were explained to me like the rules of a board game translated from Japanese to English by someone who'd only ever read the instructions upside down. I tried to navigate my way up and down the pitch in various forms with my heart beating out of my chest and my blood pressure at levels it hasn't been in years. After about 30 minutes of fitness training at this level, I was kneeling on the floor, gasping for water and feeling faint. That was before watching the team train with a ball, a showcase of the elite technical skill required to make it pro. Every session is monitored by every player's personal WHOOP band, a fitness tracker that explains to the coaches at the club how much sleep the players are getting, how hard they're working themselves, and how well recovered they are.
