HMCS Margaret Brooke returns from historic Operation PROJECTION

His Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Margaret Brooke has successfully completed Operation (Op) PROJECTION, marking the end of a historic deployment to the South American, Antarctic, and Caribbean regions. This mission, which began on January 10, 2025, was the first visit to Antarctica by a Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) vessel, supporting the first all-Canadian scientific research expedition to the region.
During the deployment, HMCS Margaret Brooke built and enhanced international relationships, in cooperation with Global Affairs Canada, through multiple port visits and engagements with regional partners throughout South America and the Caribbean. In Antarctica, the ship supported Canadian scientists in conducting vital research, showcasing Canada's commitment to understanding this unique polar environment.
The crew of HMCS Margaret Brooke demonstrated exceptional professionalism and dedication throughout Op PROJECTION. Their efforts have strengthened Canada's forward presence and diplomacy in the Central and South Americas, contributing to international peace and security. It is a measure of the man that in a world where values, virtue, and self-sacrifice seem anachronistic, Marc Garneau embodied them. Article content Following his death on Wednesday at age 76 after a brief illness, there was lavish praise and kind words for Garneau whose life was devoted to serving his country. Article content Article content As an astronaut, Garneau reached the stars, as a politician he served honourably and faithfully, despite his tawdry treatment at the hands of Justin Trudeau. Article content In a statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney said, 'To those who worked alongside him, Marc was a trusted colleague and friend. To Canadians, he was a symbol of national pride and possibility.' Article content Article content Mary Simon, the Governor General, said he left behind a legacy of integrity and professionalism. Article content Erin O'Toole, the former Conservative leader who also served as a captain in the air force, said of Garneau, who had been a commander and captain in the navy, that he represented the very best of Canada and had inspired countless people 'including me.' Article content Garneau began his service to Canada by serving in the navy before joining the Canadian Astronaut Program. In 1984, he made history when he became the first Canadian in space as a payload specialist on the Space Shuttle Challenger. He went on to make two other space missions aboard the Endeavour. Article content He was president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2005 and in 2008 was elected as a Liberal MP for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount (formerly Westmount–Ville-Marie). Article content Article content In 2013, he ran for the Liberal leadership against Trudeau, and in a debate that year, pointedly asked the future prime minister, 'So please tell us what in your resume qualifies you to be the leader of the country.' 'But on balance, I think he didn't because he appointed me transport minister when we were finally elected.' Marc Garneau, 1st Canadian astronaut in space, dead at 76
Former astronaut and cabinet minister Marc Garneau has died. He was 76. A statement from his wife, Pam Garneau, says he passed away peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by his family. Marc faced his final days with the same strength, clarity and grace that defined his life, the statement says. She says the family is grateful for the outpouring of support, concern and kind words received over the past few days and also asks for privacy as we grieve this profound loss and take time to reflect and heal. Garneau was born on Feb. 23, 1949, in Quebec City. He studied engineering physics at the Royal Military College of Kingston, graduating in 1970, and he earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London in 1973. He then began his career by enlisting in the Canadian Navy, where he served from 1974 to 1983. After that, Garneau became the first Canadian to travel to space as part of a NASA mission in 1984. After holding various positions at the Canadian Space Agency, he became its first vice-president, then its president, from late 2001 until 2005. Marc was my role model, mentor, 30-plus-year close friend and an exemplary Canadian for us all, said former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield in a statement. My heart goes out to his family. The world lost a very good man. In 2008, Garneau was elected as a Liberal in what was then the Quebec riding of Westmount–Ville-Marie. In 2013, ridings were redrawn, and he was elected to represent Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount. He served as minister of transport in Justin Trudeau's government from 2015 to 2021, and then as minister of foreign affairs from January to October 2021. Garneau resigned from the House of Commons in March 2023. On X Wednesday, Trudeau says he was in school in the early 1980s when he first met Garneau. I was in awe of his service and courage then, and continued to be so when I had the privilege of serving alongside him in Parliament and in government, says Trudeau. Throughout his life, Marc truly embodied and radiated the greatness of Canada. Garneau was well known in the community Westmount Mayor Christina Smith remembers volunteering on Garneau's campaigns before he took office, and served on his riding association. He was so incredibly generous with his time with people, and especially kids, said Smith, recalling him visiting a robotics summer camp or reading Hadfield's book to children last summer. Everywhere he went, kids wanted to talk to him, she said. And not only was Garneau working to keep local organizations funded and attending events, he was also a Westmounter whom people would see walking down Sherbooke Street, stopping by the pharmacy or grocery shopping, she said.
