After backlash, Mahasabha rolls back jayanti order
BENGALURU: Following an uproar from Lingayats, the Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha has withdrawn its controversial directive calling for Basava Jayanti and Renuka Jayanti to be celebrated jointly, breaking decades of tradition.
After the order, signed by former DGP and current state president of the mahasabha Shankar Bidari, sparked outrage, Lingayats leaders and devotees approached minister Eshwar Khandre and mahasabha chairman MLA Dr Shamanur Shivashankarappa. The subsequent pressure finally forced the mahasabha's hand to back down.
Mahasabha secretary Renuka Prasanna said, 'We have withdrawn the April 2 circular. We will go with the traditional celebration of Basava Jayanti. There will be no changes.'
The April 2 directive had drawn criticism, with community leaders warning that combining the two celebrations would not only disrespect cultural traditions but also deeply fracture community unity.
Faced with mounting backlash from Lingayat mathadheeshwaras, Basava organizations, Jagathika Lingayats and mahasabha district units, Shivashankarappa was left with little choice. Talks were held behind the scenes, culminating in the withdrawal of the order.

Protests erupt over ‘derogatory remarks' against Amaravati women
Massive protests broke out on Monday across Andhra Pradesh following controversial remarks allegedly made against women from the Amaravati capital region during a live debate on a Telugu TV channel, recently. The remarks, aired during a panel discussion involving a journalist, V.V.R. Krishnam Raju, and moderated by journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, have sparked outrage from political leaders, women's groups, and the public. The police arrested Mr. Srinivasa Rao on Monday in Hyderabad. Protest rally In Ponnur, a protest rally was organised under the leadership of local MLA Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Narendra condemned the remarks and criticised the TV channel management, for allowing such statements to be aired. 'Even after being reduced to just 11 seats in the recent elections, YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has not shed his arrogance,' Mr. Narendra said. He claimed that the TV broadcast was an intentional attempt to insult women who did not support the YSRCP in the elections. 'Forgetful of the fact that women are present in every household, including their own, they chose to demean women through such irresponsible commentary,' he added. The legislator also pointed to an earlier incident involving a political activist Kiran Kumar, who reportedly made remarks on social media and was later allegedly assaulted while in police custody by a former YSRCP MP. He demanded immediate action and accountability in the present case as well. Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Kanumuru Raghurama Krishna Raju condemned the role of the panellists, asserting that journalists should uphold ethical standards. 'The ones expected to guide others on media ethics have themselves failed,' he said. 'Krishnam Raju spoke recklessly, while Kommineni laughed along — an equally serious offence. I have written to the DGP seeking immediate action,' he added. In Guntur's Arundelpet, the Telugu Mahila activists staged a protest outside the TV channel office, setting ablaze copies of the newspaper also owned by the management. Women protesters voiced anger over what they termed recurring attempts to defame the women of the Amaravati region. 'They called Amaravati a graveyard earlier, and now they stoop further. If such comments continue, the public will not remain silent,' a protester warned. Protesters demanded an unconditional apology from the TV channel and its leadership. 'If the organisation fails to apologise, women will respond appropriately,' they asserted.

Years after outrage over delayed FIR in Ankita Bhandari murder, Uttarakhand's revenue police issue back in court
A civil contempt petition has been filed in the Uttarakhand High Court, saying that a 2024 order of the court, giving the state government one year to replace revenue police with regular police in the hilly regions, has not been complied with. The court has asked the state to give instructions on compliance. Filed by Haldwani-based Amit Kholiya and represented by advocate Dushyant Mainali, the petition argues that the state government has not been able to set up regular civil police stations in rural parts of the state, replacing revenue police within the time given to them by the High Court in its judgment of May 21, 2024. An earlier PIL had sought directions to implement a 2018 order of the High Court, which also dealt with the establishment of regular civil police stations in all the rural areas of Uttarakhand and to abolish revenue police within six months of the order. The court order came in the backdrop of a woman's alleged killing by her in-laws for dowry in 2011 in a village in the Tehri Garhwal district, which comes under the revenue police system. In 2024, when the PIL was filed, the state sought another year for the same, which the court granted. Mainali argued that the state has failed to carry out the orders despite the completion of a year, prompting a civil contempt petition against the Home Secretary, DGP, and IGs of Kumaon and Garhwal divisions. The revenue police system is more than a century old in many parts of the state. Under the system, civil officials of the revenue department have the powers and functions of the regular police. Whenever a crime takes place, the revenue police of the area files an FIR, investigates the case, arrests the accused and also files a chargesheet in the local court. The issue gained attention in September 2022 after a delay in the registration of an FIR by the revenue police in the Ankita Bhandari murder case. The night the 19-year-old, working in a resort owned by a former BJP leader's son, was killed, the accused informed the local patwari (as the area falls under revenue police jurisdiction) about her disappearance, but no case was registered. The patwari did not inform anyone about the case and went on leave, and after the matter came to light, the case was transferred to the regular police four days after the incident. He was suspended and later arrested by the Special Investigation Team. The incident raised concerns about the revenue police system in the state, and Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri had written to the Chief Minister, seeking the replacement of the revenue police with regular police. In October 2022, less than a month after Bhandari's murder, the state government took a Cabinet decision to abolish the revenue police system and replace it with regular civil police. The current petition also claims that the petitioner on May 26 sent a representation reminding the respondents about their assurance to comply with the court order and served them a copy of the judgment, 'but no heed has been paid to the same and the directions issued by this Hon'ble Court is not being complied with', the petition said.
