Gukesh, Pragg, Vaishali, Kuneru among 15 Indians qualified for FIDE Grand Swiss 2025
New Delhi: Reigning world champion D Gukesh, R Praggnanandha, Vaishali R and Kuneru Humpy are among the 15 Indian players (11 men and four women) qualified for the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss and Women's Grand Swiss, which will take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from September 3–16.
As one of the most significant events in the chess calendar, the FIDE Grand Swiss offers players a direct pathway to the Candidates Tournament. The top two finishers in the Grand Swiss will secure spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament while the top two players in the Women's Grand Swiss will qualify for the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament.
In addition to its importance as a qualifier, the event will feature an increased prize fund. The Open prize fund has been boosted from USD 4,60,000 to USD 6,25,000 - a 36 per cent increase. The women's prize fund sees an even larger jump, from USD 1,40,000 to USD 2,30,000, up by 64 per cent.
Both tournaments will follow an 11-round Swiss format, with 170 players participating from across the globe: 114 in the Grand Swiss and 56 in the Women's Grand Swiss.
So far, 100 players have qualified for the 2025 Grand Swiss by rating, while the Women's Grand Swiss has 44 qualifiers. Only players who played at least 30 rated games are eligible.
Six new spots have been added to the women's lineup this year. Of the six new spots, four players will qualify based on the June 2025 FIDE Standard Rating List while two wild cards will be awarded by the organisers.
The final lists of participants will be confirmed after Continental spots, players nominated by the FIDE president and players nominated by the organiser are announced.

"Assuming you are a South African cricketer like Heinrich Klaasen or a West Indian cricketer like Nicholas Pooran, your earning potential to play for the country is so limited that it is not going to suffice. It's easier to pursue if you are with a rich board, but if you are with some other board that doesn't have money, it's easier to say no," Chopra said. From the board's point of view, some of them have their hands tied. They don't have money. So where will they give from? In some cases, like the West Indies, there used to be a tussle. There is a different ego battle going on there. So one gets upset very quickly. If you are not accommodating, then I am going," Chopra said. Pooran and Klaasen will continue to play franchise cricket, being important parts of their respective teams across leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL), SA20, ILT20 and Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Both earn in excess of Rs 20 crores (USD 2.3 million) from just their IPL contracts.

The global watchdog of doping in sports said Wednesday it will urge public authorities to shut down the drug-fueled Enhanced Games planned in Las Vegas next year. 'We will urge the U.S. authorities to find legal ways to block this initiative,' World Anti-Doping Agency president Witold Banka said on the sidelines of a meeting of Olympic sports bodies. Organisers of the games scheduled next May promise USD 1 million bonuses to beat world record times by athletes who will be encouraged to use performance-enhancing drugs under medical supervision. 'This initiative seeks to normalise the use of potentially dangerous drugs,' Banka told leaders of Summer Olympic sports at the annual meeting of their umbrella group, known as ASOIF. 'For the sake of athlete health and the purity of sport of course it must be stopped,' the WADA leader said. Banka, a former sports minister in Poland, suggested the Enhanced Games could be legally exposed in the state of Nevada or federally. Investors in the project, which aims to sell personalised supplements and substances plans to subscribers, include one group backed by Donald Trump Jr. The doping-backed project was 'very embarrassing' for the U.S., Banka suggested, given its proximity to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 'I think the main responsibility is on USADA's shoulders, who need to take the lead because it is in their country,' he said.
