On Country vs Franchise Debate After Nicholas Pooran's Retirement, Ex-India Star's Stunning 'Biscuit Packet' Logic

In recent days, two of modern-day cricket's best wicket-keeper batters - Nicholas Pooran and Heinrich Klaasen - have announced their retirement from all forms of international cricket. The fact that both are relatively young - Pooran is 29 and Klaasen is 33 - have raised questions regarding their early retirements from national duties. The debate between international cricket and franchise cricket has been stirred once again, with many players earning significantly higher playing for T20 franchises around the world. Former India cricketer and reputed pundit Aakash Chopra gave his reasoning on the matter. "The cricketers' point of view is very simple - 'I have a very limited time span, my shelf life is very short.' When you buy a biscuit or a milk packet, 'best before' is written on it. The 'best before' comes with every player," Chopra said, speaking on his YouTube channel. "Then you realize that if you don't achieve your full potential in a particular time frame, when the sun sets on your career, you will be alone with your family. So he is not okay with where he is right now, and if he becomes a T20 freelancer for the next four or five years and earns a lot of money by playing across the world, he can almost guarantee his happy retirement," Chopra explained. Chopra stated that the decision to retire from international cricket is easier for players who play for cricket boards that do not give a big contract. "Assuming you are a South African cricketer like Heinrich Klaasen or a West Indian cricketer like Nicholas Pooran, your earning potential to play for the country is so limited that it is not going to suffice. It's easier to pursue if you are with a rich board, but if you are with some other board that doesn't have money, it's easier to say no," Chopra said. From the board's point of view, some of them have their hands tied. They don't have money. So where will they give from? In some cases, like the West Indies, there used to be a tussle. There is a different ego battle going on there. So one gets upset very quickly. If you are not accommodating, then I am going," Chopra said. Pooran and Klaasen will continue to play franchise cricket, being important parts of their respective teams across leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL), SA20, ILT20 and Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Both earn in excess of Rs 20 crores (USD 2.3 million) from just their IPL contracts.

WADA urges US authorities to shut down planned drug-fueled event Enhanced Games in LA

The global watchdog of doping in sports said Wednesday it will urge public authorities to shut down the drug-fueled Enhanced Games planned in Las Vegas next year. 'We will urge the U.S. authorities to find legal ways to block this initiative,' World Anti-Doping Agency president Witold Banka said on the sidelines of a meeting of Olympic sports bodies. Organisers of the games scheduled next May promise USD 1 million bonuses to beat world record times by athletes who will be encouraged to use performance-enhancing drugs under medical supervision. 'This initiative seeks to normalise the use of potentially dangerous drugs,' Banka told leaders of Summer Olympic sports at the annual meeting of their umbrella group, known as ASOIF. 'For the sake of athlete health and the purity of sport of course it must be stopped,' the WADA leader said. Banka, a former sports minister in Poland, suggested the Enhanced Games could be legally exposed in the state of Nevada or federally. 'I cannot imagine, for instance, doctors giving the drugs to the athletes. It is completely against the values of their work. The main thing is this event is going to be located in the U.S., so I think there is a strong role to be played by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency,' said Banka, whose Montreal-based organisation has long had a troubled relationship with the American agency. USADA's chief executive, Travis Tygart, has described the Enhanced Games as a 'dangerous clown show that puts profit over principle.' Investors in the project, which aims to sell personalised supplements and substances plans to subscribers, include one group backed by Donald Trump Jr. The doping-backed project was 'very embarrassing' for the U.S., Banka suggested, given its proximity to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 'I think the main responsibility is on USADA's shoulders, who need to take the lead because it is in their country,' he said. Swimming's governing body, World Aquatics, said last week it will ban athletes, coaches and officials who take part in the Enhanced Games.

'No System, Strategy, Or Clarity': Bhaichung Bhutia Slams AIFF, Kalyan Chaubey

Last Updated: Bhutia gave a scathing remark on AIFF reportedly offering $ 50,000 bonus to Team India players had they won their AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier against Hong Kong. Indian football legend Baichung Bhutia gave a scathing remark on the All India Football Federation reportedly offering $ 50,000 bonus to Team India players had they won their AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier against Hong Kong. India required a win in the crucial encounter following a draw against neighbours Bangladesh earlier in the qualifiers, but the Blue Tigers went down 0-1 to HK on Tuesday in another disappointing result, on the back of a 0-2 defeat to Thailand in the preceding friendly. Bhutia slammed such incentives and called on chief Kalyan Chaubey to step down from the helm of the AIFF. 'We've seen reports that players haven't even received their daily allowance of RS 2,500. Indian footballers don't have central contracts like cricketers. They don't earn in lakhs or crores. Their compensation largely comes through daily allowances," Bhutia explained. 'Then suddenly, out of nowhere, there's a USD 50,000 prize announcement if they had won the game. Where did this come from?" 'If they had won, would the same bonus be offered for the next four games? There's clearly no system, no strategy. Just random decisions with no clarity," he said. India enjoyed a successful spell in the year 2023 climbing to FIFA Ranking 99 at one point, however, the Blue Tigers had to endure a turbulent 2024 campaign, which they ended winless. Bhutia lambasted Chaubey's work at the helm since taking over as the head of the national federation. 'It's been a terrible two and a half to three years under Kalyan Chaubey's leadership," the former Indian striker said. 'On-field performances have been poor, and off-field management has been chaotic, riddled with controversies," the Sikkimese sniper continued. 'It's time for him to step down—for the sake of Indian football," the 48-year-old added. (With Inputs From IANS) First Published: June 11, 2025, 15:20 IST
