Hong Kong woman loses HK$180,000 in K-pop star G-Dragon concert ticket scam

Scammers have conned a woman out of HK$180,000 (US$23,000) over tickets for Korean singer G-Dragon's coming sell-out concerts in Hong Kong, one of nearly 30 victims cheated out of more than HK$610,000 for the three shows.
Hong Kong police on Monday urged the public to exercise caution when buying tickets to events after receiving more than 200 reports of related swindles since mid-July, accounting for 40 per cent of all online shopping scam cases.
Almost 30 cases involved G-Dragon concert tickets, with victims losing more than HK$610,000.
The 36-year-old South Korean rapper and singer-songwriter, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, is set to hold three concerts at AsiaWorld-Arena from Friday to Sunday, with tickets priced between HK$799 and HK$2,399. All three shows, part of the K-pop star's world tour, are sold out.
In one case, a woman bought two tickets on Facebook for a G-Dragon show for HK$8,800, significantly more expensive than the original price of HK$2,399 for one.
After transferring the money, the seller repeatedly demanded 'deposits' to secure the tickets. The victim ended up paying HK$180,000 in three separate transfers before the seller cut off all contact.

Immigration officers in Indonesia's Bali helped Russians run tourist extortion ring: police

Two immigration officers in Indonesia 's holiday hotspot Bali may lose their jobs after being arrested for allegedly colluding with Russian nationals in a cross-border extortion ring that targeted foreign tourists through threats, assault and forced payments. The officers – identified as Ernest Esmail and Yopita Barinda Putri, both 24 – are accused of working with two Russian men to intimidate and extort travellers at dozens of locations across the island between January and July this year. They were arrested in late July alongside the Russians – Iurii Vithcenko, 30, and Ilia Shkutov, 32 – following an investigation triggered by the violent assault of a Lithuanian tourist in Jimbaran on July 10. According to Parlindungan, head of the Bali Immigration Regional Office, internal disciplinary procedures are already under way and the pair are likely to be terminated pending the outcome of the legal process. 'Following a detailed review by the police chief, there will definitely be an ethics hearing, and the sanctions will be very serious. Dismissal? That is certainly a possibility,' Parlindungan said in response to a reporter's question on Friday, as quoted by local news outlet Kompas. Bali police present the suspects involved in an extortion and assault ring targeting foreign tourists during a press conference on Friday. Photo: Bali Police The investigation, led by the Bali Regional Police, has so far uncovered 27 separate incidents of alleged extortion and assault targeting foreign nationals across Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar. Police allege the group kidnapped victims and physically abused them, using threats of imprisonment or deportation to force compliance.

Man in Japan stabs woman randomly in convenience store

A 25-year-old unemployed man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after stabbing a woman in a random attack at a convenience store in Osaka prefecture, the latest in a string of unsettling knife assaults that have rocked Japan The incident took place at around 7.40pm on Sunday at a 7-Eleven in a residential district of Suita city, just north of central Osaka. Police said the suspect entered the store and immediately attacked a 28-year-old female customer who was standing in line at the register, stabbing her in the back with a kitchen knife. The woman, an office worker and a resident, sustained injuries to five areas of her back, according to police reports. Witnesses and store employees subdued the attacker until officers arrived.
