Takeaways from Cowboys' final week of OTAs: Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs absences, notable plays, injury updates

New York Times6 days ago

FRISCO, Texas — Micah Parsons was absent from the Dallas Cowboys' organized team activities Tuesday, continuing a pattern of non-attendance over the previous two weeks as he pursues a new contract.
Is that disappointing?
'No, that's part of the business,' Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. 'All teams go through it. … He's staying connected. He's having great communication with Coach (Brian Schottenheimer) and his staff, so we feel really good about that.'
Jones declined to provide updates on contract negotiations, saying: 'No different than anything else. I'll let you know when it happens.'
Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones on if there are any more moves to be made to improve the roster: 'We don't have anything that's on the front burner.'
So nothing to the Jalen Ramsey rumors?

I will be there! I haven't missed a mini camp in 4 years! Even though the contract is not done, I have teammates and a playbook ! I'm preparing as if I will be on the field the first week of camp! But it's in the owner's hands. I'm ready to win a Super Bowl ! https://t.co/gMsfQEDYo7

Despite missing practice, Parsons arrived at The Star facility shortly after Tuesday's session concluded but did not speak with reporters. The Cowboys have maintained excellent OTA attendance overall, with only Parsons and cornerback Trevon Diggs absent from the voluntary portion of the offseason program.

As the players and coaches moved from the outdoor fields into the Ford Center, Stephen Jones spoke with reporters for seven minutes. One of the topics he discussed was the health of the cornerbacks, as Diggs and second-round pick Shavon Revel Jr. are working their way back from significant knee injuries.
'Between guys like Diggs and Revel, in particular, guys that can make a huge difference for us, we'll know a lot more when we get to camp,' Jones said. 'But we do like what (Andrew) Booth was doing, really like what (Kaiir) Elam's doing. (Caelen) Carson is really starting to get his legs again. And, of course, (DaRon) Bland is Bland. He's one of the best in the business. It's great to have him out there. We'll see kind of how things evolve.'
Diggs is rehabbing from a season-ending knee injury in Miami. Schottenheimer provided no timeline for his return but confirmed Diggs returned to the facility two weeks prior for medical evaluation, with 'all signs positive.'
Jones said they prefer to have Diggs do his work at The Star but understand he can choose to rehab elsewhere because this portion is voluntary. Diggs and Parsons are expected to attend next week's mandatory minicamp.
'Our understanding is that he's getting the work done,' Jones said. 'He'll be back in, and we'll get a good look at him next week.'
The Cowboys are completing their final week of OTAs before mandatory minicamp begins Tuesday, with media access scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Training camp will commence in late July.
Here are some takeaways from Tuesday's practice.

• Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb attended but did not practice.
• George Pickens and Jalen Tolbert emerged as the top two receivers in Lamb's absence, and they each hauled in touchdown grabs from Dak Prescott during team drills.
• Backup quarterback Joe Milton showed off his impressive arm talent during team drills, effortlessly throwing a beautiful deep ball up the right sideline that wide receiver Jalen Brooks caught for about a 45-yard gain.

• Defensive end Sam Williams took a notable step Tuesday, participating in individual drills after being limited to rehab work off to the side. Williams wore a noticeable brace over his surgically repaired left knee. Signs seem to be pointing to his being ready to go for the start of training camp.
• Elam did a good job of breaking up a deep-ball throw from Prescott to Pickens in team drills.
• Linebacker Damone Clark intercepted a Milton pass across the middle of the field in team drills.
During Schottenheimer's pre-practice news conference, he touched on some big-picture topics, including the franchise's nearly 30-year Super Bowl drought. 'I don't get caught up in the drought,' he stated. 'This is one year. This is the first year of mine as head coach.'
Schottenheimer emphasized his forward-looking approach: 'When the season's over, we move on. 2024 is over; now it's 2025. Are we gonna win the Super Bowl this year? I hope. I think we are. If we don't, you move on.'
The coach rejected the notion that the franchise's historical success creates undue pressure on the current team, stating: 'I think it's to be celebrated. … We want to win a Super Bowl. We don't hide from that.'
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer: 'The way we practice and the way I act at practice, my father is looking down from heaven going: 'What are you doing? That's not how you practice.' But my father also coached a long time ago. And the type of athletes and type of young men that… pic.twitter.com/HswOQltLVJ

Patriots' Christian Barmore Is Out To Prove He's Still Himself In 2025

New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore has returned in full after being limited to ... More four games due to blood clots in 2024. (Photo by Jessica Rinaldi/The Boston Globe via Getty Images) Christian Barmore intends on keeping last year behind him. After missing all but four games in 2024 due to complications stemming from blood clots, the New England Patriots defensive tackle has been medically cleared for a full return in 2025. And since players reported back to Gillette Stadium for the offseason workout program, he's been among them from April into June. That's the plan moving forward. 'That stuff I went through, man, I would never, ever want anybody to go through that," Barmore told reporters following Monday's session of mandatory minicamp. "That stuff, imagine someone stopping you from breathing, literally like stopping you. Now, I can breathe again. Now, them lungs open up, so it's like what's up. I'm good, man. Good to go. Green light.' The 25-year-old Barmore had been placed on the non-football illness list as active rosters around the NFL reduced to 53 last August. He was moved back to the list in December after experiencing recurring symptoms. In between the shutdowns arrived 123 defensive snaps. Those snaps brought one sack and six total tackles. 'There's really just a lot of fire in my heart," Barmore said. "I can say that because I feel like after that situation, people forgot who I am. So I'm just really bringing a lot of competitive with me. Every day when I'm on this field, it's just to prove that I'm still me and I'm always going to be me.' Last spring, Barmore signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension with New England. It carried a maximum value of $92 million as well as $41.8 million in guarantees. The agreement came on the heels of a 2023 campaign that spanned 64 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and a team-high 8.5 sacks for Barmore. Pro Football Focus charted his degree of disruption for 49 combined quarterback pressures. He also had a hand in six pass breakups and one forced fumble while appearing in every game. 'I feel really confident in myself because, one, I'm breathing, talking," the 6-foot-5, 315-pound Barmore said as sights turn toward training camp. "I'm just having fun, talking stuff, talking smack. Just having a good time with my teammates and playing hard.' Since landing in Foxborough at pick No. 38 overall in the 2021 NFL draft, the former University of Alabama national champion's run has included 48 games, 139 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks and 11 starts. And now, a restart. 'Well, I'm not going to comment on Christian's medical status. I'll leave that up to him, but what I've seen is a player that is excited and that is coachable,' Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said during his Monday press conference. 'Extremely coachable. He has some versatility. He's rushed inside. He's lined up outside. He's worked extremely hard. You've seen him chase and play with great effort down the field. I'm excited to see where he's at, but I've seen a lot of just improvement and a lot of engagement from him since the time that we've been here.'

ESPN announce Lee Corso's final College GameDay will be Texas at Ohio State in Week 1

ESPN announce Lee Corso's final College GameDay will be Texas at Ohio State in Week 1 Lee Corso's final ESPN College GameDay will feature the Texas Longhorns. ESPN has announced the 2025 debut of the popular college football pregame show will be in Columbus, OH on Aug. 30 for the Longhorns visit to the Horseshoe to take on Ohio State. The show will also be Corso's last chance to make a headgear pick. ESPN revealed earlier this year Corso would be retiring after Week 1 of the 2025 season. ESPN will use the episode to honor Corso's 38 college football seasons on the air. "Special programming honoring and celebrating Corso's career will be present throughout the Week 1 show in addition to the GameDay crew previewing the 2025 season and all the action of the kickoff Saturday slate," ESPN disclosed. "The season-opening episode will be located in its traditional spot on Ohio State's campus before finishing the show inside 'The Shoe' where Corso will make his final headgear pick in front of 100,000 fans ahead of the Buckeyes' noon kick." Ironically, Corso's first headgear pick was also in Columbus back in 1996. 'My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and College GameDay for nearly 40 years,' Corso, who will turn 90 in August, said in a statement. 'I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement.' 'ESPN has been exceptionally generous to me, especially these past few years," Corso added. "They accommodated me and supported me, as did my colleagues in the early days of College GameDay. Special thanks to Kirk Herbstreit for his friendship and encouragement. And lest I forget, the fans…truly a blessing to share this with them. ESPN gave me this wonderful opportunity and provided me the support to ensure success. I am genuinely grateful.' College GameDay will go live at 8 a.m. CT on ESPN on Aug. 30. The first two hours of the show will be broadcast from outside St. John Arena while the crew will move inside Ohio Stadium for the final hour of the show. FOX's Big Noon Kickoff pregame show will also be in Columbus for Ohio State vs. Texas as FOX will broadcast the game on its national network at noon.

Myles Garrett anticipates Aaron Rodgers' arrival to his infamous 'graveyard'

Myles Garrett is a man of tradition. When his penchant for destroying quarterbacks and love of celebrating Halloween intersect, it's lovely. Garrett's Ohio home has long been the staging ground to an elaborate seasonal display. Headstones dot a front-yard-turned-cemetery. On them lie the names of some of the quarterbacks Garrett has sacked in his NFL career. Joe Burrow is there. Lamar Jackson, too. Ben Roethlisberger has effectively established a residency among the grass (though admittedly the immobile, massive Home Depot skeleton would have been a better place for him). Kyler Murray made an appearance, which bummed him out. Advertisement Now he's got a new name in mind to add to his collection. Four-time NFL MVP and brand new Pittsburgh Steeler Aaron Rodgers. Fortunately for Garrett, Rodgers is easier to sack than ever. The 41-year-old is still recovering from the torn Achilles that ended his 2023 season after four plays. His 6.4 yards per scramble in 2024 were significantly below the NFL average for starting quarterbacks (7.9). His 94 rushing yards were the lowest of his career as a full-time starter. Garrett didn't need the help -- after all, he's already got the ultra-mobile Murray and Jackson amidst his collection of corpses -- but Rodgers does present an opportunity. The All-Pro edge rusher has only played Rodgers' teams twice in an eight-year career. Rodgers missed both due to injury as a Green Bay Packer in 2017 and as a New York Jet in 2023. Advertisement Thus, Garrett will get the chance to add Rodgers to a list of multiple-time MVPs in Jackson and Tom Brady amidst his boneyard. "Put him in the graveyard" isn't the threat it seems like given the context. But knowing how little the Steelers and Browns care for each other, it's the right sentiment for this rivalry.
