Thailand ends search at collapsed skyscraper

The accident killed 96 people, with 7 bodies still missing. (AFP pic) BANGKOK : Thailand has declared an end to the search operation at the site of a partially constructed Bangkok skyscraper that collapsed during the March 28 earthquake and killed scores of construction workers, the city's governor said on Tuesday.
The 30-storey state audit office tower was the only building in the Thai capital that collapsed from the tremors caused by a 7.7 magnitude quake that struck central Myanmar about 1,020 km away.
An investigation is underway into why the building came down so easily while those in the rest of the city stood firm.
Earthquakes and tremors of that scale are extremely rare in Thailand and the quake sparked panic in the city, which ground to a halt for most of the day.
Authorities have recovered 89 bodies from the rubble and seven are still missing from one of the deadliest accidents of its kind in Thailand, which killed 96 people. In Myanmar, more than 3,700 people died.
The six-week operation in Bangkok involved hundreds of personnel, including international rescue teams in an around-the-clock effort during which search dogs and heavy equipment were deployed. The mission was severely hampered by the scale and weight of the debris.
'I want to thank all those who helped,' Bangkok's governor Chadchart Sittupunt told reporters. 'This was a life changing incident for many and a lesson.'
Authorities have so far been identified 86 of the dead, while forensic tests are being conducted on 100 out of 313 fragments of human remains recovered from the site, according to police.
The probe is focusing on those involved in the construction of the building, which started in 2020.
A Thai anti-corruption watchdog said it had flagged to authorities irregularities found in the construction of the skyscraper before it collapsed, while industry officials said initial tests of materials at the site indicated the presence of substandard steel.

Pamela Ling disappearance: Home minister says police recorded statements from 48 witnesses, including four MACC officers

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The police have called 48 witnesses, including four officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), to record statements to assist in the investigation of the kidnapping case of Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said close cooperation was also carried out with enforcement agencies, including the MACC, to ensure a thorough investigation. "Cooperation was made with related agencies, including the Immigration Department, for example, the vehicle said to be used (to kidnap Pamela) was found in the northern border of Bukit Kayu Hitam-Thailand. "This is only believed, not confirmed," he said while wrapping up the 13th Malaysia Plan motion for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. He also said the police investigate every report of kidnapping or missing persons according to the standard operating procedures (SOP) set and based on the rule of law. Saifuddin Nasution said according to police data and records, in every 10 missing person cases, nine were successfully found, including those alive and those who had died. "Specifically, this missing person incident, in terms of data, does not give an alarming picture of the level (of public safety), but we cannot take a denial syndrome attitude because if it involves lives, it is important from the police perspective, and we use all our strength to overcome it," he said. Commenting on the issue of national border security, he said the authorities detected 71 illegal routes for smuggling activities along the Sarawak, Malaysia border with Kalimantan, Indonesia, including hot spots in Ba'kelalan, Lubuk Antu, and Tebedu. The government, he said, had approved an allocation of RM28 million to the Ministry of Home Affairs to develop seven additional security control posts, including Pos Raso 1 in Lundu, Pos Sapit in Padawan, and Pos Tepoi in Serian. "The government also approved an additional allocation of RM64.318 million under the special Sarawak border development allocation, which will be utilised by the General Operations Force (PGA) Brigade Sarawak for the implementation of 22 projects involving 14 non-physical projects and eight physical projects," he said. Saifuddin Nasution said, in addition, to strengthen border control in Sarawak, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) established another PGA Brigade Sarawak battalion, namely Battalion 23 in Seri Aman, as an addition to the existing three battalions, involving an increase of 320 personnel consisting of senior police officers, junior officers, and civil servants.

Cops investigating possibility of mastermind behind ‘Geng Budak Sekolah'

Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail yesterday said that the authorities had busted a group of four 12-year-olds selling pictures of themselves on WhatsApp. PUTRAJAYA : Police are investigating the possibility of a mastermind behind the sexual crimes by a criminal group known as 'Geng Budak Sekolah (School Kids Gang)'. Berita Harian reported home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail as saying that the investigation needed careful handling as it involved the thoughts and decisions of a child. 'This case is complicated because it involves children willing to leave school after seeing these activities as a source of income. 'At this time, we have not been able to confirm the existence of a mastermind,' he said after his ministry's monthly assembly today. Yesterday in the Dewan Rakyat, Saifuddin said the authorities had busted a group of four 12-year-olds selling pictures of themselves on WhatsApp. Saifuddin said some of the girls decided to drop out of school as they were making more money than their parents from the sale of their pictures. He said the four girls had a WhatsApp group with many members, '762 to be specific'. The investigation is being carried out by the sexual, women and child investigations division. Saifuddin said the case also used the same modus operandi as the swinger case previously uncovered by the police, and that both cases involved long intelligence processes.
