Why I'll Never Travel Without These FitFlop Shoes Again
The FitFlop F-Mode Flow sneaker blew me away with its plush cushion, bouncy feel, arch support—and ... More ability to wear well with seemingly everything I tried on.
I went looking for a new shoe to wear after I was invited to attend Spielwarenmesse, the largest international toy trade show that's held annually in Nuremberg, Germany. I knew I would be on my feet for 8 to 10 hours each day of the trade show, and that I'd also want to be comfortable navigating from the airport to the city's underground train to the convention center where the show is held. And while sneakers seem to be more than accepted on trade show floors these days, I was headed to Europe, where the 'business casual' look is typically a little more buttoned up than many Americans' typical Monday fit—and certainly more tailored and polished than my typical WFH outfit that I optimize for comfort.
Amazon
I didn't want to wear the comfy but bright and more chunky-looking Hoka on this international trip, or my comfy but less supportive slip-on Rothy's. My Birdies Starling flats would have looked lovely, but they rubbed a blister into my heel during my last trade show, and my Allbirds Tree Breezers are great for a quick outing but not hours of walking. Even my more neutral New Balance Fresh Foam 1080s didn't quite feel elevated enough.
These supportive FitFlop shoes paired well with jeans and trousers.
I came upon the FitFlop, a new-to-me UK-born brand, in one of our Forbes Vetted travel gift guides. I ordered it in two sizes a week before the show in one of those desperate last-minute packing frenzies and immediately had my Cinderella moment of realizing this shoe was clearly made just for me. The rearfoot cushion was bouncy and plush without looking too loud or too ugly. The midfoot snugged right up to my high arch without feeling restrictive and the toe box was roomy and comfortable. I wore them with dark wash jeans, light wash jeans, a pair of cuffed black Sanctuary trousers and a pair of Spanx ponte pants—and they went well with everything. This meant I left for Europe with a single pair of shoes packed in my carry-on, something that is unheard of for a chronic over-packer who likes her options.
Of course, it wasn't designed just for me—and there's an entire FitFlop site of shoes, including flats, boots, sneakers in women's and men's and kids sizes and styles—all with the brand's amazing Microwobbleboard footbed technology. Dozens of FitFlop shoes also carry the APMA Seal of Acceptance, meaning they have been independently verified for good foot health by podiatrists, including the particular shoe I wore.
FitFlop describes the Microwobbleboard as a triple density foam added to the shoes so that they 'contour to your feet, absorb impact and can help to reduce muscle exertion.' Each of its shoes, whether a flat or a boot or a walking shoe offers some type of cushion designed for that particular shoe and aimed at providing a more comfortable and supportive walking experience. Many of its flats offer Dynamicush instead of the Microwobbleboard with hidden arch support and 'high-rebound cushioning under contoured footbeds' to deliver a more 'pillowy' walk.
Nordstrom
I wanted to know more about the brand's footbed tech, so I asked them directly. Founded in 2007 by entrepreneur Marcia Kilgore, the brand really credits its ergonomic approach to footwear design led by Dr. Kim Lilley as the reason for the instant feeling of comfort I felt upon slipping on my first pair. There are four more types of FitFlop footbed tech or cushion in its shoes, including iQushion (in its slides), Neodynamic with a carbon plate in its running shoes and Anatomicush in some of its trainers.
After several months of wear, the shoes remain bouncy and supportive with only a bit of dirt ... More collected.
A brand spokesperson tells me that the triple-density Microwobbleboard in the F-Mode Flow sneaker I wore includes firm cushioning at the heel to reduce the impact of your foot striking the ground; soft cushioning in the middle to 'diffuse pressure' and a medium density at your toes to encourage that forward motion as you walk. 'The benefit of these three cushion placements is that they work to absorb impact and cushion whilst promoting natural movement for the wearer,' they say over email.
And each of its shoes works to minimize impact on the wearer by syncing to our natural movements, FitFlop adds. 'Because each step is a coordinated movement of joints, we analyze the entire body from the foot up, evaluating how our shoes impact three key areas: body alignment, muscle activity and pressure diffusion.'
Clearly, I'm sold. I returned home after my whirlwind trip with barely a low-back ache despite logging more than 15,000 steps most days. I worn them again to traverse the New York City Toy Fair at the Javits Center—and again left without a blister or any heel or back pain. I've tried to preserve my new FitFlops for future trips into New York for press events, upcoming trade shows like ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas this May and other times when I need a more elevated business casual look. But I've been wearing them on daily walks to school with the kids and around the block with my dog. They remain bouncy and flexible with just a single loose thread and a bit of dirt building up on the white of the shoe.

'Helps the shampoo spread more evenly and efficiently. Very easy to use. Very happy with this purchase.' Another person said, 'Very effective! I haven't used wet yet, but have used dry, and it works great! I have a smooth miniature dachshund, and this has removed more dead hair than the bristle brush I had been using. It is larger than expected and fits very comfortably on the hand. You basically pet your dog's coat and it gets down to the skin without using any pressure or pulling.' 'When I use this while bathing my dog, it gets a lot of shedding out!' someone else added. 'I got it because I wanted something more gentle for my dog in the bath than his scrub brush. He's old and deserves the best. I also like how this lightweight brush fits on my hand; it's better than holding a heavy scrub brush. Also, I like it because it's more sanitary, it's solid silicone, no nooks and crannies down at the base of the bristles. It's something you can completely clean and sanitize.' A luxe loungewear set you'll want to wear for your next BFF probably just to go get the mail in because it's just *that* good. The black trim and asymmetrical hem are the drama you've been missing in your closet! A set of tortoiseshell wineglasses so gorgeous, they'll make you want to invite people over to your humble abode just to show them off — and that's saying A LOT. These stemless glasses are handblown and made of 100% recycled glass, too! My advice? Grab the decanter too to complete the set. Laneige Lip Glowy Balm — a lightweight, moisturizing, and hydrating lip balm that smells like heaven and does the work of an angel. This fantastic blend of ingredients *isn't* sticky like many other gloss/balm combos, and each shade leaves a different, subtle tint! A container of Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cinnadust simply because it's the best cereal ever, and who wouldn't love the taste of it on everything!? Use it on your coffee to start your day in a sweet way, ice cream for literally the best sundae ever, french fries to turn a simple side into "a lil treat", and SO much more. A stunning pleated skirt that has truly unmatched versatility. Wearing this to work, to a wedding, to brunch, or just on an errand with a pair of sneaks will work 10 out of 10 times. Maybe just get a few different colors while you're at it? A pair of LED stained glass bulbs to fill a room with colorful and inviting lighting. The round bulb protrudes a soft medley of color, while the diamond-shaped bulb showcases direct lines of colorful light. Both are beautiful, so be prepared for tons of "Where did you get that!?" questions either way! A zigzag martini glass set because it looks like something you may have scored at a flea market, but surprise — Amazon for the win. This beautiful glassware set of four happens to be dishwasher-safe, too. Vintage could never! A versatile floral mesh top with a mock neck and long sleeves! Wear this beauty under your favorite dress or on top of a basic spaghetti strap tank, and you'll be bound to have heads turning and people asking, "Where did you get that top!?" Many reviewers even compare it to a much pricier brand that shall not be named 👀. A large, versatile scarf sure to be the most used item in your closet. You can wear it as a hair accessory, a top, a belt, or necktie. To quote Cady Heron: "The limit does not exist!" An eight-piece set of measuring cups with wood handles to add a rustic flair to your utensil drawer. The gold finish on these cups is waaay better than those plastic ones you've got sitting in your drawer, don't you think? A rattan plant stand so your plant collection isn't full of the same ole boring pots. Give your green babes some extra height to catch those sun rays, or use it to simply spruce up your living room area. This stand would look adorable just about anywhere and may encourage a new plant purchase, too! OR a hanging disco ball planter to keep the plant party going, even if there's no more floor space. When the bright sun hits this planter, it'll give light to every other plant in the room. A sophisticated pleated statement lamp with a drool-worthy wiggly base that'll have the compliments coming in at quick speed. IMO, this is the definition of a hidden gem! A grassland knitted jumper that'll have everyone ~m~ooing and aahing when they see it! This cutie has the perfect oversized look for anyone who wants to stay cozy. A set of velvet colorblock pillow covers for those in need of some extra color in your home. Your couch, bed, and accent chairs will never be the same without 'em! A breezy top-and-shorts set if you're just as obsessed with rickrack trim as Bella was obsessed with Edward (IYKYK). It even features pockets! A sleek and slender olive oil dispenser set because it won't take up as much space as those big, bulky bottles oil usually comes in. These hidden gems also come with 37 (!!) labels for things like avocado oil, balsamic vinegar, French vanilla syrup, and much more — because, yes, the dispensers work perfectly for those items, too! A stylish midi tank dress perfect for those with a minimalist closet (or anyone who needs a few more good staple dresses). The material is stretchy, comfortable, and surprisingly thick, according to reviewers! A stunning Bloomhouse dinnerware set that's microwave- and dishwasher-safe. The set — which features deep pasta bowls, dinner plates, and more — comes in moody earth tones that'll immediately level up both your kitchen and your dinner table. A unique glass vase to hold your flowers in something adorably quirky and unusual in the best way. This vase is wide from top to bottom, so your biggest, most beautiful bouquets won't have a problem fitting inside. An affordable, Lululemon-esque longline sports bra featuring built-in padding, meaning you don't need to wear a bra. I repeat, NO BRA NEEDED! If you're like me and throw your bra across the room like a shotput Olympic champion when you get home... just get this top now. Oh and you can hike, work out, and do yoga comfortably in it too, but you know, minor detail in comparison. A trivet tree — a genius 3-in-1 home essential set that works as hot dish trivets, beverage coasters, *and* cute decor. Leave this in the center of your dining table so you can easily place your hot-out-the-oven casserole on top... and pass one to the family member who's about to place their hot tea mug on your antique table. 😩 A small pup-shaped hair clip that is secure and holds hair in a cute and comfortable fashion. Reviewers with short or fine hair say it's a must for dog lovers, and for those with thicker hair — try the half up/half down look! A set of unscented twisted candles that come in just about every color of the rainbow (and then some). Your dinner table and/or mantel will officially be complete! A *leak-proof* Simple Modern tumbler — yes, the insulated tumbler you keep seeing all over TikTok for not spilling. Reviewers say the hype is real *and* well-deserved. It includes a straw and a lid, has a convenient handle, comes in tons of great colors, AND is almost half the price of the also viral Stanley Cup. Do you need this? I think yes. A pair of puffy kitten heels you can confidently step out in, knowing you'll be dressed to the nines with unique accessories to match. Honestly, these mules are an Amazon hidden gem, so you might just be starting a new trend. It's the perfect size to keep in your purse for touch-ups throughout the day and for saving space in your makeup bag. A strapless mesh bustier because the corset trend will never go out of style, and this one — with a zipper! — is one of the cutest, most affordable, and easiest to get into. This top comes in 12 (!!) cute and bold colors; you may want a different one for every day of the week. A pair of retro-style oval sunglasses with stunning gold detail that makes 'em look pretty dang similar to those $400 Miu Miu shades you've been seeing your favorite celebs rocking lately. This timeless shape oozes "extravagance and wealth, dawling" and they have UV 400 protection on top of it all!? They're clearly a wardrobe essential at this point. Sounds like heaven! A flirty corset lace-up sundress giving major Bridgerton vibes if you ask me... minus the custom-made price. In this era, you don't need to be royalty to have a stunning, great-quality dress! It's lightweight and flowy, and — wait for it — it looks extremely similar to the House of CB version that costs over $200 👀. A pair of hypoallergenic hoop earrings sure to be in heavy rotation because they go with *everything*. These chunky but lightweight beauties have an open back and a gorgeous gold, silver, or rose gold finish, too. They've got over 27,000 5-⭐️ reviews, so are obsessed. A pack of Gameboy wall decals as easy as peel, stick, and stare in awe. It'll make a fridge or a bedroom doorway more fun as it doubles as dry-erase boards, too. If that won't motivate you to write down your grocery list, I don't know what will. A rose and heart ice mold that'll make any beverage a floral dream almost too pretty to sip. Using the built-in funnels on the lid, simply pour your liquid of choice into the mold to get six lovely ice cubes hours later. Use it for everything from cocktails to iced coffee and more! Cute handmade macrame hanging baskets, because they can be used for mail, fruit, or even as a small planter (which gives this major bonus points IMO). And with multiple tiers, why not do all three? A Bluetooth typewriter keyboard with a slot for your iPad or tablet! Reviewers also use it for their laptops and entire WFH stations too, and just use the slot as a phone holder. If there was anything that'd motivate you after hours in front of a screen, it'd be this! Waiting for your new stuff to be delivered like: Reviews have been edited for length and/or clarity.

4 tips to avoid bad Amazon fashion
Ever ordered something on Amazon that didn't live up to the photos? Yahoo Shopping Editor Julia Webb shares four tips you probably haven't heard — like avoiding dresses with too many color options and checking the fabric content before you buy. Video Transcript Ok, here's a dress I ordered on Amazon, and here's what actually showed up. Pretty different, right? Now look at this one. I like it so much better. Both dresses had great reviews and similar prices. So why did one kind of suck? Hi, I'm Julia Webb, and I'm a shopping editor at Yahoo, and I write about everything you can buy online. So here are 4 tips to make sure that what you buy actually lives up to the reviews. One, check the fabric. The first dress is 99% polyester. The second is 55% linen. Stick with natural fabrics. They look and feel way better than synthetics. Two, zoom in on the review photos. Red flag number one, Photos of the first dress in lighter colors showed it was see-through and stayed super wrinkled. Lighter shades usually reveal more flaws in pictures, and even though I bought the navy version, it had the same issues IRL. Red flag number two, people added a belt. That usually means the fit is going to be off. Three, be wary of listings with 30+ color options. If it looks like they just photoshopped one dress 30 times, they probably did. Four, do not ignore this warning. Frequently returned item. That was listed on the first dress and I still bought it. Big mistake. These tips help, but nothing beats seeing something in person and trying it on. So my number one rule, always check the return policy.
