As Son of a Super Bowl Champ, Alex Freeman Standing Out For U.S. Men's Team
When Alex Freeman walked onto the field for his U.S. men's national team debut against Turkiye on June 7, his father admitted to having tears in his eyes.
"It just gives me chills," former All-Pro wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Antonio Freeman said. "He has on a USA jersey. He's representing his country. That's probably the top level of recognition you could possibly get."
With Sergiño Dest still regaining fitness after a torn ACL, the 20-year-old started at right back Sunday in the Americans' opening win over Trinidad and Tobago at the Concacaf Gold Cup. He is among the young players hoping to impress coach Mauricio Pochettino as he considers next year's World Cup roster.
Freeman's ascent has been unexpected. He played just 11 minutes of first-team league soccer before this season.
"Alex, to be honest, I had no idea who you were before you got called up," American midfielder Luca de la Torre said Tuesday, turning toward Freeman and smiling during a news conference.
Now 53, Antonio played nine seasons in the NFL, making the All-Pro team in 1998 and winning the 1997 Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers.
"Growing up I always got asked if football was the path, but when I was younger I always had a secret love for soccer," Alex said.

He also played basketball as a kid. Alex's mom rejects the notion she directed him away from American football.
"The real story is Alex didn't want to play football and he didn't want to tell his dad that," Rochelle Hinkle said. "They all use me as an excuse. He just wanted to make his own lane and his own path. He didn't have, I guess, the words to say it then."
Alex played for youth teams at Weston FC, near his home in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Plantation. He wanted to play for Inter Miami's youth academy but was turned down. Freeman was then recruited for Orlando City's academy by Javier Carrillo, his former Weston coach.
"Without him taking me in, maybe I might not be where I am today," Alex said. "Obviously moving at the age of 15 was something that was hard for me, being away from my family and everything, but I feel like it made me grow up fast and I feel that that's something that I needed to do."
He moved to Orlando in 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic.
"I still have PTSD from that 'cause I wasn't done raising him," his mother said.
Freeman debuted for Orlando City B in the third-tier MLS Next Pro on March 26, 2022, and played his first match for the senior team in Major League Soccer on April 29, 2023, entering in second-half stoppage time. He had two more substitute MLS appearances last year, totaling 10 minutes, then took over as starting right back this season from Dagur Dan Thórhallsson.
"Alex is player with little experience, but in soccer the desire, the capacity and the talent usually rise above experience," Pochettino said. "The reports we got on him were really good."
Freeman is competing for likely two right back roster spots with Dest, Joe Scally, Nathan Harriel, Bryan Reynolds, Shaq Moore and Marlon Fossey. Pochettino envisions narrowing his focus from a current group of 60 players when he makes roster selections for autumn friendlies.
"These camps, these games, I feel like it's just motivation for me to earn Pochettino's trust," Freeman said.
Alex credits his dad for teaching him training, eating and lifestyle habits. Years ago, they used to kick around a ball together. Not anymore.
"At that point I realized: You're going to hurt yourself out here," Antonio said. "We might shoot around some basketballs in the backyard, shoot some three-pointers or something, but nothing soccer related."

ESPN analyst calls 49ers offensive stud a 'Dark Horse NFL MVP' candidate
ESPN analyst calls 49ers offensive stud a 'Dark Horse NFL MVP' candidate San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has had a remarkable NFL career since the team took him with the final pick (No. 262 overall) in the 2022 NFL draft. After starting his time with San Francisco as their third-string quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, Purdy eventually benefitted from injuries to the other two and took over as the starter late in his rookie season. Since then, he's led the team to a 23-13 record, two NFC championship appearances and a Super Bowl appearance while completing 67.5% of his passes for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He's also added 480 yards and eight more scores with his legs. His performance over his first three years in the league earned him a massive five-year, $265 million contract this offseason, before he entered the final season of his rookie deal. While San Francisco could've franchise-tagged him for 2026, this extension makes both sides happy and sets the team up with a long-term plan. Now, ESPN's Chris Broussard is picking the 25-year-old quarterback as a dark-horse candidate for the 2025 NFL MVP Award. "Brock Purdy. He wants to live up to his money. He's a good, upstanding guy," Broussard said on "First Things First" on FOX Sports 1 recently. "I think Purdy, he has the easiest schedule in the league. He has his horses back, like C-Mac (Christian McCaffrey)." Purdy's character shouldn't matter in the MVP discussion, but the easy schedule could help him out. Despite that, this year will be the biggest test of Purdy's abilities thus far. He's entering the season without Deebo Samuel, the team's top wide receiver over the last few years, after he was traded to the Washington Commanders. He may not have Brandon Aiyuk to start the year due to his recovery from a torn ACL and MCL midway through the 2024 season. He'll have to heavily rely on McCaffrey, returning from multiple serious injuries, and tight end George Kittle, who received a four-year, $76.4 million extension of his own this offseason that made him the highest-paid tight end in the league. If Purdy can thrive in this offense, especially early when Ricky Pearsall, Jauan Jennings, Demarcus Robinson and Jacob Cowing could be the top four wide receivers, and bring them back to the postseason, that may be enough to get him in the conversation for the top on-field honor in the sport. Richard Sherman charged with DUI stemming from 2024 arrest
Former NFL cornerback and current television analyst Richard Sherman was charged Tuesday with DUI stemming from a 2024 arrest in Seattle, King County District Court Records show. Sherman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Feb. 24, 2024. At the time, a Washington State Patrol spokesman told The Athletic no other details were available. Advertisement According to multiple reports, Tuesday's gross misdemeanor charge came one day after the results of a blood test taken the night Sherman was arrested were received from the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab. The tests showed that Sherman's blood alcohol level that night was around 0.11, above the legal limit of 0.08 in Washington. The statute of limitations on a gross misdemeanor charge in Washington is two years 'after its commission,' according to the Revised Code of Washington. The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to inquiries from The Athletic. Sherman is scheduled to be arraigned on June 30, court records show. Sherman has worked as an analyst on Amazon's 'Thursday Night Football' broadcast for the past three seasons. This is Sherman's second DUI charge in the last four years. In July 2021, he was charged with DUI along with four other misdemeanors. He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor offenses in May 2022 as part of an agreement to resolve those charges. Sherman, 37, played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro, Sherman was most known for his seven-year stint with Seattle, where he won a Super Bowl in 2013. He finished his career with Tampa Bay in 2021.

How to watch USMNT vs Saudi Arabia: Gold Cup stream link, TV channel, team news, prediction
The USMNT will try to make it two wins from two games to begin their 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup run on Thursday (9:15 pm ET), when they face Saudi Arabia at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. MORE — Pochettino hits back at Pulisic: 'I'm the head coach' Mauricio Pochettino's side snapped a four-game winless streak at home (first time since 1988) with a 5-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday, thanks in large part to two goals from Malik Tillman and a pair of assists from Diego Luna. The midfield duo played a part in each of the USMNT's first three goals, all in the first half, as they make their case not only for a spot on the 2026 World Cup but perhaps a place in the starting lineup — even when Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie are back in the mix. How to watch USMNT vs Saudi Arabia live, stream link and start time Kick off time: 9:15 pm ET, Thursday How to watch: FS1, TUDN Stream online: or the FOX Sports app USMNT focus, team news What's great about the USMNT's performance against T&T is that they scored five goals (on a very healthy 3.48 xG) while holding 70 percent of possession in the game. Almost regardless of opponent, the A-team has too often struggled to generate chances (and score them) when the opposition puts five defenders and four midfielders behind the ball. What's even better is that only four of their 21 shots were taken from outside the box, meaning they worked the ball deep into the penalty area (only 8 shots outside 12 yards) and didn't settle for speculative long-range attempts. Saudi Arabia focus, team news Saudi Arabia, the lone team in the tournament invited as a guest, beat Haiti 1-0 in their Group D opener. Al-Ittihad striker Saleh Al-Shehri scored from the penalty spot in the 21st minute. Al-Shehri is the only player in the Arabian Falcons' current squad with double-digit international goals (17). USMNT vs Saudi Arabia prediction The Saudis were quite poor with their limited possession (43 percent) against 83rd-ranked Haiti and will likely have even less to work with against the Yanks. Patience will be key again, but Luna will deliver the goods again. USMNT 3-1 Saudi Arabia.
