Tirunelveli ‘honour' killing case: Police sub-inspector couple picked up for inquiry

The Hindu5 days ago
The Palayamkottai police have picked up for questioning the parents — both Sub-Inspectors of Police — of a youth arrested on charges of murdering a Scheduled Caste (SC) man, who was hacked to death in Tirunelveli on Sunday (July 27, 2025).
Sources in the police said that the deceased, C. Kavin Selvaganesh, 27, an IT employee from Arumugamangalam near Eral in Thoothukudi district, had reportedly proposed to the sister of the accused, Surjith, 23. While Kavin worked for a Chennai-based IT company, the woman, a Siddha practitioner, was employed at a private clinic in KTC Nagar, Palayamkottai. She belongs to a community in the Most Backward Caste (MBC) list. When the woman's parents Saravanakumar and Krishnaveni got to know about their daughter's liasion with a Dalit, they reportedly objected to it.
What happened on July 27?
Kavin had returned to his native village Arumugamangalam to take his ailing grandfather for treatment to the clinic where the woman was working, in KTC Nagar, on Sunday afternoon. Upon learning that Kavin was at the clinic, the woman's younger brother, Surjith, went there and asked him to accompany him for 'conciliation talks.'
Kavin was riding a bike along Mangammaal Salai in KTC Nagar, with Surjith riding pillion. After covering some distance on the road leading to the Palayamkottai-Thoothukudi four-lane highway, Surjith allegedly attacked Kavin with a machete. Kavin stopped the two-wheeler and attempted to flee, but Surjith chased him down and hacked him to death.
Passersby alerted the Palayamkottai police, who rushed to the spot and apprehended Surjith. He reportedly told the police that Kavin had been harassing his elder sister under the guise of love, and that she did not reciprocate his feelings. 'Since he continued to harass my innocent sister despite her repeated warnings, I murdered Kavin,' police sources quoted him as saying.
Family alleges 'honour' killing
The post-mortem examination on Kavin's body was performed at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Monday (July 28). The relatives of the deceased, however, claimed to accept the body, alleging that it was an 'honour' killing.
'The couple had been in a relationship since their school days, and it continued up until yesterday. If it was truly unreciprocated love, as her family claims, they could have filed a complaint with the police, especially since the woman's parents are Sub-Inspectors,' said the relatives of the deceased.
'When it became clear to her family that she wanted to marry Kavin, they orchestrated this 'honour' killing. Therefore, the parents should also be arrested,' they added.
The police, after arresting Surjit, picked up Saravanakumar and Krishnaveni, who have been cited as accused 2 and 3 in the First Information Report (FIR), for inquiry. First Additional Sessions Judge Sathya, remanded Surjit to judicial custody till August 14.
Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, Santosh Hadimani said: 'As of now, we only have the version of the accused. Only further investigation can reveal the details of the case.'

Dalit activist faces judicial custody with two associates

Hisar: Dalit rights activist and advocate Rajat Kalsan and his two companions, Deepak Saini and Pravesh, have been remanded in 14-day judicial custody. The three of them appeared in court on Saturday after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a police team in Hisar's auto market. They were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. City police apprehended his associates during his one-day police remand. A bail application for all the three accused was submitted during court proceedings. The court sought a response from the police and scheduled the bail hearing for Monday. On Thursday, Narnaund police arrested advocate Kalsan in a separate case registered about six months ago, involving a social media post allegedly supporting the accused in the murder of a woman at Budana village. Kalsan was granted bail by a Hansi court in the case. However, soon after his release, Hisar Police arrested him in the latest case related to the alleged assault. The FIR against advocate Kalsan was registered at the City Police Station on the complaint of Hansi special staff sub-inspector Ravikant under various non-bailable charges. According to the complaint, Kalsan was named in an FIR lodged at Narnaund Police Station on July 29. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo On the night of July 30, at around 10PM, police found three individuals allegedly consuming alcohol inside a parked car in the old auto market, with Kalsan in the driver's seat. When police served him a notice to join the investigation, an altercation ensued. Kalsan and his companions allegedly exited the vehicle and attacked the officers, injuring a sub-inspector. Advocate Kalsan has been a prominent figure in Dalit activism, recently joining protests after the death of a youth named Ganesh in a DJ-related dispute in Hisar. He has also advocated for justice in the Bhatla case in Hansi and was a key legal representative in the high-profile 2010 Mirchpur Dalit atrocity case in the Narnaund region. Complaint submitted to NHRC Hisar-based advocate and social worker Bajrang Indal has submitted a joint complaint to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes regarding the manner of Rajat Kalsan's arrest. In his memorandum, Indal alleged that Kalsan—known for his advocacy in landmark Dalit rights cases like the Mirchpur massacre—was arrested on July 29 by police in plain clothes. He described it as a "kidnapping-style" operation. He also claimed that Kalsan was held in police custody without access to legal counsel or family visits and was not provided a copy of the FIR. The complaint went on to accuse the police of deliberately taking and circulating humiliating photos of Kalsan in a "criminal posture," which Indal said, was a violation of human dignity and an affront to both the Dalit community and the legal profession. He has called for a judicial inquiry into the episode. MSID:: 123062103 413 | Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Avoid deserted places, exercise caution: Embassy's advisory to Indians in Ireland

The Indian embassy in Dublin, Ireland, has issued an advisory to all Indian nationals to avoid deserted places and exercise caution for their personal safety. The advisory comes in the wake of a string of attacks on Indian nationals in Ireland. Meanwhile, officials say the matter has been taken up with the relevant Irish authorities in Dublin and also in Delhi. 'There has been an increase in instances of physical attacks reported against Indian citizens in Ireland recently. The Embassy is in touch with the authorities concerned in Ireland in this regard,' the advisory said. 'At the same time, all Indian citizens in Ireland are advised to take reasonable precautions for their personal security and avoid deserted areas, especially at odd hours,' it said, issuing emergency contact numbers for help. Last Sunday, a 32-year-old Indian-origin man, Santosh Yadav, was attacked by six teenagers in his Dublin apartment, leaving him with a fractured cheekbone. In a separate attack, a 40-year-old Indian man was beaten and stripped by a group of teenagers, raising concerns over the surge in racially motivated violence in the country. The authorities are now investigating the matter as a potential hate crime case. 'The recurrence of attacks on innocent, highly qualified technical experts and professionals has caused widespread fear among the community all over Ireland,' an Embassy official told The Indian Express over phone. 'The wellbeing of the Indian community is a matter of high priority to the embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs. The matter has been taken up with the relevant Irish authorities in Dublin and also in Delhi,' the official said. The embassy is also in touch with the wider Indian community and has assured them of every possible assistance compatible with diplomatic norms and constraints, the official said. Teresa Buczkowska, CEO of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, was quoted as saying by a Dublin-based news outlet, Dublin Live, that it appeared that the Indian community was a particular focus, but those attacks were definitely not limited to that community. On July 23, the Indian embassy shared a post on X highlighting the attack on the 40-year-old Indian national that happened in Dublin's Tallaght. 'The Embassy is in touch with the victim and his family. All the requisite assistance is being offered. The Embassy is also in touch with the relevant Irish authorities in this regard.' As per the data provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, there are approximately 80,000 Indian-origin persons in Ireland, of whom 33,898 are PIOs, approximately 40,000 are NRIs and approximately 10,000 Indian students. Most of them are engaged in healthcare, IT, engineering and senior management positions. Ireland has become a significant destination for Indian students seeking higher education, particularly post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students in the areas of engineering, technology and medicine. Ukraine hits military targets and pipeline in Russia

Ukraine said Saturday it hit military targets and a gas pipeline in drone attacks in Russia, where local authorities said three people were killed and two others wounded. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy attends the parliament session in Kyiv, Ukraine Thursday, July 17, 2025. (AP Photo/Vadym Sarakhan)(AP) Ukraine's SBU security service said the strikes, carried out Friday night by long-distance drones, hit a military airfield in the southwestern town of Primorsko-Akhtarsk. They caused a fire in an areas where Iranian-built Shahed drones -- relied on by Russia to attack Ukraine -- were stored, the SBU said. It said the strikes also hit a company, Elektropribor, in Russia's southern Penza region, which it said "works for the Russian military-industrial complex", making military digital networks, aviation devices, armoured vehicles and ships. The governor for the Penza region, Oleg Melnichenko, said on Telegram that one woman had been killed and two other people were wounded in that attack. Russia's defence ministry said its air-defence systems had destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory -- 34 over the Rostov region -- in a nearly nine-hour period, from Friday night to Saturday morning. An elderly man was killed inside a house that caught fire due to falling drone debris in the Samara region, governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev posted on Telegram. In the Rostov region, a guard at an industrial facility was killed after a drone attack and a fire in one of the site's buildings, acting Rostov governor Yuri Sliusar said. "The military repelled a massive air attack during the night," destroying drones over seven districts, Sliusar posted on Telegram. Heavy use of drones Ukraine has regularly used drones to hit targets inside Russia as it fights back against Moscow's full-scale invasion, launched in February 2022. Russia, too, has increasingly deployed the unmanned aerial devices as part of its offensive. An AFP analysis published on Friday showed that Russia's forces in July launched an unprecedented number of drones, 6,297 of them. The figure included decoy drones sent into Ukraine's skies in efforts to saturate the country's air-defence systems. In Ukraine's central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian drone attacks Friday night wounded three people, governor Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram. Several buildings, homes and cars were damaged, he said. Russian forces have claimed advances in Dnipropetrovsk, recently announcing the capture of two villages there, part of Moscow's accelerated capture of territory in July, according to AFP's analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Kyiv denies any Russian presence in the Dnipropetrovsk area. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire in the more than three-year conflict, said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were "unchanged". Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders. "The United States has proposed this. Ukraine has supported it. What is needed is Russia's readiness," he wrote on X.
