Gulf Insider23-05-2025
Posting defamatory comments on social media has come at a heavy price for a man in the UAE.
The Al Ain Court for Civil, Commercial, and Administrative Claims has ordered a young man to pay Dh70,000 in compensation to the owner of a commercial establishment for damaging the shop's reputation and causing financial losses through defamatory comments posted on a social media platform.
The case was brought by a businessman who demanded Dh200,000 in compensation for both material and moral damages, in addition to court fees and legal expenses. In his complaint, the claimant stated that the defendant had tarnished the reputation of his business by publishing statements that harmed its standing and resulted in financial loss. These statements were posted as comments on a social media platform.
The defendant had already been convicted for this act under a criminal court judgment.
In response, the defendant submitted a written defence requesting the court to dismiss the case. Alternatively, he asked the court to contact the Federal Tax Authority to provide the company's tax returns for the period during which the claimant alleged a decline in sales due to the defendant's actions. The defendant also sought to recover legal costs and enclosed documents, including one of the dependent's certificates and screenshots of online conversations.
In its judgment, the court noted that defendant had already been proven guilty in a previous judgment, finding him guilty of defamation. The court also ordered the defendant to pay the claimant Dh70,000 in compensation.

Al Ain Court Orders Man To Pay Dh160,000 In Fake Investment Case

The Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Cases Court has ordered a man to pay Dh160,000 to another in connection with a fraudulent investment scheme. According to court documents, the plaintiff stated that the defendant convinced him he owned private companies and solicited funds to invest on his behalf. Believing the claims, the plaintiff handed over Dh150,000 in two instalments, documented by a signed receipt. Soon after, the defendant allegedly began avoiding communication and eventually stopped answering calls. A forensic accounting expert appointed by the court found that the defendant had proposed a partnership in trade and foodstuffs, acknowledged receiving the money, and entered into an informal investment agreement with the plaintiff. However, the defendant failed to honour the agreed terms, later claiming the capital had been lost and refusing to provide accurate partnership accounts. The court ruled in favour of the plaintiff, ordering repayment of the Dh150,000 principal along with Dh20,000 in damages. The judgment also included 12 per cent annual legal interest from the date of filing until full settlement, in addition to court fees and expenses.

Dubai Court Fines Two Men Over Road Accident

The Dubai Traffic Court has fined two Asian men after finding them both responsible for a road accident in which one ran over the other. Court documents show that the incident happened when a taxi driver, who was not driving carefully enough, struck a pedestrian. The victim suffered several injuries. However, investigators also discovered that the pedestrian was crossing the road from a non-designated area, which is against traffic rules. An expert's report concluded that both the driver and the pedestrian shared responsibility for the accident. The court ordered the taxi driver, who did not attend the hearing, to pay a fine of Dh4,000 for unintentionally causing injury. The pedestrian, who was present in court and denied any wrongdoing, was fined Dh200 for breaking pedestrian rules. The judge dismissed his denial after reviewing the evidence.

Couple Jailed For Forcing Woman Into Prostitution

A husband and wife have been jailed for three years in Bahrain and fined BD2,000 each for trafficking a compatriot woman into prostitution. The First High Criminal Court ordered their permanent deportation after they serve their sentences and required them to cover the cost of returning the victim to her home country. The case involved a promise of work as a hairdresser in a women's salon. On arrival in Bahrain, the victim's passport was taken by the male defendant, who said he would keep it safe. She stayed in the couple's flat, and was then told her work would be prostitution. Police inquiries led to the couple, who were arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution, then sent to the First High Criminal Court. The Public Prosecution said the woman came from a low-income family and had sought work to support her elderly mother. The female defendant arranged the job offer and travel. The investigation began after a report from the Anti-Human Trafficking Division at the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Evidence.
