US health department reinstates task force on safer childhood vaccines

Aug 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Thursday it is reinstating its task force on a federal panel for safer childhood vaccines after 27 years. The panel was created by Congress to improve the safety, quality and oversight of vaccines administered to American children. The original task force was disbanded in 1998, said the health agency, adding that National Institutes of Health director Jay Bhattacharya will serve as chairman of the task force. The task force will work closely with the Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines, the HHS said.

The big changes coming to these popular snacks next year

Mars Wrigley North America is set to remove artificial colours from several of its popular confectionery products in the United States from next year. The affected brands include M&M's Chocolate, Skittles Original, Extra Gum Spearmint, and Starburst Original fruit chews. This initiative aligns with the Trump administration's 'Make America Healthy Again' plan, which targets synthetic dyes in foods. The candy manufacturer quietly announced the change last month, confirming the products would be available online across the country. Mars Wrigley has indicated it will share further commitments and timelines for additional items once fully effective and scalable solutions are identified.

Hack at UnitedHealth's tech unit impacted 192.7 million people, US health dept website shows

Aug 14 (Reuters) - The cyberattack at UnitedHealth Group's (UNH.N), opens new tab tech unit last year impacted 192.7 million people, the U.S. health department's website showed on Thursday. In January, the company had estimated the hack at Change Healthcare affected the personal information of 190 million people. The cyberattack — the largest healthcare data breach in the United States to date — was disclosed in February last year. The unit was infiltrated by hackers who identified themselves as the "Blackcat" ransomware group, causing widespread disruptions in claims processing and impacting patients and providers across the country. The number of impacted people was posted on a list of data breaches maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' office for civil rights. UnitedHealth did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Information made vulnerable in the UnitedHealth attack is believed to include health insurance member IDs, patient diagnoses, treatment information and social security numbers, as well as billing codes used by providers.
