The 2026 FIFA World Cup is less than a year away, and you could argue that the U.S. Men's National Team is in a crisis. When the USMNT named Mauricio Pochettino as head coach last September, it was supposed to be a foundational moment for the program. The Yanks brought in one of the world's most respected managers to lead them into a golden age that coincided with the United States co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico. But best laid plans of mice and men often go awry, and things have taken a turn for the worse for Pochettino's side. The USMNT has lost its last four matches to Panama, Canada, Turkey and Switzerland by a combined score of 9-2, which has put heaps of pressure on the Stars and Stripes ahead of this summer's Gold Cup, which gets underway Sunday evening at PayPal Park in San Jose. The Yanks are massive -900 favorites to beat Trinidad & Tobago, the 100th-ranked country in FIFA's World Cup Rankings, in their opening match Sunday. In a vacuum, those drastic odds make sense. Steve Roberts-Imagn Images The Americans will topple from their spot as the No. 16 team in the world when the newest rankings get released, but they're miles better than the Soca Warriors, whose roster is full of players plying their trade in the USL, Canadian Premier League and in the Caribbean. That said, there is perhaps no better time for a team like Trinidad & Tobago to take on the Americans. Not only is the team in disarray off the field, but it will not be bringing its best roster to the Gold Cup with Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Gio Reyna unavailable for a variety of reasons. Tyler Adams, the industrious midfielder and captain of the squad, is doubtful. With all that star power missing from the lineup, the talent gap between Trinidad & Tobago and the United States shrinks. It still heavily favors the Yanks, but it does bring down the chances of an all-out rout Sunday night. That is important to note, because the USMNT will want to make a statement Sunday that they aren't in a tailspin. The only way to do that is to dominate Trinidad & Tobago. Perhaps the USMNT does just that. They come out on fire and roll over the Soca Warriors, but with the way things are trending with this team, that is a lot easier said than done. The more likely scenario is that Trinidad & Tobago dig in and force the United States to grind out a result Sunday. By doing that the Soca Warriors will bridge the gap between these two teams enough to make them a very tempting underdog, considering the price. Italy Turns to Gennaro Gattuso to get World Cup Hopes Back on Track
Former hard-tackling midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was named Italy coach on Sunday, tasked with reviving the country's already-flagging World Cup qualifying hopes. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was fired last week after Italy lost its opening qualifier 3-0 at Norway to spark fears that the four-time champion will fail to qualify for a third straight World Cup. Gattuso lifted one of those World Cups as a player, in 2006. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian soccer, the blue shirt is like a second skin for him," Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said. "His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the national team's next matches. "Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the willingness and total dedication with which he accepted this challenge." Claudio Ranieri was the Italian soccer federation's top choice to replace Spalletti but he turned down the offer. Gattuso's last coaching job was at Hajduk Split but he left the Croatian club by mutual consent at the start of the month after just one season in charge. As a player, Gattuso also won two league titles and two Champions League trophies with Milan, where he made 468 appearances and scored 11 goals. His only goal in 73 appearances for Italy was a fierce 25-meter strike against England in a 1-0 win in November 2000. Gattuso's only trophy as a coach was the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2010. Italy is already nine points behind Norway in its World Cup qualifying group, albeit having played two matches fewer than the group leader. The Azzurri followed up its dismal opening loss with a 2-0 win over minnow Moldova last Monday in what was Spalletti's final match in charge. He had revealed that he was being fired the previous day. Gattuso's first match as Italy coach will be at home to Estonia on Sept. 5. Israel is also in five-team Group I. Italy hosts Norway in the final round on Nov. 16. Only the group winner advances directly to the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The runner-up enters playoff brackets to be played next March. That was the stage where Italy was eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia and ruled out of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively. The AC Milan legend replaces Luciano Spalletti, who announced his own sacking at a news conference last week. Gattuso, 47, made 73 appearances for Italy and was a member of their 2006 World Cup-winning squad, and will now lead his country into the same tournament 20 years later. A 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat by Norway on 6 June sealed Spalletti's fate. The Italian football federation (FIGC) confirmed Gattuso will be presented to the media on Thursday. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football," FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said. "The blue jersey is like a second skin for him.
