Spanish bar where Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr shot dead to reopen under new name

Daily Record20-06-2025
Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan were killed in Monaghan's Bar in Fuengirola.
The Spanish bar where two senior figures from a Scottish organised crime group were brutally shot dead is set to reopen this weekend under a new name.
Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jnr, 46, were shot dead at Monaghan's Bar in Fuengirola in the Costa Del Sol on May 31.
The bar, understood to have have been co-owned by Monaghan, will go under the new name of The Irish Rover, reports the BBC.
Michael Terrence Riley, from Merseyside, was arrested in England on Friday June 13 in connection with the alleged shootings in the Costa del Sol on May 31 under an international arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities.
The 44-year-old has been charged with two counts of murder and one of possession of a firearm. He appeared via videolink from HMP Wandsworth on Thursday June 19 to confirm his name and date of birth during a brief hearing.
The hearing was adjourned until Friday June 20 due to problems with the feed, so he can appear in the dock in person. His full extradition hearing is expected to be held later this year.
Mongahan and Lyons Jnr, both linked to the Lyons crime clan, were targeted by a lone gunman in front of friends and customers after watching the Champions League final.
The Spanish National Police noted the suspect's gun jammed after he killed Lyons Jnr with a single shot outside the bar, before pursuing Monaghan inside and firing two shots which proved fatal.
Speaking at a press conference in Spain on Tuesday, Chief Supt Pedro Agudo Novo said: "The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs.
"In this case we are not talking about an independent hired killer but an internal member of the rival Daniels gang who ends up assassinating two members of an enemy gang."
The Chief Supt also alleged the killer was not an independent hired killer but an internal member of the rival Daniel gang.
However Police Scotland, who have been investigating the war between the rival crime syndicates for decades, seemed to suggest the killing had nothing to do with their rivalry - or the war on the Daniel mob being waged by Lyons associate Ross McGill.
Henchmen of the Dubai-based former Rangers ultra have targeted the Daniel mob and associates since March over a fallout regarding a stolen stash of cocaine.
Homes, people and businesses have been targeted in firebombings, knife attacks and shootings, in Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding areas, and is being investigated by Police Scotland as part of Operation Portaledge.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston previously said: "We are not aware of any current evidence which suggests the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge.
"We are aware of the statement from the Spanish Police and although we cannot comment on an ongoing investigation in another jurisdiction, our position remains that we have no current evidence to suggest that this incident was orchestrated from Scotland.
"We are aware of the arrest of an individual in the Merseyside area and will continue to support colleagues in Spain where necessary and if required by them."

Labour MSP is charged over indecent images: Colin Smyth suspended by party after arrest

The Scottish Labour MSP Colin Smyth has been arrested and charged with the possession of indecent images of children. The party has suspended the former modern studies teacher, who served as Scottish Labour's top official before entering Holyrood in 2016, and withdrawn the whip. Mr Smyth said he was in 'shock' and was cooperating with the authorities. A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: 'On Tuesday, 5 August, 2025, officers executed a warrant at a property in Dumfries. 'A 52-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with possession of indecent images. He is due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court at a later date.' The married father-of-two is now sitting as an Independent MSP for South Scotland. In a statement, Mr Smyth said: 'These events have come as a shock and this is a deeply stressful time. 'I am obviously cooperating fully with any inquiries and hope the matter can be resolved quickly. 'I am not able to comment further at this stage, and in the meantime I would ask that my family and friends are given privacy.' A Scottish Labour spokesman said: 'The whip has been removed from Colin Smyth MSP, pending an investigation. 'We cannot comment further on this matter while the investigation is ongoing.' It is understood the MSP was 'administratively suspended' after the party became aware of the police investigation. Mr Smyth appeared in a video with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar which was posted on social media two days after the arrest, but it has since been deleted. In the week after the arrest, Mr Smyth's own account on X continued to post pictures of him meeting people at the Dumfries & Lockerbie Agricultural Show held on August 2. On August 13, he held a meeting with the Scottish Pensioners' Forum, and on August 15 held a 'doorstep surgery' with a Dumfries Labour councillor about roads and bus services. Born in Dumfries, Mr Smyth was first elected for Labour as a Dumfries & Galloway councillor in 2007. He served as Scottish Labour general secretary from 2008 until 2012, and helped run its disastrous 2011 election campaign, when the SNP won an unprecedented majority. He was elected to Holyrood for the first time in 2016 as a list MSP for South Scotland. He backed Mr Sarwar in the 2021 Scottish Labour leadership race and was given a key role as the party's spokesman on the constitution as the SNP ramped up efforts to secure a second referendum and end the Union. Mr Smyth, whose family hails from Northern Ireland, stood unsuccessfully against the Tories in Dumfriesshire in 2021 election, but he returned to Holyrood via the regional list. In 2023, Mr Sarwar made him his champion for older people and he is currently piloting a member's Bill through Holyrood to establish a Commissioner for Older People. Mr Smyth was re-selected in April as Scottish Labour's candidate in Dumfriesshire for the 2026 Holyrood election. But his suspension means he is currently unable to stand for the party. Until this month, Mr Smyth was convener of Holyrood's economy and fair work committee and a substitute member of its public audit and standards committees. He is married with two daughters. A spokesman for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service added: 'A standard prosecution report has been received by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service from Police Scotland in relation to a 52-year-old man.'

Spanish watchdog investigates judge who charged Pedro Sánchez's wife

The judge leading an investigation into the wife of the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, is himself to be investigated by the state's legal watchdog. The investigation, first reported by El Confidencial, follows two written complaints filed by one of Sánchez's closest allies, Félix Bolaños, after he was questioned in April by the judge, Juan Carlos Peinado, as part of the court proceedings against Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez. The Socialist party leader's wife is facing allegations of influence peddling, corruption in business, misappropriation of public funds and professional intrusion. Gómez, along with Cristina Álvarez, an official employed at the prime minister's office who acted as her aide and who also faces a charge of embezzlement of public funds, have been summoned to appear in court in September. In his complaints, submitted on June 4 and July 29, Bolaños — the minister of the presidency, justice and relations with parliament — accused Judge Peinado of 'irregularities' during the questioning. • Spanish PM's wife Begoña Gómez charged with embezzlement of public funds Sources from the watchdog, the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), told the Spanish daily El País they had launched an investigation into the magistrate in line with procedure. The face-to-face encounter between Bolaños and the judge took place on April 16 in the former's office in La Moncloa, the prime ministerial palace, as part of the magistrate's investigation into allegations that Gómez misappropriated public funds when she hired an assistant. Bolaños was being questioned as a witness. Félix Bolaños JJ GUILLEN/EPA One exchange that prompted the minister's complaint came when the judge repeatedly pressed him to confirm whether he had ever seen Gómez with her aide at La Moncloa, instead of focusing on possible acts of embezzlement. When Bolaños smiled, the judge snapped: 'I don't know why you are smiling,' leading to a tense exchange. Peinado went on to accuse the minister of evading questions and warned him of breaching the Criminal Procedure Act. The development is the latest twist in a scandal affecting the Spanish prime minister, who has been rocked by corruption cases involving senior Socialist party figures. The inquiry into his wife has dominated headlines in Spain since the first allegations surfaced last year. • Almodóvar dismisses Pedro Sánchez scandal as a conspiracy Sánchez has insisted on his wife's innocence and condemned what he calls an orchestrated campaign of 'lawfare' by the right-wing opposition to weaken his minority coalition government.

Labour MSP arrested over indecent images of children

A Labour MSP has been arrested by police and suspended by the party for allegedly possessing indecent images of children. Colin Smyth, a South Scotland MSP, was charged after Police Scotland attended a property in Dumfries earlier this month. He has been an MSP since 2016 and has held several frontbench roles, most recently in April 2023, and previously served as Scottish Labour's general secretary. The married father-of-two's suspension from the party emerged after the Scottish Parliament's website was changed to list him as an independent MSP. Earlier this year, Mr Smyth was selected as the Labour candidate for the Dumfriesshire constituency in the 2026 Scottish Parliament election. A Police Scotland spokesman said: 'On Tuesday, 5 August, 2025, officers executed a warrant at a property on Marchfield Avenue, Dumfries. 'A 52-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with possession of indecent images. He is due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court at a later date.' It is understood that the images involved children. A spokesman for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Scotland's public prosecution service, said a standard prosecution report had been received in relation to a 52-year-old man. 'Events have come as shock' In a statement, Mr Smyth said: 'These events have come as a shock and this is a deeply stressful time. I am obviously cooperating fully with any inquiries and hope the matter can be resolved quickly. 'I am not able to comment further at this stage, and in the meantime I would ask that my family and friends are given privacy.' A Scottish Labour spokesman said: 'The whip has been removed from Colin Smyth MSP, pending an investigation. We cannot comment further on this matter while the investigation is ongoing.' Two days after his arrest, Smyth appeared in a video with party leader Anas Sarwar, which was posted on social media but has since been deleted. It is understood he was suspended by Scottish Labour after it became aware of the police investigation. Mr Smyth was brought up on a council estate in Dumfries and he later became a modern studies teacher. The former Dumfries and Galloway councillor served as Scottish Labour transport spokesman from 2017 to 2021 under the leadership of Richard Leonard, who was a close ally of Jeremy Corbyn. Mr Smyth was appointed the party's spokesman on the constitution and external affairs after Mr Sarwar replaced Mr Leonard in 2021. The arrest was made while MSPs were on their summer break.
