M'sian property tycoon pleads guilty in case linked to S'pore ex-minister
SINGAPORE : Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng pleaded guilty to abetting the obstruction of justice at the state court today, in a case linked to former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran, according to local media reports.
The Malaysian businessman, who played a key role in bringing the F1 race to Singapore, admitted to the charge related to a December 2022 trip to Qatar, for which Iswaran had accepted Ong's invitation, The Straits Times (ST) reported.
A second charge of abetting a public servant in obtaining gifts will be taken into consideration for sentencing.
Ong was first charged on Oct 4, 2024. His guilty plea followed multiple pre-trial conferences and court adjournments.
The prosecution said Iswaran did not pay for his flight to Doha or his return flight to Singapore, nor did he pay for his hotel accommodation.
Iswaran had travelled to Doha on Ong's private jet, while his hotel stay and return business-class flight were paid for by Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP) on Ong's instructions.
In October 2024, Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the High Court after pleading guilty to four charges of obtaining valuable items as a public servant and one count of obstruction of justice.
The obstruction of justice charge was linked to the S$5,700 Iswaran repaid to SGP for the cost of his business-class flight from Doha to Singapore in 2022.
The prosecution said Ong also knew that Iswaran's act of making the repayment was likely to obstruct the course of justice, ST reported.
Principal district judge Lee Lit Cheng set sentencing for Aug 15. Ong's bail of S$800,000 meanwhile was extended.
In mitigation, Ong's defence team said that he suffered from multiple myeloma, a type of cancer, which rendered him immunocompromised and would endanger his life if he were to contract an infection in prison.
The prosecution accepted that the exercise of judicial mercy was warranted in Ong's case and did not object to the maximum fine for him instead of imprisonment, according to ST.

'If no charges are made against this person by Thursday, I will go and give a class to teach this 'ah pek' how to correctly put up a flag,' he said in a video on Facebook. He said 16 reports had been received nationwide over the incident, including 12 from within Penang. The video of the incident showed a man hoisting the flag while another recorded it. Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner said he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the flag and did not notice that it was upside down. The owner said he rectified the mistake immediately after realising it. He apologised for the blunder and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation.

MACC probe into trio over citizenship applications ongoing, says Azalina
MACC previously said the arrests in May were linked to Op Outlander, involving a syndicate allegedly registering non-citizen births as Malaysians using fake supporting documents. PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is still investigating the case in which it arrested two home ministry officials and a member of the public in May over alleged corruption in expediting citizenship applications. Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said MACC cannot divulge any details on the investigation so far. 'According to MACC, the case is still under investigation. As such, MACC is legally bound by subsection 29(4) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 not to disclose any of the investigation's details,' she said in a parliamentary reply. Azalina was responding to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who asked the prime minister if there had been any developments on the arrests on May 8. MACC had said the trio were arrested in an operation in Putrajaya after it received information related to the case. It said the arrests were linked to Op Outlander, which saw the arrest of a civil servant believed to have been the mastermind of a syndicate allegedly registering non-citizen births as Malaysian citizens using fake supporting documents. Azalina also said MACC cannot answer as to the status of its investigation into the late Daim Zainuddin and former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as one of the cases relates to a matter that is sub judice, or under judicial consideration. 'The question is in violation of 23(1)(g) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, and thus should not be answered,' she said. Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) had asked the prime minister to state the status of MACC's investigation into Daim and Ismail, including whether the investigation involves their family members and the total value of the assets involved. In June, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the agency had finished its probe into the corruption and money laundering allegations linked to Ismail. He said the investigation paper had been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor's office for further action, and a decision on whether to press charges may be made 'within a month'. Ismail, the Bera MP, had been called in by MACC for multiple rounds of questioning since February. MACC is investigating the discovery of about RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit, seized in raids on the residences of four men and three other premises believed to be 'safe houses'. It was also reported in May that MACC had opened eight new investigation papers into 'high-value' assets linked to Daim and his family members after receiving new information from overseas. MACC said in July that the value of the overseas assets, found in more than 10 countries including the US, the UK, Switzerland, Singapore, Italy, Japan, Indonesia and several African countries, are estimated to exceed RM3 billion.
