Karnataka man dies after falling into fire pit during Muharram ritual
The 40-year-old victim, identified as Hanumanth, was preparing for the festival when he accidentally fell into the fire pit used in a key ritual during Muharram. According to the police, cited by news agency ANI, he was taken to the Laigasur Government Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
In a separate incident in Bihar, at least one person was killed and 24 others were injured due to electrocution during a Muharram procession in Darbhanga district on Saturday evening.
Darbhanga District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar said the accident happened when a portion of the tazia came in contact with a high-tension electric wire while the procession was passing through Kakorha village under the jurisdiction of Sakatpur police station.
"One person died and 24 others were injured in the incident," he told PTI.
He added, 'The injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital, and their condition was stated to be out of danger.' District administration officials and police personnel at the scene immediately rushed the victims to the nearest hospital.
Security beefed up across country
Muharram is being observed this year on Sunday, July 6. Security has been tightened across the country, including in New Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, in anticipation of large processions.
In Delhi, the police have implemented detailed traffic arrangements to ensure public safety and smooth vehicular movement.
Speaking to ANI, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said, "As Muharram is on June 6 in Delhi, we have set up detailed arrangements for traffic. It will be our job to provide diversions to the traffic, and the public should feel minimal inconvenience. When the procession is underway, we will provide some diversion for it. Detailed arrangements have been issued, and we will remain in the fields to closely monitor the Muharram procession..."
Gupta also mentioned that preparations are underway for the Kanwar Yatra, another major religious event that draws lakhs of devotees.

District magistrate (DM) of Gopalganj, Pawan Kumar Sinha, said: "The altercation began when the two akhara groups disagreed over stunt performances. A person was injured in the clash. He was admitted to the nearest hospital where his condition is reported to be stable." Tension also arose in Katihar district on Sunday when two communities engaged in a dispute during a Muharram procession near a Mahavir temple in the Naya Tola locality. Both groups started pelting stones at each other, leading to damage to several vehicles. Denying injury to any person in the incident, Katihar DM, Manesh Kumar Meena, said: "The situation was brought under control by the authorities without any injuries reported to anyone. 16 booked for breaking barricades during Muharram procession in Ujjain
At least 16 individuals have been booked for taking an unauthorised route and breaching police barricades during a Muharram procession in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain in the early hours of Sunday (July 6, 2025), leading to injuries to several police personnel, officials said. According to the police, the incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. when a large group of participants allegedly forced a ceremonial horse through police barricades near the Khajurwadi Masjid under the jurisdiction of Jiwajiganj police station, resulting in the collapse of both the barricades and the horse. A purported video of the incident surfaced on social media, purportedly showing a group of youth carrying sticks and jumping over the fallen barricades. The video also appears to show the horse collapsing and police resorting to a baton charge to disperse the crowd. City Superintendent of Police (Jiwajiganj) Sumit Agrawal told The Hindu that the ceremonial horse belonged to one Irfan alias Lalla, who has been named in the FIR along with 15 unidentified individuals. The case has been registered under Sections 191(1)(2), 121(1), and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). 'At least four to five of our personnel suffered injuries in the incident. They have been given treatment and X-rays have been done. We also had to resort to some lathi charge to manage the situation,' Mr. Agrawal said, adding that the procession was subsequently completed along the pre-decided route under adequate security arrangements. 'The procession concluded around 1 p.m. today [Sunday]. We are now working to arrest Irfan and identify the other individuals involved in the incident,' he said. Mr. Agrawal said that a meeting with local community leaders had been held at the police control room a few days earlier, where the route for the procession was finalised and reconfirmed on Saturday (July 6, 2025) morning. 'This is why we had barricades in place at that point — it was not part of the agreed route. But some individuals deliberately diverted the procession and breached the barricades to create a nuisance. This seems to have been pre-planned,' he said. 'The situation is now normal and there is no tension in the area. However, we remain on alert, and adequate security deployment has been made to prevent any untoward incident,' Mr. Agrawal added. Maksood Ali, a local Congress leader and organiser of a Muharram procession in a neighbouring locality, demanded strict action against those responsible for the breach. 'The procession was taken out on the ninth day of Muharram. As per the route, it was to go straight, but some people diverted it towards the police barricades on the road to Geeta Colony. These people tried to enter forcibly. If someone had objections [to the route], they should have raised their concerns during the meeting at the police control room,' Mr. Ali, who is also the joint secretary of the Eid Miladunnabi Juloos Committee, told reporters. 'This is how they become a laughing stock and lathi charge is done on them. Action should be taken against those responsible for this, as well as those present at the meeting, since they failed to ensure adherence to the route,' he added.

Lathi Charge, Case Against 16 After Attempt To Divert Muharram Procession Route In Ujjain
Bhopal: Tensions flared during a Muharram procession in Ujjain's Begumbagh area when a group of men allegedly broke police barricades and attempted to divert the religious procession from its pre-approved route. The incident led to a mild lathi charge by police, injuries to two officers, and legal action against 16 people, including the procession organiser Irfan Khan alias Lalla. According to the police, the incident occurred during the traditional 9th Muharram horse procession. While the route had been decided and mutually agreed upon by the administration and community leaders in meetings held over the past ten days, Mr Khan and his associates allegedly attempted to divert the procession from the designated Khajurwali Masjid-Nikas Chauraha path towards Abdalpura. When stopped, they reportedly broke through police barricades, leading to chaos. "In the past ten days, multiple meetings were held with the Muslim community to finalise the procession route. Everyone signed an agreement. Despite this, the barricades were broken. Two policemen were injured, and mild force was used to disperse the crowd," said Ujjain SP Pradeep Sharma. The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 191, 192, and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to obstruction of public servants and disobedience of lawful orders. CCTV footage from the area is being analysed to identify and arrest the other accused. The Seerat Committee - a group formed within Muslim communities dedicated to promoting the understanding of the Seerat (also known as Sirah), which refers to the life, character, and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad - acknowledged the fault. Maqsood Ali, Joint Secretary of the Committee, said, "The police had clearly decided the route during prior meetings, and even a bond was signed. If any changes were required, they should have been communicated in those meetings. Violating the decided path was wrong, and those responsible must face action." The injured policemen are reported to be stable. Meanwhile, the Ujjain police have said they are conducting a thorough review to avoid such confrontations in the future.
