Bodies of five skiers found near Swiss resort
GENEVA — The bodies of five skiers have been found by rescuers near Switzerland's luxury Zermatt resort.
They were recovered a day after emergency services were alerted by a group of climbers ascending the Rimpfischhorn — a 4,199-metre peak in the Valais Alps — to several pairs of skis left unattended near the summit.
Aerial and ground searches led to the discovery of the bodies below the summit on the Adler Glacier, Valais local police said in a statement on Sunday.
The victims were found at varying altitudes on avalanche debris in high altitude areas near the Swiss-Italian border.
Three bodies were located in one area and two more were discovered higher up on a narrow patch of snow, rescue service Air Zermatt said.
A fifth pair of skis was later found during the search, confirming that the group had traveled as a party of five. Their identities have not yet been formally released. The public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.Zermatt is one of Switzerland's more premium Alpine resorts, visited by affluent British and other European skiers. But the climb to Rimpfischhorn is considered a more advanced expedition, around five hours from the resort. There are a number of approaches to the climb, all of them requiring an overnight in a high hut. From Zermatt the usual way is to take lifts to Blauherd at 2570 meters. In a separate incident on Friday night, Air Zermatt was also involved in a challenging mountain rescue on the Fiescherhörner, where four alpinists were stranded amid fog and high winds. The initial evacuation attempt had to be aborted due to the weather, but a second attempt just after midnight brought all four to safety. — BBC

BBC defends Gaza coverage after White House criticism
LONDON: The BBC Wednesday defended its reporting of an incident in which Palestinians were killed near a Gaza aid center, after the White House accused the broadcaster of taking 'the word of Hamas.' Gaza's civil defense agency said Israeli gunfire killed at least 31 people on Sunday near the US-backed aid center. The Israeli military, however, denied its troops had fired on civilians in or around the center, and both it and the aid center's administrator accused Hamas of sowing false rumors. Responding to a question about the incident, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday the BBC had to 'correct and take down' its story about the incident. 'The administration is aware of those reports and we are currently looking into the veracity of them because, unfortunately, unlike some in the media, we don't take the word of Hamas with total truth,' she said. 'We like to look into it when they speak, unlike the BBC, who had multiple headlines,' she said, citing stories that gave different death tolls. 'And then, oh, wait, they had to correct and take down their entire story, saying 'We reviewed the footage and couldn't find any evidence of anything',' she added. But the BBC said the White House claims were not accurate and that it had not removed its story. 'The claim the BBC took down a story after reviewing footage is completely wrong. We did not remove any story and we stand by our journalism,' it said in a statement. It said headlines giving varying death tolls were 'totally normal' journalistic practice due to the story being 'updated throughout the day with the latest fatality figures as they came in from various sources.' It said the death tolls were always 'clearly attributed, from the first figure of 15 from medics, through the 31 killed from the Hamas-run health ministry to the final Red Cross statement of 'at least 21',' it added. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said its field hospital in Rafah received 179 people, including 21 pronounced dead on arrival. Leavitt also criticized the Washington Post for its reporting of the incident. The Post deleted one article over sourcing issues 'because it and early versions of the article didn't meet Post fairness standards.' 'The article and headline were updated on Sunday evening making it clear that there was no consensus about who was responsible.' The BBC has previously faced criticism of its coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict. In February, it apologized and admitted 'serious flaws' over a documentary — 'Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone' — after it emerged its 13-year-old narrator was the son of a senior Hamas figure.

Ex Biden Official Accuses Israel of Committing ‘War Crimes' in Gaza
Former US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that he believes Israel has committed 'war crimes' in Gaza, according to Sky News. Despite denying this fact during press conferences held under the Biden administration, Miller confessed that Israel undoubtedly committed crimes during its war in Gaza since October 2023. 'It is without a doubt true that Israel has committed war crimes,' he told British media Sky News. He also noted that he could not have unveiled this opinion while he served as the US State Department spokesperson. 'While you're at the podium you're not expressing your personal opinion, you're expressing the conclusions of the United States government,' he said. Although many pioneering genocide scholars in the world state that Israel's actions in Gaza constitute a genocide, Miller rejected to call it a genocide. Miller said it was an 'open question' whether Israel 'has pursued a policy to deliberately committing war crimes or is acting reckless in a way that aids and abets war crimes.' However, he said that it was 'almost certainly' that individual Israeli military members committed war crimes.
