Man gets decades for hitting 61-year-old with car, killing him

ALBION, Mich. (WOOD) — A man will spend decades in prison for hitting a 61-year-old with his car and killing him last year in Albion, according to the Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office. Orlando Capado Billingsley, 46, was found guilty in October of second-degree murder, reckless driving causing death and driving while license suspended causing death, prosecutors say. On Friday, prosecutors announced, Billingsley was sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison for second-degree murder. He also received lesser sentences on the driving charges, to run concurrently, and credit for more than 1.5 years served. Albion murder suspect turns self in, arraigned The conviction stems from the April 19, 2023, death of Stanley Wilson. According to the prosecutor's office, around 11 p.m. that night, police responded to a report of screams in the area of Sycamore Court and Sycamore Street. When they arrived on scene, they found Stanley Wilson, of Battle Creek, in a grassy area between apartment buildings. Prosecutors say the 61-year-old had suffered extensive trauma to the head and face. He died on scene. 'Investigations revealed that the altercation leading to Wilson's death began earlier that day when a dispute broke out between two children, escalating into a confrontation between parents,' the release says. Billingsley's family became involved, and there was 'a violent altercation' at Billingsley's home, according to the Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office. Once it was over, prosecutors say Billingsley followed Wilson and others as they walked away, got into his Dodge Charger, drove on the lawn between apartment buildings and chased Wilson as he ran away. They say surveillance video caught the moment when Billingsley hit Wilson with his Charger, 'dragging him a significant distance before (Wilson's) body was dislodged.' 'The conviction brings closure to the tragic case,' prosecutors wrote in the release, 'and the community remains in mourning over the loss of Stanley Wilson.' Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media, Inc.
