All change as Aber and Newtown exit Cymru Premier

BBC News04-05-2025
Aberystwyth Town and Newtown will have new managers next season as they adjust to life outside the JD Cymru Premier. Both clubs had been ever presents in the league since its formation in 1992, but the two mid Wales clubs will be in tier two next season.Antonio Corbisiero returned to Aberystwyth to replace Anthony Williams in November 2024.The Seasiders did reach the final of the Nathaniel MG Cup, losing 1-0 to The New Saints, but ultimately Corbisiero could not save the club from relegation."I'd like to thank everybody at the club for the opportunity of leading the team in the fight for survival this season," Corbisiero."Sadly, it wasn't to be and I'm gutted for everybody involved that relegation was the outcome.
"My thanks go to the fans who have been with us all the way — especially the incredible support at the Cup Final in February."It'd be fantastic to see that support week in, week out next season for a new manager to help get this club back to the JD Cymru Premier."Where Aberystwyth will play next season - JD Cymru North or JD Cymru South - remains unclear with the Ceredigion club waiting on the licensing processes for tiers two and three.Newtown had sacked manager Callum McKenzie with two games of the league season remaining and before their fate had been decided.Craig Williams took charge of those final two games, but Newtown were relegated in their penultimate game, defeat at home by already-doomed Aberystwyth. The Robins have acted quickly to make a new appointment, with former Guislfield boss Nathan Leonard who had been Newtown assistant – an experienced manager at tier two level – now in charge."He demonstrated a clear, ambitious plan for how he wants to develop the team both on and off the pitch," Newtown chairman Nick Evans said."His values align closely with the club's identity and aspirations and we're confident he is the right person to lead us in the next chapter of our journey."Both clubs will be looking to make immediate returns to the top-flight next season at a time of big changes for the Cymru Premier. The league will be increased from 12 to 16 teams with six teams, three from the two tier two divisions, promoted in time for the 2026-27 season.

Aberystwyth Town new stand gets planning permission

Plans to redevelop the grounds of one of the oldest football clubs in Wales – which includes a new 310-seater stand – have been approved by Ceredigion County Council. In an application recommended for approval at the August 13 meeting of Ceredigion County Council's development management committee, Aberystwyth Town Football Club sought permission for the redevelopment of its grounds at Park Avenue Stadium, Aberystwyth Football Ground, its home since 1907. A supporting statement from agent JMS Planning and Development said the proposal sought 'full planning permission for the demolition of the existing main stand and the creation of a new clubhouse, turnstile, changing rooms, business unit and improvements to the existing seated and standing terraces which will include new roof canopies and all associated works'. It added: 'Aberystwyth Town Football Club is proudly one of the oldest football clubs in Wales, whereby the club was founded some 140 years ago in 1884. The club is one of the founding members of what is now known as the 'Cymru Premier', of which it is only one of two teams to have never been relegated since its inception in 1992. 'The men's senior team is loyally supported by local community and has seen an increase in attendance over the past couple of years, reaching nearly 6,000 spectators over the year for the men's team alone. A number of Cymru Premier matches are broadcast live from the ground each season on S4C and streamed online to a worldwide audience. The Football Association of Wales recently confirmed a new structure and strategy to the league with the aim of boosting its commercial profile, competitiveness, and fan interest both nationally and internationally. 'As a Premier European Division, clubs are provided the opportunity to qualify for UEFA competitions and compete across the Continent, whereby it is imperative that facilities and infrastructure across the country are developed to meet UEFA Licensing requirements.' It says Aberystwyth Town Football Club 'is often called 'home' by a number of other teams in the region which rely on the club's facilities and all-weather pitch for the provision of training sessions and matches'. The scheme itself is the first phase of development, the second relating to residential development. An officer for members at the August meeting said Natural Resources Wales had objected on flooding grounds, with a Flood Consequence Assessment submitted in support of the application 'which failed to demonstrate the potential risks and consequences of flooding were manageable,' NRW advising that further information from the applicant regarding flood risk be sought. Members heard the applicants, primarily due to costs for further modelling, wished the scheme to be judged on its current merits. The report said that, while the NRW views were acknowledged, planners felt the current scheme could be supported from a flooding perspective, concluding: 'The application represents an opportunity to improve facilities at the football ground to enable high level matches to be played in Aberystwyth to the benefit of not only the immediate community but on a county-wide basis also. 'Despite the objection from NRW on flooding grounds it is the opinion that the scheme can be supported.'

Aberystwyth Town FC launches sticker book after relegation

A recently relegated football club has launched its own sticker book as part of efforts to reconnect with fans and the local community. Aberystwyth Town Football Club ended a 33-year run in Welsh football's top tier last season following relegation from the Cymru Premier. The sticker book "is a way for fans to get to know the players and hopefully improve relations", said Tomos Roberts, the club's director and treasurer. Fans will be able to buy stickers of first team coaches and players, while there is also a special section to celebrate players from previous seasons. After last season's relegation, the club said it recognised the "devastation" caused to fans, saying they were doing everything possible to gain promotion at the first attempt. Mr Roberts said the book was a "unique little idea", and that the practice of collecting stickers used to be "iconic". "We want to bring back the tradition," he said. He added the team had changed significantly for the season ahead in JD Cymru Roberts said there "was no squad and no coach" at the beginning of May, and that "only four local guys have stayed with the squad from last year". They have signed 16 new players and made a good start to the season, winning both of their opening matches. "As there are so many new players, and as we have lost contact with the community - this sticker book is a way for the fans to get to know the players and improve relations," he said. Mr Roberts said the club had been unsure how people would respond but described the feedback as "fantastic". "Something like this has not been done for a while by a club," he said he hoped the situation at the club would improve, adding the council had granted permission for the current stadium to be developed. "We have sold around 30 books so far, and they will be available until the end of the month," he Roberts said if it is a success, the club will continue to publish the books next year and annually afterwards.

Aberdeen 0 Celtic 2 – Nygren & Hatate strike as Hoops exact cup final revenge to pile more misery on struggling Dons

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC cruised to Cup Final revenge with an effortless victory at Pittodrie. Goals from Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate saw them comfortably home 78 days after the heartbreak of the Hampden Cup Final. That would mean the Ibrox Old Firm meeting on August 31 would see Celtic firmly in control of their own destiny. It's early days to discuss title prospects, of course. But the manner in which Celtic made it two Premiership wins out of two and chalked up a second successive clean sheet indicates they're in their groove early. You could quibble that they started shakily as Aberdeen tried to rouse their support, or that Adam Idah continues to look a long way from the answer up front. But once Nygren had put them ahead and they got a grip of midfield, it was one-way traffic against a very limited Aberdeen side. Nygren scored 15 goals from midfield for Danes Nordsjaelland last season - as well as two for Sweden's national team - and there looks as though there could be more to come for him this season. A visit to Pittodrie is theoretically a difficult fixture for Celtic, but it isn't, really. The Dons' day of Cup Final glory already seems a distant memory. Aberdeen now haven't won any of the last 28 league meetings of the sides, a pitiful run that goes all the way back to Andy Considine's Celtic Park winner on the last day of the season in May 2018. I'm a Celtic-daft bride – I called off the big day but I still celebrated in my wedding dress at Parkhead This, unfortunately for their boisterous support, was more of the same. After a decent start, there was no zip or initiative about Aberdeen and they succumbed to the inevitable with little fuss or fight. A save from Adil Aouchiche first-half and a scrambled stop from Dante Polvara late on were the only times Kasper Schmeichel was called into serious action. Aberdeen now face a tricky Premier Sports Cup visit to Morton next weekend followed by a Europa League play-off first leg against either Romanian champions FCSB or Drita of Kosovo on August 21. Again, it's too early to seriously scrutinise their start to the season. But two games, two defeats and no goals scored are unlikely to be statistics to give the home fans any warm fuzzy feelings as they survey the months to come. Their boss Jimmy Thelin made two changes from the side beaten by Hearts on Monday, Nicky Devlin and Alfie Dorrington in for Leighton Clarkson and groin injury victim Mats Knoester. 34-year-old James Forrest for Yang Hyun-jun was Celtic's only change from the opening-day win over St Mirren. The home side started brightly. Alexander Jensen's fizzing cross was kneed out for a throw then Sunderland loanee Aouchiche's long-range drive was saved by Schemichel as the decibel level rose around Pittodrie. But Aberdeen failed to build on their lively and robust opening. Gradually Celtic began to dominate possession and there was a sense of inevitability about the opening goal after 26 minutes. And how Thelin would have been cursing the weaknesses that his side showed in both build-up and finish to it. First Kieran Tierney went past Nicolas Milanovic far too easily on the left, then when his cross came in, Nygren got in front of fellow Scandinavian Sivert Heltne Nilsen to turn the ball past the exposed Dimitar Mitov. The goal ruptured Aberdeen's confidence. Celtic were allowed to take a stranglehold on proceedings and did pretty much as they pleased for the remainder of a one-sided first-half. Aberdeen's cause wasn't helped when Devlin required a lengthy period of treatment just before the break after going down in the box, though he was eventually able to continue. The manner in which Aberdeen had drifted out of the game was encapsulated in the final minute of the first-half when Topi Keskinen nut-megged Nygren in midfield and sent the ball through for Kusini Yengi to pursue. However the Aussie frontman carelessly allowed the ball to slip under his foot and out for a goal-kick, to the frustration of the home support. Celtic, however, started the second-half exactly as they'd indeed the first - in control. Nygren and Forrest combined well in midfield and the winger's cross was met by Daizen Maeda, who forced Mitov into a smart save. However it was little surprise when Celtic extended their lead after 64 minutes. Callum McGregor and Forrest combined on the right and again the home defending was sluggish as the ball came in to Hatete, who curled an accurate right-footer high into Mitov's net from the edge of the box. That was the game pretty much over and a series of substitutions and bookings disrupted what little flow there had been to the game. However it did nothing to alter the fact that Celtic were in total control and showing no signs of relinquishing it. One of the replacements, Shin Yamada, had the chance to make Celtic's win more emphatic with a driving run down the left but his cross was weak and dealt with by the Dons back line. Celtic saw it out very straightforwardly against an Aberdeen side lacking in both inspiration and cutting-edge.
