Manel Kape breaks down UFC champ Alexandre Pantoja's flaws – to his face

USA Today03-03-2025
Manel Kape and flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja had a respectful exchange after UFC Fight Night 253.
Kape (21-7 MMA, 7-3 UFC) scored a TKO win over Asu Almabayev (21-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in this past Saturday's UFC Fight Night 253 main event to emerge as a title contender. 'Starboy' is 6-1 in his past seven fights.
Kape wants Pantoja (29-5 MMA, 13-3 UFC) next, and he got a chance to address the champion when Pantoja was called into the ESPN post-fight show. Pantoja, who spoiled Kape's UFC debut in February 2021, had nothing but praise for his former opponent.
'What a fight, Manel is so strong,' Pantoja said. 'Manel is a different level, this guy (Almabayev) is not on the same level as Manel. …I'm very happy to have Manel in my division, in the UFC, because the shows like that, I love to watch Manel fighting, he's so entertaining. He's so good, he has so many skills in striking, he has good takedown defense. Very good Manel, you deserve all the glory.'
'You can come for the title, but I'm here brother.'
Usually known for his trash talk on the mic, Kape reciprocated the respect towards Pantoja, but sent him a warning.
'I'm a big fan of Pantoja, the way he cares for his family just shows how good a man he is,' Kape responded. 'He's not just a fighter. I can see values and principles, and Pantoja is the guy who has these things.
'He's been working for his kids and his family. I don't have any bad energy, we are respectful, but when it comes to the title, I have to take that belt man. I want to feed my daughters as well so Pantoja, be ready.'
Kape was then asked to break down Pantoja's weaknesses.
'There is many things I can exploit in Pantoja's game,' Kape said. 'I just see that Pantoja walks forward too much, you know? And brother, I'm a sniper. So prepare for that. That hand is heavy. There is 14 knockouts here in MMA. It's not every weight that has that much knockouts as me; flyweight, welterweight, bantamweight. I have 14 knockouts so, be ready.'
When it was Pantoja's turn, he chose not to reveal too much, as the pair closed things out in cordial fashion.
'You're too cocky,' Pantoja laughed.

Where ESPN's 'College GameDay' will be in Week 0

The wait for the 2025 college football season is finally ending. The season begins with a Week 0 clash between No. 21 Iowa State and No. 20 Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland, at noon ET on Saturday, Aug. 23. Unlike last year, ESPN's beloved college football pregame show "College GameDay" will not be airing from Dublin, Ireland, in Week 0. Instead, ESPN is scheduled to have an episode of "SportsCenter" at 9 a.m. ET and then "College Football Countdown" at 10 a.m. ET. Fans wanting more college football coverage can also tune into a preseason edition of the "Herbie Awards" on ESPN2 at 9 a.m. ET. College football fans will have to wait until Week 1 for the return of GameDay, which will be hosting Lee Corso's final show during ahead of the No. 1 Texas Longhorns at No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes game on Saturday, Aug. 30. GameDay's 2025 season coverage will begin at 9 a.m. ET on Aug. 30 from Columbus, Ohio, on ESPN. Lee Corso, Nick Saban, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis, Desmond Howard and Pat McAfee all serve as analysts for GameDay. It is unclear why GameDay is not attending the Iowa State vs. Kansas State game, but we suspect it is to limit the amount of travel the hosts have to do over the course of the season. Flights to Dublin are over six and 1/2 hours from New York City and Dublin has a five hour time difference from the East Coast. College football's expanded playoff and schedule meant that GameDay hosted 22 different shows last year, which is far more than GameDay attended in previous years. Alexandr Romanov: 'It's bullsh*t' UFC cuts ranked heavyweights

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Alexandr Romanov hasn't always, but right now he feels appreciated. Two fights into his PFL tenure, Romanov (19-3) said he's mentally and physically in the best shape he's ever been. He attributes that, at least partially, toward what he feels is a clear promotional direction. "You know form my perspective, there's more opportunities here in PFL, I feel," Romanov told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Tuesday. "UFC never gave me enough fights. They don't keep (us) busy at heavyweight and I don't understand why. Usually, when I just started fighting professional MMA, I was very active. I was fighting four or five times a year. As soon as I signed the contract with the UFC, I started just fighting twice a year. It's a little bit holding you back. Because for a professional athlete, it's the most important moment to be active. You have to know and see the goal in front of you – what you're training for." PFL has breathed new life into Romanov's career after a somewhat unexpected UFC departure. Romanov competed 10 times in the UFC from 2020 to 2024 and went 7-3. When his second UFC contract ended, however, the promotion declined to re-sign him. This, despite Romanov winning his final UFC bout. "I didn't know what's going on now with these guys, what's in their heads. I think heavyweight is really what you can call a king division. If you cut guys who are on a winning streak, maybe something is wrong with them. I can't comment in this moment. But I think these guys who were cut after a win is a big mistake." "... I don't know if the respect the heavyweights or not. It's better to give this question to them, personally. I think to cut the guys on a win streak... sorry, it's bullsh*t." Romanov, 34, fights Oleg Popov (21-2) on Thursday at 2025 PFL World Tournament 10 in the promotion's heavyweight tournament final. Should he win, Romanov will move to 2-0 with one no contest in three appearances. "My hand will be raised up," Romanov said.

New TV deal for Southland

The Southland Conference will get more exposure in the coming years. On Wednesday, the league announced it signed a multi-year agreement with CBS Sports to televise future league events on linear television. Starting in the 2025-26 season, CBS Sports Network will televise up to five men's basketball games annually, adding to the deal the league recently renewed with ESPN earlier this month. It is a big win for the conference and its commissioner, Chris Grant, who continues to try to build the league's brand on the regional and national levels. 'Adding CBS Sports to our media rights lineup is another huge win for the Southland,' said Grant in a statement. 'This partnership amplifies our momentum, puts even more of our incredible student-athletes on national television, and shows that the Southland brand continues to surge forward. We're thrilled to bring our basketball programs to an even bigger audience.' Southland men's basketball has been on the rise the last two years, thanks in large part to the elevation of the McNeese basketball program, which won its first NCAA Tournament game last season. Under head coach Will Wade, the Cowboys became a national sensation last season when they upset Clemson in the tourney. They fell to Purdue in the second round. After winning the last two Southland titles, Wade moved on to North Carolina State, while the Cowboys named Bill Armstrong the new head coach. The new deal with CBS Sports makes the Southland a growing mid-major league in terms of national exposure, something Grant has been trying to accomplish. 'Visibility is currency in college athletics,' added Grant. 'With CBS Sports joining ESPN as a Southland media partner, we're not just showing up—we're standing out.' The new deal will be a boost to McNeese, which is likely going to get more exposure as well as the league's current top dog. 'I'm thrilled about this new TV contract,' said McNeese State head coach Heath Schroyer. 'Not only did we get a new and better deal with ESPN, but having five more basketball games on linear TV is a game changer for the Southland. 'This enhances our brand as a conference in a way nothing else can.' Schroyer gave credit to his commissioner. 'What Chris Grant has done for this league in a very short amount of time is simply amazing,' Schroyer said. 'The league is in a great place, and this new contract with CBS signifies that. I couldn't be happier or more excited.' Saturday, the conference will be on center stage when Incarnate Word travels to Nicholls to help open the new football season on one of the ESPN networks. 'That game is a great opportunity for our league to showcase some of the talent we have,' said Grant. Last year, McNeese opened the season on ESPN linear at Tarleton State during Week 0.
