Imphal: The Imphal Derby lived up to its billing as NEROCA FC snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against 10-man TRAU FC in their Group E opener of 134th Durand Cup, here at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium on Wednesday.
Khunjamayum Raj Singh's second-half goal gave TRAU the lead, but a stoppage-time equalizer by Arunkumar Singh, denied them all three points in a fiercely contested encounter.
TRAU head coach Thangjam Saran Singh opted for an all-Indian starting eleven with Nepolean Morangthem leading the line. On the other hand, NEROCA head coach Gyan Moyon named a strong lineup which included three foreigners — Jackson Emmanuel Gomado, Mark Harrison Junior, and Ekomobong Victor Philip.
The match kicked off with NEROCA pressing high and dictating tempo early on. Their first real chance came in the opening minutes when skipper Angom Kinesh Singh's shot was blocked by TRAU defender Rakesh, and Mark Harrison fired the rebound wide.
However, tactical discipline from both teams made for a gritty and physical first half, which ended goalless despite the intensity on display. The second half began with the same ferocity but it was TRAU who finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute.

New Delhi [India], August 16 (ANI): Tushar Raheja, a young left-handed wicketkeeper batter who is slowly building a reputation of being a bowler's nightmare in the T20 format, revealed that legendary former India and Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni is the player he has always idolised. In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), Tushar has been dominating the spin duo of Varun Chakravarrthy and Ravichandran 24-year-old commanding a wide range of shots has earned the sobriquet 'Rocket Raheja' in the TNPL circuitApart from his proficiency against pace, Tushar has disrupted the rhythm of Varun and Ashwin during Tiruppur Tamizhans' run to their maiden title. His captain, Sai Kishore, was in awe of Tushar's approach to takedown spin that he came out publicly and declared that the young wicketkeeper was ready for the Indian Premier League (IPL). Amis his steady rise, Tushar revealed that Dhoni continues to inspire him.'I was always a fan of Dhoni. When Matthew Hayden used to play for CSK, I used to go to Chepauk to watch a lot of matches. So, I was fascinated by the way he took down fast bowlers. I was also fascinated by Yuvraj Singh, but I've always idolised Dhoni mainly," Raheja told ESPNcricinfo. Tushar attended multiple trials leading upto the 18th season of the cash-rich IPL but was unable to catch the attention of made it to the auction after topping the TNPL run-scoring chart by garnering 488 runs in nine innings at 61 with an impressive strike rate of 185.55 including a 77-run knock in the final against Ashwin's Dindigul Dragons.'I thought I did well at the Delhi trials, and then I was called again during the tournament as well. After the auction, I tried to compare myself to them in terms of seeing what they are doing right and what I'm not," he said. Not Virat Kohli & Sourav Ganguly! These 5 Indians Have Won Asia Cup As Captain
1/5 Sunil Gavaskar etched his name in history by captaining India to victory in the inaugural Asia Cup held in Sharjah in 1984, where India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan and laid the foundation for their regional dominance, marking the beginning of a glorious chapter in continental cricket supremacy. In 1988, India once again proved their supremacy in Asian cricket when Dilip Vengsarkar led the team to the title, continuing the momentum from the inaugural win and stamping India's authority over its continental rivals, thereby reinforcing the team's growing reputation as the powerhouse of subcontinental cricket. 3/5 Mohammad Azharuddin became the first Indian captain to lift the Asia Cup twice, guiding the team to victories in 1991 and 1995, both times overcoming Sri Lanka in decisive clashes, and cementing India's position as the most successful side in the competition's early years with back-to-back dominant campaigns. After a gap of 15 years, MS Dhoni restored India's Asia Cup glory in 2010 by defeating Sri Lanka, and then again in 2016, when the tournament switched to the T20 format, showing his adaptability as a leader while reaffirming India's dominance in both ODI and T20 cricket. Rohit Sharma stepped in as captain in 2018 and delivered immediate success by leading India to another Asia Cup triumph, showcasing his leadership qualities in the absence of Virat Kohli, while displaying calmness and tactical sharpness, which eventually strengthened his credentials as one of India's most successful leaders.
