Tedros: Israeli army stormed WHO warehouses in Gaza Strip
Tedros said in a statement that a WHO's staff residence in Deir al-Balah, in the centre of the Gaza Strip, "was attacked three times today as well as its main warehouse."
"Israeli military entered the premises, forcing women and children to evacuate on foot toward Al-Mawasi amid active conflict," the statement said.
"Male staff and family members were handcuffed, stripped, interrogated on the spot and screened at gunpoint. Two WHO staff and two family members were detained. Three were later released, while one staff remains in detention."
The organization is calling on the staffer's release.
Tedros said that the WHO's main warehouse for the Gaza Strip, which is located in Deir al-Balah, was also damaged on Sunday "when an attack caused explosions and a fire inside."
"With the main warehouse nonfunctional and the majority of medical supplies in Gaza depleted," he said.
"As the lead agency for health, compromising WHO's operations is crippling the entire health response in Gaza," Tedros said. "A ceasefire is not just necessary, it is overdue."
Israel's army did not initially comment on the incidents.
The military moved into the south-west of Deir al-Balah on Monday morning to fight Palestinian militant organization Hamas there. It had previously called on thousands of Palestinians to leave the affected neighbourhoods in the direction of Al-Mawasi.
Israel had previously refrained from military action in Deir al-Balah because hostages abducted by Hamas were suspected to be there.
Al-Mawasi in the south-west of the embattled area was designated by Israel as a "humanitarian zone" earlier in the war. However, the Israeli military has since also attacked there multiple times.

A Palestinian American died in the Israeli-occupied West Bank last week after a confrontation with settlers, U.S. officials confirmed. Khamis Ayyad, who was in his 40s, died Thursday from smoke inhalation in Silwad, a village in the central West Bank near several Israeli settlements, a U.S. official told CBS News. The Palestinian health ministry said on Friday that the fires were set by settlers on homes and vehicles in Silwad, according to the Agence France-Presse. A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed to CBS News the death on Sunday and condemned what they called "criminal violence by any party." Ayyad was laid to rest on Friday. The Palestinian Authority, which administers part of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, told AFP that some villages around Silwad also came under attack by settlers, in which vehicles, homes and farmlands were set ablaze. Witnesses said Israeli forces fired live rounds and tear gas toward residents after the settlers attacked. Israel's military said police were investigating the incident. They said security forces found Hebrew graffiti and a burnt vehicle at the scene but had not detained any suspects. Ayyad is the latest Palestinian American to die in the West Bank in three weeks. Saifullah Kamel Musallet, a 20-year-old man from Tampa, was beaten to death by settlers while visiting family in the West Bank in July. He was killed in a confrontation with settlers while protecting his family's land in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, according to his family and the Palestinian Health Ministry. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who visited Gaza last week with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, has asked Israel to "aggressively investigate the murder" of Musallet, saying in a social media post that "there must be accountability for this criminal and terrorist act." There has been a rise in settler attacks on Palestinians, as well as Palestinian militant attacks on Israelis and large-scale Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank since Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel out of Gaza that triggered the Israel-Hamas war. Desperation has gripped the Palestinian territory of more than 2 million, which experts have warned is facing famine because of Israel's blockade and nearly two-year Brennan contributed to this report.

Kurdish-led SDF say five members killed during attack by Islamic State in Syria
CAIRO (Reuters) -The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said on Sunday that five of its members had been killed during an attack by Islamic State militants on a checkpoint in eastern Syria's Deir el-Zor on July 31. The SDF was the main fighting force allied to the United States in Syria during fighting that defeated Islamic State in 2019 after the group declared a caliphate across swathes of Syria and Iraq. The Islamic State has been trying to stage a comeback in the Middle East, the West and Asia. Deir el-Zor city was captured by Islamic State in 2014, but the Syrian army retook it in 2017.
