Don Cowie insists he shares Ross County fans' frustration – but vowed to help turn their early season slump around. The Staggies manager has seen his side bow out of the Premier Sports Cup group stages, draw 2-2 at Airdrieonians after leading 2-0 and lose 1-0 late on against expected title rivals St Johnstone. On Saturday, they host Partick Thistle in the Championship – just four weeks after the Jags won 3-1 in Dingwall in the League Cup. Mark Wilson's team have also just one point from their first two league games – but their flawless form in the cup has taken them into a quarter-final showdown against holders Celtic next month. Cowie and his players have been under fire from sections of the support due to poor performances and results, and he knows it. Cowie said: 'I share the same frustration, and the players share it as well. 'The frustration is valid, especially for the fans. Like I say, each signing that has come in, it's been like 'that's a good signing'. 'That's what we feel as a football club. We're really happy with what we've taken in. 'But now ultimately it is down to the players. We've all set out our stall, between me, the board and the players, what our goals are going into this season. 'Now it is a case of 'go and show it'. 'There's no reason to panic this early in the season, but we've still got to recognise in the games we've played that we should have performed better. 'Yes, it is only two games in, but we should demand more, expect more. 'What I want to see now on Saturday is a team that comes out of the traps flying. 'To go and show what they're capable of and give the fans that positivity in terms of what they're seeing on the pitch.' Amid the 13 arrivals at County this summer have been defenders Declan Gallagher and Alex Iacovitti, wingers Adam Emslie and Gary Mackay-Steven, midfielders Jamie Lindsay and Ross Docherty and forward Nicky Clark. The Staggies head coach stressed that there was a collective agreement that the standard of player arriving at County over the summer brought a sense of excitement. He said: 'We have all spoken about our recruitment – everyone outside and inside the club have been really happy with the individuals who have come in. 'We knew there was always a possibility it could take a bit of time for them to gel and perform collectively as a team. 'The players recognise they need to perform better individually and, if they do that, then we'd be in a better place. 'We will have had two weeks since our last game and there needs to be a real determination to take the game to Partick.' Cowie also addressed the question over whether a regular squad overhaul at the Dingwall club is a challenge. He added: 'It's part of football. 'It's not something we've not gone through before. 'You have got to adapt and it's no excuse. 'Previously, we've had a lot of loan or younger players come in and they're having to adapt. 'We've signed a lot of seasoned pros with a lot of experience in the game. 'They recognise they need to perform a lot better than they have.' *** County's bid, meanwhile, to bring Dundee goalkeeper Trevor Carson to the club on loan has reportedly ended with the 37-year-old opting to remain at Dens Park. The former Hartlepool, Motherwell, Dundee United and St Mirren keeper was wanted as competition for Ross Laidlaw and Brad Foster and the clubs had agreed on the move until January. However, Carson has turned down the switch, preferring to fight for the number one spot with Jon McCracken, who is Steven Pressley's current top pick for the Dark Blues.

Ross County's Arron Lyall spells out risks of complacency as Staggies set their sights on Premiership return
Arron Lyall insists any hint of Ross County slackness will be punished as the Staggies set out to seal the club's immediate return to the Premiership. The attacking midfielder is one of 11 new arrivals at the Dingwall club and he's relishing this fresh challenge. The 21-year-old, who had a four-month loan stint at Inverness in 2021 when he was coming through the ranks at Rangers, is delighted to have made the Highlands his base for at least two years. On Saturday afternoon, County will host Championship rivals Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup, needing three points to get through as Group B winners and into the second round. They trail Thistle by two points, therefore only a victory will be enough to knock their opponents off top spot. A stunning 8-0 demolition of League Two Edinburgh City on Tuesday kept County in contention. Once the dust settles on this final tie, the attention will switch to their pursuit of the title. Lyall stressed there's no room for complacency – despite the high expectations nationally. He said: 'When you come down from the top-flight, a lot of teams are expected to go straight back up. 'However, the Championship is a very hard league. I played a lot of games in it over the past two seasons, it is tough. 'We'd like to think we're going to win the league, but we must not expect to win it. We must be focused for every single game. 'If we play to the best of our ability, then we've a really good chance, but any slackness and you will be punished. There are a lot of good teams and good players in the Championship. 'If you're not at the top of your game every game, then you can be punished.' Lyall had a ball in his year at Morton, impressing Ton boss Dougie Imrie having been on loan at Airdrieonians from Rangers from January to May 2024. He made 42 appearances for the Cappielow side and walked off with the club's young player of the year prize. That form was noticed by County manager Don Cowie, who secured his services on a two-year contract on June 21. Lyall was impressed by Cowie's early bid to sign him as he spelled out the target of getting back to the top-flight in one shot. He explained: 'I loved my time at Morton. It was great. 'I have such respect for Dougie Imrie, who was brilliant with me last year. 'The gaffer here phoned me quite early in the summer and made it clear a few times what his plans were for this season. 'He didn't mess around and told me what he wanted, and this move was a no-brainer for me.' Ronan Hale's first competitive hat-trick for County, a Jay Henderson double, a strike from Kieran Phillips and a brace from 16-year-old substitute Joe Coyle buried visitors Edinburgh City in midweek. County now know a victory against Thistle on Saturday will put them into the second round of the Premier Sports Cup. That rout came on the back of a 1-0 win at Queen of the South and Lyall explained they've been improving game by game since slipping up away to League Two Stranraer in their first tie in their section. He said: 'It was good to put on such a good performance on Tuesday, especially in our first home game. 'The Stranraer game especially wasn't great when we drew the game after being 1-0 up and then we lost on penalties. 'We expect better from ourselves, even if it is to grind out a 1-0 win. In the Championship, we might need to do that a few times. 'But Tuesday was more of a show from us. To score eight goals was brilliant. 'I was buzzing for young Joe Coyle to get two and for Ronan Hale to get his first hat-trick in Scotland.'

Newport County boss David Hughes is 'really positive'
County lost the game 1-0 - their third defeat on the bounce after last week's Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Millwall and the last-gasp loss at Grimsby Town - but Hughes is remaining upbeat as he plans for Saturday's home clash with MK Dons. "I don't think there's too much to be downbeat about, apart from the outcome of the game - which is ultimately what the game is about," said the Exiles boss. "It sounds daft, but the performance was really positive. On the back of late last-minute disappointment on Saturday, that definitely wasn't carried over into the performance. "Their keeper made some outstanding saves and I thought the progress was really positive. "We want to win, of course, but there were a number of characteristics in the performance that were really positive. We challenged the players to be better on the ball and that was certainly evident. "We got caught on a set-play, which is a really important part of the game, so we're really disappointed with a defeat when we felt we definitely deserved a point - minimum." (Image: Chris Fairweather/Huw Evans Agency) County were unable to find a way back into the match after Adebola Owulo's sublime volleyed winner six minutes into the second half, although Salford stopper Matty Young did save superbly from Michael Reindorf and Matt Smith (above) either side of the goal. "The hardest thing in football is generally putting the ball in the net, but there was many parts of the performance to be positive about," added Hughes. "I'm frustrated with the result, but I'm definitely not frustrated with the players. I don't think we were inferior, I think we were on a par. "If we can deliver that level of performance consistently for a period of time, we're going to win more than we lose." Hughes confirmed that he is still looking to add to his squad before the transfer window shuts on September 1, while also giving injury updates on Kai Whitmore, Liam Shephard and Ged Garner. "Kai has had a little setback, a niggle with a calf that will put him out for three or four weeks, which is a disappointment because he was performing really well," he explained. "Because the squad is tight we've got to be conscious of trying to gauge fatigue levels and the risk of injury and Sheppy had had a couple of significant injuries and we just need to make sure we keep him fit and keep him on the grass. "Over time we want him available for Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday, but we cannot break him on week two. "Ged just had a little niggle with his knee, He was back in training on Tuesday so he will be with us possibly for Saturday, we're really hopeful of that. It just adds to the competition for places."
