Mali's former prime minister Maiga taken into custody amid corruption probe
Maiga's lawyer, Cheick Oumar Konaré, told The Associated Press the former prime minister was taken in for questioning earlier this month by the National Economic and Financial Unit, which is responsible for fighting corruption, as part of an investigation into allegations of misuse of public property.
'Former Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga has been taken into custody by officers from the brigade of the National Economic and Financial Unit,' Konaré said.
'We are contesting his detention because the former prime minister has no intention of fleeing the country or destroying evidence,' he added.
In November 2024, Maïga was dismissed from his role as prime minister, days after he criticized the military regime for postponing elections. Following his dismissal, Maiga continued to criticize the military regime in the media.
Earlier this month, another former prime minister, Moussa Mara, was imprisoned after tweeting his support for jailed critics of the ruling military junta.
Mali has been ruled by military leaders since a junta seized power in 2020 and staged another coup the following year.
In June, the country's leader, Gen. Assimi Goita, was granted an additional five years in power, despite the junta's earlier promises of a return to civilian rule by March 2024. The move followed the military regime's dissolution of political parties in May.

A 38-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with raping a 17-year-old boy after "approaching him on a bench" in a popular UK seaside town. "The victim will continue to be supported throughout this process, and following their bravery in making a report, officers quickly identified a person of interest, and they have since been charged and remanded. "Officers have continued to carry out enquiries in the Regent Hill area, and as a result, a heightened police presence has been visible. "This forms part of our ongoing work to support the investigation and to provide reassurance to the community. "We remain committed to protecting the public from those who seek to harm others. Mike Ashley demands investigation into Boohoo founder's debt collecting
Mike Ashley has demanded an independent investigation into attempts by Boohoo's founder to collect a £100,000 personal debt by taking a cut of payments from one of its suppliers. In a letter to Tim Morris, Boohoo's independent chairman, lawyers for Mr Ashley's Frasers Group said its founder and executive vice chairman Mahmud Kamani must be suspended 'immediately' pending the outcome of an investigation. Lawyers at White and Case said they had sent the letter, which was also published on the London Stock Exchange, directly to Mr Morris 'due to the seriousness of the issues raised with regards to the conduct' of Mr Kamani. The demand comes after The Telegraph last week revealed Mr Kamani's debt collection demands with one supplier, publishing angry WhatsApp messages sent by the retail tycoon. Frasers Group, which owns Sports Direct and House of Fraser, is Boohoo's biggest shareholder in Boohoo with a 30pc stake. Lawyers for Frasers said they were seeking 'urgent reassurance' that the revelations would be 'properly and independently investigated'. The letter said: 'Frasers also considers that it is your responsibility, as well as that of the entire board of directors of Boohoo, to protect Boohoo and its shareholders from Mr Kamani and any of his associates who may be complicit in these matters. 'These allegations are very serious and damaging to the reputation of boohoo. If proven, it appears that Mr Kamani may have breached his duties as a director of Boohoo and could also have committed various criminal offences.' In the messages, Mr Kamani, who retains a 12.5pc stake in Boohoo, claimed he was owed £100,000 by Anjum Majid, the father of the owner of PDQ Textiles. He instructed a middleman in its supply chain to deduct 20p per garment from payments to PDQ Textiles, a Manchester company with factories in Pakistan, in order to collect the personal debt. In the WhatsApp conversation from 2023, Mr Kamani said: 'I want my £100k... please deduct 20p per garment from all his son's orders... with immediate effect all deliveries from today.'

Police conclude investigation into death of Gogglebox's George Gilbey
Police have concluded their investigation into the death of Gogglebox's George Gilbey, with two men who were arrested facing no further police action. The 40-year-old had been 'working on a roof when he fell through a plastic skylight, landing on the ground below' in Shoeburyness in Essex last year, a previous inquest hearing was told. Mr Gilbey, of Clacton-on-Sea, suffered traumatic injuries to his head and torso, and died on March 27 last year. Essex Police said on Wednesday that two men, who were arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, will face no further action from the force. In a statement the force said: 'Essex Police have confirmed their investigation into the death of George Gilbey last year has concluded. 'Two men who were arrested and released under investigation in connection with the incident in Shoebury on March 27, 2024 will face no further action from Essex Police. 'The thoughts of everyone at Essex Police remain with George's family and friends. 'The criminal investigation remains open and will be led by the Health and Safety Executive.' HSE inspector Natalie Prince said: 'We have been a part of this inquiry from the outset and we will continue to thoroughly investigate George's tragic death as the lead agency. 'This will aim to establish if there have been any breaches of health and safety law. 'We are in regular contact with George's family and our thoughts remain with them at this time.' Mr Gilbey was best known for appearing on the Channel 4 series Gogglebox – where participants watch and comment on TV shows from the previous week.
