Nashik civic body to conduct structural audits of all bridges after Pune collapse

Time of India5 hours ago

Nashik: Following a recent fatal bridge collapse in Pune district, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has expanded its plans to conduct structural audits of all 48 bridges within the city limits.
This decision comes as a critical measure to ensure public safety, especially with the Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled to take place in Nashik between 2026 and 2028.
Initially, the civic body had planned to audit 12 bridges in preparation for the Kumbh Mela. However, the tragic incident involving a bridge on the Indrayani river in Pune district, which claimed four lives, prompted a more comprehensive approach.
Nashik boasts of 48 bridges on Godavari river and its three tributaries — Nasardi, Waldevi, and Waghadi.
Seven of these bridges were constructed for the last Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2015.
An NMC official confirmed that these widespread structural audits will be carried out to prevent any unfortunate incidents, particularly during the anticipated high footfall of the upcoming Kumbh Mela. The civic body intends to strengthen any structures identified as needing work based on the findings of these audit reports.
"Earlier, the structural audits of some bridges were carried out by the smart city corporation.

However, the structural audit of all the bridges is now to be carried out in view of the upcoming Kumbh Mela," the official said.
Two years ago, the NMC conducted a structural audit of the century-old Ahilyabai Holkar bridge and some other bridges. These bridges were found structurally fit during the audits. Ahilyabai Holkar bridge was built in 1895 on Godavari river.
Gadge Maharaj and Ram Setu bridges are over six decades old.
The latter was built in 1955, while the former was built in 1956. Both bridges connect the old Panchavati and old Raviwar Peth areas of the city. There is a huge movement of pedestrians through these bridges on a daily basis. The structural audits of both bridges were done by the smart city corporation around two to three years ago.
The NMC is also constructing nine new bridges on the Godavari river and its three tributaries in view of the upcoming Kumbh Mela. The tender process for this has already been started by the civic administration.
Around 5 crore people are expected to visit Nashik during Kumbh Mela.

Oppn blames govt for 11-month delay in building new Kund Mala bridge after nod to Rs 8cr plan

1 2 3 Pune: The collapse of a footbridge on Indrayani River in Kund Mala on Sunday has become the latest example of govt apathy towards expediting infrastructural work. Documents from Public Works Department (PWD) revealed that the state govt sanctioned Rs 8 crore for the construction of a new parallel bridge at the same spot on July 11 last year. The final work order for the construction was issued on June 10, 2025, just five days before the tragedy. Four lives were lost and 54 others were injured, some of them are critical. Officials said the new structure would have eased stress on the old bridge. The bridge was constructed three decades ago and maintained by Pune zilla parishad. It links Shelarwadi near Bhegdewadi close to Pune-Mumbai highway to Kanhewadi near Indori in Maval tehsil of Pune district and was notified as dangerous and shut. It collapsed after some tourists ignored the warning and stood on the bridge. The footbridge with a concrete safety rail for some part and an iron guard rail over the rest was five feet wide and served as the only crossing between the villages. "It hasn't seen proper maintenance in years, and with a growing tourist footfall — including people riding two-wheelers on it — the structure was under severe strain," a PWD official told TOI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The new bridge, 175m long and 7.5m wide, was approved based on strong local demand to improve regional connectivity and address rising tourist traffic. It was green-lit under the first tenure of the Mahayuti govt and then PWD minister Ravindra Chavan sanctioned Rs 8 crore through supplementary budgetary provisions for 2024-25. PWD officials said there was no delay. "The process from sanction to execution is systematic and involves multiple stages. Design approvals, technical inputs, and the tendering process take time," they added. Another PWD official said, "Though funds were allocated last year, we had to incorporate suggestions from local villagers. The design approval took time as the area has a specific stone and aesthetic elements which added to the longer timeline." The opposition has blamed govt for the 11-month delay in constructing the new bridge. Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut said, "When funds were sanctioned for the bridge last year, where did that money go? When it comes to projects of public interest, Mahayuti always drags its feet." NCP (SP) Pune city president Prashant Jagtap said, "Since the tender was not awarded to a particular contractor of Mahayuti politicians' choice, it has been delayed. I will soon bring these facts out in the open." MNS chief Raj Thackeray said govt has failed to take measures to averts such tragedies. "If the bridge was so dangerous, why was no step taken to prevent its use? Instead, it gives a stock reply. What are govt departments doing?" Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "The contract was awarded on June 10 this year, therefore, the construction was not going to be completed when the tragedy happened. We are not bothered about such allegations as they do not hold any water."

TN's Rooftop Gardening Scheme Withers Away

Tamil Nadu's once-popular rooftop garden scheme, which greened up several city household terraces with fruits and vegetables, has now withered. The 'Do It Yourself' scheme, launched by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in 2013, offered vegetable and fruit seedling kits at 900. Besides seeds, each of these kits included tools such as hand trowels, digging forks, fertilizers, and an operational manual. Officials also came home to teach residents how to grow the garden. They followed up every month, also provided fresh kits at periodic intervals. Each person could book two kits at once. The scheme became so popular in the city that Jayalalithaa expanded it to other districts in 2016. While it witnessed around 1,000 bookings in that period, the scheme now remains only on paper, with the city getting fewer than 100 bookings a week. The 'E-Thottam' app, meant to sell the kits, has disappeared from both iOS and Android stores. The kits were also meant to be sold through horticulture department's website, but when TOI booked the kits using OTP, it only led to contacts of retired officials who were not associated with the department. A follow-up with these retired officials led to officials posted in the five horticulture depots in the city in Madhavaram, Perambur, Anna Nagar, Semmozhi Poonga, and Thiruvanmiyur, where the kits are to be sold. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo However, when TOI reached the depots in Anna Nagar and Semmozhi Poonga, they were shut. The one in Thiruvanmiyur had no stock, making the entire kit-buying process a hassle for residents. Prabhakaran, deputy horticulture officer for Anna Nagar depot, now posted in Semmozhi Poonga, said the scheme got no funding. "The Siddha College in Anna Nagar increased their land rent. So, we shut down. We are also not getting seedling stock. There are more private nurseries, and people prefer them," he said. The depot in the botanical garden was shut too. The govt slashed the price of the kits to 450 five years ago, and yet there were no takers. The govt too has shown no interest in renewing the 'do it yourself' scheme. The scheme did not find a mention in the policy notes of 2024 and 2025. While lack of awareness and bureaucratic negligence in updating the tech to push the scheme is a major reason, residents blamed lack of accessibility and poor quality of the kits. K Shanthakumar, a terrace-garden enthusiast, said with just five depots, it's a hassle for people from extreme corners of the city to buy the kit. "Nurseries are there in every neighbourhood now. They should update the scheme with localised sales options," he said. Agriculture department secretary V Dakshinamurthy said the scheme is not defunct. "Every year, we allocate funds after the budget is finalised, usually in July. We will look into why depots are shut and will revive them," he told TOI. Hafiz Khan, an urban forest creator, said terrace gardening must be promoted in govt buildings and big space infrastructures. "It's a challenge to find land to grow gardens. Hence, terrace gardening must be promoted. It helps in cooling buildings too," he said.

AI 171 Plane crash victim's grieving sister dies of heart attack

Ahmedabad: The AI 171 plane crash claimed the lives of two members of the Parmar family – Bhogilal, 57, and his wife Hansa, 55, natives of Rakhiyana near Mandal in Ahmedabad district – on Thursday. But even before the family could recover from the blow, they received another: Bhogilal's elder sister, Gomti Parmar, unable to process the grief, collapsed and died. Bhogilal and his wife Hansa were among the passengers on board the ill-fated Air India flight when it crashed near B J Medical College on June 12. The couple, on their first-ever trip abroad, had been invited by their son and daughter-in-law in the UK, who are expecting their first child this week. Her son, Sagar, who lives in Vaghala near Patdi in Surendranagar, said she collapsed during the gathering and died on the spot. "She was very close to my mama (uncle)," he said. "When she heard about the crash and realized there were almost no survivors, her heart just gave out." Gomti's final rites were performed on Friday — ironically, before those of her younger brother, whose mortal remains are still being identified. While Hansa's body has been identified, DNA reports for Bhogilal are still awaited. Sagar said his cousin Pinki, Bhogilal's daughter, gave a sample for DNA matching."Their last rites will take place once both the bodies are handed over to the family," said Sagar. "It's all too much for us. My mother and uncle were emotionally very close since childhood. She couldn't bear the grief," Sagar said. "We were all excited for the baby. Now we don't know how to console each other." The family had hoped this week would be a time of celebration and joy. Instead, they find themselves reeling from loss after loss; mourning not just those who died in the crash, but also a woman who died from the weight of the sorrow.
