Planning for new ghats along Godavari in final stage, says divisional commissioner

Nashik: Planning for additional bathing ghats in Trimbakeshwar and Nashik city, as part of the preparation for the upcoming Kumbh Mela is in the final stage, said the civic authorities. They said the work is set to commence after the rainy season with a strong focus on crowd management, river cleanliness, and infrastructure readiness. Arrangements are being made to ensure the Godavari river has water flowing Gedam, the Nashik divisional commissioner who heads the Kumbh Mela Authority established by state govt, said, "The work on the finalisation of the location of the ghats and their planning is almost done. This exercise is being carried out to diversify the large number of people who come during the Amrut Snan at both Nashik and Trimbakeshwar to take a dip in the Godavari. This will not only help in crowd management during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which occurs during the rainy season, but will also help people bathe peacefully." Gedam added that the major works requiring more time have been prioritised, with less time-consuming projects scheduled to begin later. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fully Loaded 4 BHK apts for 4.49 Cr(All Incl)* in Sec 104 ATS Triumph, Gurgaon Book Now Undo "We have less time in hand now. However, the projects that require a longer duration have already started, and the others will begin by Jan," he said. A significant issue facing the Godavari is the mixing of untreated sewage with river water, along with seasonal water scarcity. "Regarding the work on sewage treatment plants, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has already started taking steps for the Rs 1600 crore project. The other measure being carried out is for the continuous flow of water. This is being done by pumping in water from smaller adjoining dams in Trimbakeshwar taluka into the Godavari. The flow will be limited only for the special days across the year," Gedam said. He also said the Railways is undertaking major augmentation of Nashik Road railway station along with Devlali, Odha, Kasbe-Sukene, and Kherwadi railway stations, which would be assigned to handle passengers coming by trains from specific regions. Gedam said while there would be no compromise on security arrangements, measures would be taken to ensure pilgrims did not face hardships as experienced during the Amrit Snan in the Kumbh Mela 2014-15. "We will have an incident-free Kumbh Mela at Nashik, for which precautions are being taken by all the govt departments concerned," he said.

Investigation into Gangapur dam water pipeline will reveal truth, says MLA Dhikale

Nashik: An investigation ordered by Madhuri Misal, the minister of state for urban development, into the controversial Rs 175-crore direct water supply pipeline from the Gangapur dam to Nashik will reveal the truth and be in the interest of the taxpayers of Nashik city," said Rahul Dhikale, the Nashik East MLA. The work on laying the direct water pipeline from the Gangapur dam to Nashik city is currently underway because the old pipeline, laid about 25 years ago, has been experiencing frequent breakdowns and repairs. Divisional commissioner Praveen Gedam was directed to conduct the inquiry. Dhikale objected to the work procedure followed by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the contractor in the construction of the pipeline, claiming they did not adhere to the guidelines of the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran and the terms and conditions outlined by the NMC in the tender awarded to the contractor. "It is unbelievable that NMC made the payment of Rs 75 crore to the contractor in the beginning when the Rs 175crore work had only commenced and was yet to gather pace," claimed Dhikale, adding that there were other issues as well. "The contract, as per the guidelines of the MJP, was for laying six metres of pipes each, but the contractor used 12-metre pipes in the work. The contractor neither consulted the MJP nor the NMC regarding this matter. If it saves on the cost of the works, then that benefit should be transferred to the civic body directly," said the MLA. He further alleged that the raw materials used for construction were not sourced from the recommended companies and were instead sourced from companies based outside a 200km radius of the city, one of the contract's norms. This was the reason Dhikale raised the objection in the House, following which the minister of state ordered the inquiry.

Nashik civic body begins tender process for Rs440-crore water projects for Kumbh

Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has started the tender process for a Rs440-crore water project, a crucial step in preparing for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, set to take place between 2026 and 2028. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This project aims to secure an additional 250 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of water, addressing the anticipated surge in demand during the massive religious congregation. The comprehensive project includes several key developments. It will involve increasing the capacity of the pumping station at the Mukane dam, an important water source for the city. Furthermore, a brand new water treatment plant (WTP) will be constructed at Vilholi, officials said. In order to ensure efficient distribution, new water pipelines will be laid, connecting the Vilholi WTP to Sadhugram and extending to the Nilgiri Water Treatment Plant in the Panchavati areas of Nashik. Currently, Nashik's daily water requirement is over 550 MLD. However, with the Simhastha Kumbh Mela approaching, this demand is projected to increase by an additional 240 MLD. While Nashik draws water from both the Gangapur and Mukane dams, NMC officials highlight significant untapped potential at the Mukane dam. "The water lifting capacity from our jackwell in Mukane dam is 411 MLD, but presently we are lifting only 137 MLD of water," an NMC official said. "We can lift 274 MLD more, but we need to develop water infrastructure for this first," the official added. The NMC has decided to build a new water pumping station at Mukane dam with a capacity of 274 MLD and a new water treatment plant near Vilholi on the outskirts of the city with the same capacity of 274 MLD. "The city will get an additional 274 MLD of water from Mukane dam, and total lifting from the dam will increase from the present 137 MLD to 411 MLD," the official said.

NMC gets ready to outsource 160 workers

Nashik: The standing committee of Nashik Municipal Corporation has approved deployment of two agencies to provide 160 personnel to its encroachment department. This move, which has been finalized through a tender process, is a proactive measure in anticipation of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled for 2026-2028. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These agencies will play a crucial role in assisting the civic body with regular drives against roadside encroachments across the city for the next three years. Beyond providing manpower, the selected agencies will also supply all necessary equipment, including hammers, cutters, and other tools required for demolition work. This initiative is particularly significant as the civic body has been facing a manpower crunch. Addition of these 160 personnel will enable consistent and effective enforcement against encroachments. Following the standing committee's approval, the NMC will finalize agreements with both agencies in the coming days. "The total cost for these services over the next three years is Rs18 crore," an NMC official said. Around 50 of the total 160 personnel will be stationed in the Panchavati division for removing encroachments along Kalaram Temple, Ramkund, Shahi Marg — the route through which sadhus take out a procession from Tapovan to Ramkund during the Simhastha — and the proposed Ram Kal Path route. The remaining personnel will be deployed to remove encroachments in all the major market areas of the city in Nashik East, Nashik West, Nashik Road, Satpur and Ambad division. Continuous drives against roadside encroachments in market areas like Raviwar Karanja, Shalimar, Saraf Bazaar, M G Road and Main Road will also be undertaken regularly with the help of these staff.

NMC to spend Rs 90cr to develop water infra in new developing areas

Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to invest Rs 90 crore in laying 100km of water distribution pipelines in developing areas on the city's outskirts, enhancing water infrastructure. The civic body has already finalised the agency through the tender process, and awarded the work order recently. "The work for laying water pipelines in the developing residential areas, including Makhmalabad, Mhasrul, Adgaon, New Indira Nagar and Pathardi, is expected to begin after the monsoon season," an NMC official. Civic officials said the work would be carried out under the Centre's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. NMC would get 50% of the total funds from govt under the Amrut scheme, while the rest would be borne by the civic body. The officials said they were supplying water to the residents across six divisions of the municipal corporation. "The water is sourced from Gangapur, Mukane and Darna dams. The Gangapur dam meets 80% of the water requirement of the city, while the remaining 20% is sourced from Mukane and Darna dams," another official said. In 2013, the population of Nashik city was around 16 lakh and the daily water supply was 380 million litres per day (MLD). "Today, the population has increased to 23 lakh and the daily water supply has gone up to 560 MLD. Hence, NMC is developing the water infrastructure across the city as per the development of the new residential areas in the city," the official added.
