The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed another section of underground tunnelling on the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor under Phase 4 of the metro network expansion. A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) achieved a breakthrough at the Tughlakabad Railway Colony site after completing a 792-metre-long tunnel. The milestone was marked in the presence of Naveen Gulati, Member (Infrastructure), Railway Board, along with senior officials of DMRC. The work was carried out by civil contractor Afcons Infrastructure Ltd Two parallel tunnels are being constructed between Tughlakabad and Tughlakabad Railway Colony stations for up and down train movement. The latest tunnel was constructed at an average depth of 18 metres using a 91-metre-long TBM. A total of 559 concrete rings have been installed, each with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres. The tunnel was built using Earth Pressure Balancing Method (EPBM), with precast concrete segments cast at a mechanised facility in Mundka. A steam curing system was used to achieve early strength for the segments. The construction took place beneath existing built-up areas, with ground movement monitored by sensors installed on nearby structures. DMRC stated that no settlement was observed during the process. The Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor has 19.343 kilometres of underground sections, forming part of the 40.109 kilometres of approved underground work under Phase 4.Tunnel Boring Machines have been used by DMRC since Phase 1. In Phase 3, when around 50 kilometres of underground lines were constructed, about 30 TBMs were deployed across the capital. These machines are designed to excavate through varying strata and are widely used for tunnel construction in urban areas to minimise surface disruption.

(REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) The Pune-Nagpur-Pune Vande Bharat Express proposal was approved during a high-level virtual meeting chaired by Satish Kumar, principal secretary, Railway Board, on Monday. The meeting reviewed progress on various railway projects under the Central and Western Railway zones, including Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat Express trains and station redevelopment works under these schemes. Swapnil Neela, chief public relations officer, Central Railway, Mumbai, said, 'Discussion on launching the Pune-Nagpur-Pune Vande Bharat Express has been initiated by the ministry of railways. Following route surveys and technical evaluations by senior officials, the train schedule will soon be finalised.' Railways factors in desire of travelling public for departure of Coimbatore-Mangaluru Express from Mettupalayam station

The Railway Ministry has taken cognisance of the demand raised by a CITU functionary in Mettupalayam for extension of Mangaluru-Coimbatore Express (No. 16323/ 16324) to Mettupalayam. In a representation to the Railway Board routed through Salem Railway Division, Southern Railway, S. Basha, general secretary of Mettupalayam Talukka Podhu Thozhilalar Sangam affiliated to CITU, mooted utilisation of the express train that is brought to Mettupalayam Railway Station for overnight halt for passenger service, and, thereby, designate Mettupalayam as the starting point. The train is taken to Mettupalayam Railway Station at 10 p.m. without passengers, and it departs from there at 6 a.m. the following day with empty coaches. The train with 17 coaches, if used as passenger service between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam and back, will fetch substantial revenue for the Railways, Mr. Basha said. Mettupalayam could be designated the starting point for the train that departs from Coimbatore Junction at 7.50 a.m., Mr. Basha said, espousing the cause of the trading community in Mettupalayam and surroundings. Since the train passes through a number of districts in Kerala, the trading community in Mettupalayam will be benefitted, Mr. Basha said. The public believe that the overcrowding of the MEMU service departing from Mettupalayam at 8.20 a.m. could be considerably reduced if the railway station is made the starting point for the Mangaluru express train.
