IMD forecasts heavy rain in some West Bengal districts till Aug 10
Agency: Kolkata, Aug 5 (PTI) The IMD on Monday forecast heavy rain in some districts of West Bengal till August 10, owing to an upper air circulation over north Bangladesh and an active monsoon trough. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar till August 10, the India Meteorological Department said in a bulletin. The south Bengal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Bankura and Purulia are also expected to receive heavy rain till the morning of August 8, it said. Light to moderate rain will occur in all the other districts of West Bengal, the IMD said in its forecast till August 10. Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district recorded the highest rainfall in West Bengal in the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Tuesday at 48 mm. Kolkata recorded 42-mm rainfall during the period, it said. The weatherman has forecast thunderstorms with lightning in Kolkata till August 8. Four dead after cloudburst triggers flash flood in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi
Several persons were feared dead after a cloudburst triggered a flash flood in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday, The Hindu reported. At least four persons have died, PTI quoted District Magistrate Prashant Arya as having said, citing reports. Videos posted on social media showed several houses having been damaged or swept away. The rescue operation is underway, said Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The district administration, the Indian Army, and the national and state disaster relief forces were involved in the rescue efforts in the Dharali area of Uttarkashi, the chief minister said. Dharali is about 18.5 kms from Gangotri, a Hindu pilgrimage town. 'People are being evacuated to safe locations on a priority basis, and the situation is being continuously monitored,' Dhami said. 'The administration is fully alert and providing all possible assistance to the affected citizens.' Locals fear more than 20 hotels and homestays have been washed away in the flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in Uttarakhand's Dharali village near Gangotri on Tuesday. Scary visuals of the cloudburst-triggered flash floods emerged on social media, showing several buildings being swept away. (Live Hindustan) The tragedy in the Himalayan valley near Harsil in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district was caught on videos, which showed the sheer scale of the devastation. The cloudburst took place in the catchment of a local stream that joins the Bhagirathi river. At least 10 people were buried under the debris, Rajesh Panwar, a local resident, told PTI, adding that 20-25 hotels and homestays may have been swept away.
