Galway's John Shortt claims sensational gold at world juniors
The 18-year-old, already the European junior champion in the event, swam a sensational second 50m to top the podium. Shortt, who is from Galway, made the turn in third and then powered into the lead, finishing in 53.86. The time was just slightly slower than the new Irish junior record of 53.80 which he had set in the semi-final on Tuesday.
"It wasn't pretty, but we got the job done and I'm really happy with just being a world champion now," Shortt said immediately after his win.
"My back end last night was really good. It's just my front end needed some touching up, but that was a really quick first 50 for me, so I'm very happy with that."
He finished ahead of second-placed Georgii Iakovlev (53.94), who was swimming under a neutral flag, and American Gavin Keogh (54.06) who was third.
Shortt is the only Irish competitor at the championships. He will also go in the 50m and 200m backstroke events.

Cork MMA fighter hoping to pick up another win at Hannover event
Irish fighter Jack Maguire is gearing up for one of the biggest challenges of his career as he steps into enemy territory for OKTAGON 75 in Hannover on 13 September. The Cork native, who boasts an impressive record of four wins and one loss, will face local favourite Hugo Vach in front of a 12,000-strong crowd. The event, hosted by the rebranded OKTAGON organisation, promises to be one of the most electric nights on the European MMA calendar. Speaking ahead of the bout, Maguire said: 'I don't go out of my way trying to fight in enemy territory, but I do enjoy fighting abroad. The build-up is a lot easier once I'm there with my team and coaches. I get to fly in, feel the energy of fight week, nobody knows me and I get to fly home with a story.' He seems strong everywhere and looks comfortable in the cage. I think it's a tricky fight stylistically for the both of us. Who knows how the fight is going to be but I'm prepared for whatever.' The event also includes a heavyweight bout between Lazar Todev and Luis Barbosa, while flyweight contender David Dvořák faces Mohammed Walid. Minnie Hauk proves too strong in Yorkshire Oaks
completed an Oaks four-timer with a neat victory in the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks. One of two runners for Aidan O'Brien in the contest, the bay came into the York Group One with Cheshire, English and Irish renewals on her CV this term and was ridden by Ryan Moore as the 8-15 favourite. Her stablemate Garden Of Eden set the pace and David O'Meara's Estrange did ensure the winner had a race, but the triumph was ultimately light work by three and a half lengths on the line. Royal Fixation sprinted away from the field to land Group Two honours in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York. Trained by Ed Walker and ridden by William Buick, the 5-2 joint-favourite was settled well off the pace in the six-furlong contest and had plenty of ground to make up as the race began in earnest. But once Buick got lower in the saddle, Royal Fixation picked up in style to beat market rival America Queen by a length. Staya also made late gains to be beaten a further two lengths in third. Clive Cox ruled the Harry's Half Million By Goffs once again as Song Of The Clyde came out on top. The Middleham Park Racing-owned colt was ridden by Rossa Ryan and settled into a position at the fore of the 21-strong field in the early stages as a 15-2 shot. As the race progressed he did not falter, putting his head down to lengthen towards the line and give his stable a third successive win in the richly-endowed sales race. Bullet Point could make a swift return to York on Saturday after stamping his class on Thursday's €173,000 Clipper Handicap. A winner at Newcastle and Newmarket in the autumn, the William Haggas-trained four-year-old picked up where he left off when completing his hat-trick at the Craven meeting in April and emerged with plenty of credit when second in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot next time. Having again filled the runner-up spot at the Berkshire track last month, Tom Marquand's mount was the 15-8 favourite to regain winning ways on the Knavesmire and while he was briefly caught in a pocket, he quickened up smartly once the gap came to win by a length from Cerulean Bay.
