PM: No Malaysian should be left behind

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government's infrastructure development efforts would include structural economic reforms aimed at increasing the people's income.
This policy, he said, would involve improving schools, upgrading hospitals, and enhancing transport networks.
He added that infrastructure development would not be limited to the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), but would also include continuous improvements to public facilities and services.
"The people are not only given promises of hope, but are also supported in a tangible and ongoing manner.
"The strategy to raise incomes includes structural reforms, attracting high-quality investments, empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and strengthening the technology and innovation ecosystem.
"Every citizen should have the opportunity to progress, regardless of ethnic or cultural background," he said in his speech in conjunction with the official birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
Anwar said all efforts to strengthen national integration would continue to be intensified to ensure no one is left behind in the journey towards a better future.
This, he said, was because stability and national unity are fundamental prerequisites for progress.
"In a rapidly changing and challenging world, unity is not a choice — it is a necessity," he said.
Touching on geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs imposed by the United States, Anwar said Malaysia remains firmly grounded and has been among the earliest and most agile nations to safeguard the interests of its industries, businesses, and people.
As Finance Minister, he said comprehensive and holistic strategic measures have been taken to sustain Malaysia's economic stability and competitiveness.
"The strength of a nation lies not only in its growth figures but in the resilience of its people.
"Growth in agro-food yields, local products, and the resilience of domestic industries continue to serve as key pillars of the economy.
"The unwavering support of the people reflects a strong national spirit and growing awareness of the importance of self-reliance amid global uncertainty," he said.
He said Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship has further strengthened the country's role as a catalyst and leader in regional diplomacy. A comprehensive and inclusive approach, he added, has opened up opportunities for cooperation in trade, green technology, food security, and regional peace.
"This Asean Summit has been one of the most significant in Asean's history, marking the first time Malaysia, as Chair, successfully brought together three major regions — the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), China and Asean.
"This historic moment reflects our joint efforts to ensure the continuity of civilisations, stimulate national and regional economies, and deepen cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
"The recently concluded summit, along with the hosting of Lima '25 (Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition) in Langkawi, stands as a testament that teamwork is key to realising our national aspirations," he said.
Anwar also said that in line with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the country is ready to welcome the world with the warmth and spirit of togetherness of its people.
"God willing, Visit Malaysia Year 2026 will serve as a new catalyst for economic growth and job creation.
"It is not merely a tourism agenda, but a manifestation of our love for the homeland, its culture and heritage.

Govt to set up special task force to address financial irregularities

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the decision to set up the task force was made during the special Cabinet committee on national governance meeting today. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The government will be establishing a special task force to address financial irregularities, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced today. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the decision to set up the task force was made during the special Cabinet committee on national governance meeting today. 'As part of efforts to strengthen the role of the national audit department through amendments to the Audit Act 1957, the meeting agreed to establish a task force to address serious irregularities,' he said in a Facebook post. During the meeting, he stressed the importance of addressing audit findings related to financial irregularities that could undermine the country's fiscal management. He said the new task force will ensure that follow-up actions are more holistic, targeted and have high impact, in keeping with the principles of accountability, transparency and integrity. Last month, Auditor-General Wan Suraya Wan Radzi said the amended Audit Act, which came into force last year, empowers the department to conduct audits on 1,856 GLCs. She was quoted as saying the amendment expands the department's scope, thereby strengthening the government's oversight of governance and financial management within GLCs. The changes include the expansion of the auditor-general's powers to include audits of entities receiving government financial guarantees, by introducing the 'follow the public money' audit approach. Wan Suraya said, moving forward, all GLCs would be held accountable for any irregularities identified in the auditor-general's report. She highlighted that the committee responsible for following up on actions taken based on the auditor-general's report had uncovered several instances of leakages in state and federal financial statements, which are now in the process of being recovered. She added that beyond the recovery of public funds, the audit process aims to determine whether serious irregularities, governance lapses or systemic failures have occurred.

Asean currencies strengthening

A customer withdraws Singapore dollar notes. - Photo: AFP KUALA LUMPUR: Asean currencies are expected to appreciate further this year as global investors diversify away from heavy US exposures, says Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB) yesterday. The research house noted that all major Asean currencies – including the ringgit, Singapore dollar, Indonesian rupiah and Thai baht – are likely to strengthen in 2025. 'However, while this may occur, we are not yet convinced there is sufficient evidence of a real structural shift away from the US dollar,' the bank said in a note. Maybank IB said US President Donald Trump's protectionist stance, speculated preference for a weaker dollar, and tax proposals have contributed to recent declines in the greenback. Market volatility, which had surged across asset classes, has only recently begun to ease. — Bernama

Government to set up task force to address serious financial irregularities

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will be setting up a special task force to address serious financial irregularities to strengthen the credibility of the country's fiscal management, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a post on his social media account, he said the decision was made during the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance (JKKTN) meeting he chaired earlier today. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the committee had taken a serious view of the audit findings on financial irregularities as they could potentially affect the credibility of the country's fiscal management. "In line with efforts to strengthen the role of the National Audit Department through amendments to the Audit Act 1957, the JKKTN agreed to establish a special task force to address serious financial irregularities," he said, adding that this is to ensure more holistic, targeted, and effective response measures in accordance with the principles of accountability, transparency, and integrity. - BERNAMA
