Houthis to adhere to ceasefire with US, says spokesman

Qatar Tribune08-05-2025

Sana'a: Yemen's Houthi rebels have agreed to a ceasefire with the United States, and vowed to adhere to the agreement, if Washington does the same, the group's spokesman has said.
'The US interfered to support the Israeli entity by attacking Yemen. So, if they stopped their aggression, we will stop responding,' Houthi spokesman Mohamed Abdel-Salam told al-Masirah TV.
'If [the US] does not abide by the agreement in any way, the response will be fatal,' he added. He said that talks with mediator Oman have been going on for weeks before the announcement. Oman said that both parties had agreed to end hostilities, including strikes on US vessels in the Red Sea. (DPA)

Tens of thousands perform Eid Al Adha prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Tens of thousands of worshippers performed Eid Al Adha prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque this morning. The chants of 'Allahu Akbar' (God is Great) were heard, heralding the first day of Eid, amidst large crowds of worshippers, despite restrictions imposed by the occupation and its settlers. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers engaged in provocative actions against worshippers leaving Al Aqsa Mosque, singing and chanting. They positioned themselves on Al-Mujahideen Street between Bab Al-Hitta and Bab Al-Asbat. The mosque's courtyards were filled with worshippers coming from Jerusalem and across the Palestinian territories, amid a distinct spiritual atmosphere, despite the restrictions and measures imposed by the Israeli authorities at the entrances to the Old City and the gates of the mosque. Coinciding with Eid Al Adha, the Israeli occupation authorities continue to impose tight security measures in Jerusalem and around Al Aqsa Mosque, preventing thousands from entering.

Three New Zealand lawmakers suspended for performing Maori haka

WellingtoncTypeface:> Three lawmakers in New Zealand were formally suspended from parliament on Thursday for performing a traditional Maori dance, or haka. The three lawmakers, from the Te Pti Mori party, performed the haka in November, to oppose a bill that would have defined the principles of New Zealand's founding document. On Thursday, parliament voted to ban party leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi for 21 days. The previous longest ban from the country's parliament was three days. Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, New Zealand's youngest lawmaker at 22, was given a seven-day ban. All three will receive no pay during their suspensions. 'Parliament has sent a message to our mokopuna [future generations] that their Maori identity is a threat to New Zealand's democracy,' the party wrote on X. (DPA)

‘Premeditated genocide': Brazil President Lula slams Israel over Gaza war

PariscTypeface:> Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused Israel of carrying out 'premeditated genocide' in Gaza during a visit to Paris. 'What is happening in Gaza is not a war. It's a genocide being carried out by a highly prepared army against women and children,' said Lula at a joint news conference in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday. '[It is] a premeditated genocide from a far-right government that is waging a war, including against the interests of its own people,' he said of Israel's 20-month offensive, which has killed at least 54,607 Palestinians so far, according to the enclave's Health Ministry. The Brazilian leader's condemnation of Israel's offensive came as German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told his visiting Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave in accordance with 'prevailing international law'.
