3A district semis: White River beats Decatur, North Thurston blows out River Ridge

Yahoo20-02-2025
Here's a breakdown of Class 3A District 3/4 semifinal games played at Mount Tahoma High School on Wednesday night.
White River found itself in unfamiliar territory, trailing to Decatur at halftime in a 3A District 3/4 tournament semifinal game at Mount Tahoma on Wednesday night. The Hornets had already defeated the Gators twice this season, both by comfortable margins.
The answer the third time around: a heavy dose of feeding the ball to 6-foot forward Vivian Kingston in the third quarter.
Kingston sparked White River's run, the Hornets jumped out to a lead and never looked back, beating Decatur 62-49 to advance to the bidistrict championship game.
'Getting (Kingston) the ball opened up all our shooters outside,' said White River sophomore guard Maggee Schmitz, who scored a game-high 26 points. 'She was feeling it, she got the hot hand, we kept feeding her the ball.
'We knew we had to step it up. We knew we had beaten this team before and we knew we had to play as a team.'
And then Schmitz heated up, scoring 16 of her 26 points in the second half.
'I knew I had to get to the hoop to score, knew I had to try to drive, so that's what I did,' Schmitz said.
Decatur was paced by Iyanna Waltar's 15 points. Jeralynn Sevaaetasi and guard Jayda Thomas added 13 points for the No. 14 seed Gators, who advanced to the semifinal round with a stunning upset of No. 3 Bellarmine in the first round and a win over Auburn Mountainview in the quarterfinals.
Both teams are safely into the state tournament. And now White River (20-2) will get a crack at top-seeded North Thurston in the bidistrict championship game on Saturday, 5 p.m. at Mount Tahoma.
'We've been preparing for that,' Schmitz said. 'We've been watching film and everything. We're ready for it.'
It didn't take long for North Thurston to turn the game into a track meet, pushing the tempo at an overwhelming pace that has become the Rams' signature this season. That was bad news for River Ridge, which didn't have the answers for the questions North Thurston kept asking.
North Thurston ran up and down the court, forcing turnovers, scoring in transition, inside, outside — anywhere and everywhere — running away with a 89-51 win to advance to the 3A District 3/4 championship game on Saturday.
'We just work our butts off on defense, turn them into fast breaks, run those lanes, get wide for open threes or the open layup,' said junior guard Shayla Cordis. 'Then when we get the contact, we finish and it's And-1 every single time.'
Cordis, who transferred from Timberline in the offseason, put on a show, scoring a game-high 37 points.
'At the beginning, I knew my shots weren't falling, so I just attacked the hoop,' she said. 'I stepped back to the three and ever since then my shot was going in.'
Senior guard Grace Lee added 18 points. Senior guard Soraya Ogaldez and sophomore forward Sierra Cordis added 14 points apiece. Ogaldez fouled out midway through the third quarter, picking up her fifth foul on a technical foul after making a shot.
Junior guard Brandi Stanford led River Ridge with 25 points. North Thurston (25-1) has now won 25 straight games after dropping the season opener to Olympia.
'We just keep working as a team,' Cordis said. 'It's just amazing, coming from losing games and being down on myself to now winning all these games with all these new players, it's just amazing. We just keep playing as a team, pushing the ball.'
Defense is the name of the game in Auburn these days. For the second time in the past three games, the Trojans held an opponent under 30 points. Last week, Auburn beat Bethel in the tournament's opening round, 62-25.
Guard Keleesa Howard led the Trojans with 17 points. Ariyana Deloney added 11.
Auburn, the tournament's No. 6 seed, will face No. 4 Camas — which upset top-seeded Union in the other semifinal, 63-56 — in the bidistrict championship game at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Auburn High School.

Mets fans go nuts after back-to-back Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto home runs in loss vs Mariners

The post Mets fans go nuts after back-to-back Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto home runs in loss vs Mariners appeared first on ClutchPoints. Citi Field was rocking in the fourth inning Friday night when Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto went back-to-back, but the fireworks didn't last long as the New York Mets once again collapsed late in an 11-9 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The defeat was the Mets' 14th in their last 16 games, dropping them six games behind the Phillies in the NL East and leaving them clinging to a half-game lead for the final wild-card spot. The frustration was evident, with fans raining down boos after yet another bullpen meltdown. 'It's part of the mountain,' Lindor said after the game. 'You got to climb the mountain, and right now, we're in a very steep part of it.' Lindor wasted no time setting the tone. Facing Mariners ace Luis Castillo, he blasted a leadoff homer to the opposite field — his seventh leadoff shot of the year, tying Curtis Granderson's Mets record. He followed it up in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to left, his 23rd and 24th of the season. On the very next pitch, Soto made it a party. The slugger crushed a solo shot to center, giving the Mets back-to-back homers and a 6-4 lead. The stadium erupted, believing the Mets might finally be snapping out of their funk. Mets collapse again as bullpen troubles continue The Mets' offense kept fighting. Francisco Álvarez added a three-run blast in the eighth to cut the deficit to two, but the comeback stalled against Seattle's late-inning arms. Sean Manaea gave the Mets five serviceable innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven. But the bullpen — supposedly fortified by trade deadline additions — unraveled again. Tyler Rogers allowed a run in the sixth, and in the seventh, Ryan Helsley and Brooks Raley combined to give up five runs as Seattle stormed ahead. Frankie Montas, who was recently shifted to relief after struggling in the rotation, surrendered another run in the eighth. 'It's hard to describe, especially with how much talent and elite arms we got back there,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Bottom line, we got to start playing better. Especially when you get the lead, we got to be able to shut those games down.' Veteran reliever Raley didn't hide his frustration. 'Score nine against a team like that, you probably should win the game. I was part of the problem and didn't get it done,' he admitted. Seattle's offense was fueled by catcher Cal Raleigh, who smashed his MLB-leading 46th homer of the year. The blast moved him past Johnny Bench for the second-most homers in a season by a catcher, trailing only Salvador Perez's 48 in 2021. Raleigh also became the first player in the AL this season to notch 100 RBIs. 'It's pretty crazy, honestly. I don't have any words,' Raleigh said. 'It's kind of a surreal moment.' The Mariners now sit just a half-game back of the Astros in the AL West. Meanwhile, the Mets continue to spiral, searching for answers before time runs out on their season. Tennis legend gets U.S. Open wildcard, will play for $1 million mixed doubles purse

Two-time U.S. Open singles champion Venus Williams earned a wildcard into the main draw, giving fans an opportunity to see the 45-year-old legend at least one more time on the biggest of stages. Williams will be the oldest singles entrant at the tournament since Renee Richards (47) in 1981, according to the International Tennis Federation. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion last month become the oldest player to win a WTA singles match in more than two decades when she defeated former NCAA singles champ Peyton Stearns at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. Williams also competed this week in Cincinnati, losing to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets. 'Coming off of this match, I feel amazing,' Venus said after the 6-4, 6-4 defeat last week. 'So that means in this next period, I won't have to fix injuries. I can work on power and speed instead of trying to make sure I'm not hurt going into the tournament. I'm very excited that I can have a different focus for the U.S. Open.' The singles draws run Aug. 24-Sept. 7 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Williams, a 14-time Grand Slam women's doubles champion, will also play in the reimagined mixed doubles tournament, partnering with Reilly Opelka, in the week leading up to the start of the main draw (August 19 and 20). The winner of that 16-team event will receive $1 million. The mixed draw also includes eight men and six women ranked in the Top 10 in singles and nine Grand Slam singles champions; the defending U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori; and current women's doubles world No. 1 Taylor Townsend. Brewers Activate All-Star Rookie Pitcher Jacob Misiorowski Before Reds Series

Major League Baseball Brewers Activate All-Star Rookie Pitcher Jacob Misiorowski Before Reds Series Published Aug. 15, 2025 3:44 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Milwaukee Brewers rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski has been activated from the injured list after missing about 2½ weeks with a left tibia contusion. The move potentially clears the way for the All-Star right-hander to pitch in the NL Central-leading Brewers' series opener Friday at Cincinnati as they attempt to earn a 13th straight victory, which would match the longest winning streak in franchise history. The Brewers won their first 13 games in 1987. Misiorowski last pitched on July 28 in an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Misiorowski's knee appeared to buckle in the first inning that night as he fielded a dribbler and threw wildly to first base, though he remained in the game and ended up lasting four innings. He owns a 4-1 record and 2.70 ERA in seven starts. Misiorowski has struck out 47 batters over 33.1 innings. In other moves Friday, the Brewers optioned right-handed pitcher Grant Anderson to Triple-A Nashville, placed outfielder Blake Perkins on the bereavement list, put outfielder Isaac Collins on the paternity list and recalled infielder Tyler Black and outfielder Steward Berroa from Nashville. Anderson, 28, was 2-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 53 relief appearances with Milwaukee. The Brewers and Reds last faced off on June 4 in Cincinnati, with Milwaukee winning, 9-1. The Brewers are 42-15 since and have built up an eight-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central, but the Reds aren't that far behind: in the same stretch, Cincinnati has gone 34-25, and improved from under .500 to half-a-game behind the Mets for the NL's third wild card.
