Self-financing medical colleges should not collect fees during internship: TN health minister

CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday said self-financing medical colleges should not collect any fee from medical students during the internship period, and action will be taken if any complaint is received from an aggrieved student.
Subramanian said this while replying to a discussion on a calling attention motion raised by leader of the opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, AIADMK MLA C Vijaya Baskar, VCK MLA SS Balaji, Tamilaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi MLA T Velmurugan and others.
Referring to the allegations levelled by Vijaya Baskar, Balaji and Velmurugan about the collection of excessive fees for medical courses, including internship fee by self-financing colleges, Subramanian said the fee fixation committee can take action only when complaints from individuals are received.
He also recalled how Chief Minister MK Stalin, when he was leader of the opposition, led agitations protesting the governor's delay in approving the 7.5% government quota for undergraduate medical courses. When Subramanian said the AIADMK government issued a G.O. for 7.5% quota only after the DMK's agitations, the AIADMK members objected to it.
Deputy leader of the opposition RB Udhayakumar said Palaniswami was the only CM in the country who issued the G.O. using Article 162 (co-existence of legislative powers) for a 7.5% government quota. Countering it, Subramanian said since the DMK staged a massive demonstration against the governor's delay in giving assent to the bill providing for a 7.5% quota, the AIADMK government issued the G.O. to pacify students who were agitated due to NEET irregularities.

"Are They Maoists?" EPS Slams MK Stalin Over Action Against Sanitation Workers

Chennai: AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) has launched a huge attack on the DMK government in Tamil Nadu led by MK Stalin over the state government's alleged ill-treatment of sanitation workers. At least 900 sanitation workers who had been on a strike for the last 13 days were detained in Chennai. They have objected to the state government outsourcing conservancy services in two city zones. "At the gates of the Ripon Building, in the middle of the night, your administration unleashed oppression - brutally beating and removing sanitation workers who, even during Covid, cleaned up our garbage and kept the city tidy - and detained them at various locations," EPS, who is also Leader of Opposition in the assembly, said in a post on X. "Who are they? Anti-social elements? Gangsters? Maoists? No. They are poor, humble people who work daily to clean and maintain Chennai city. Is it wrong that the sanitation workers, in a lawful manner, protested against you for acting exactly opposite to the promise you gave them?" EPS said. "You happily did photoshoots having tea and coffee with them... Was your friendliness only for that moment? Now, when they are asking you to fulfil your promise, does it make you uncomfortable?" the former chief minister said. EPS reminded Mr Stalin something the chief minister said while the DMK was in the Opposition. "When you were the Leader of the Opposition, in the letters you wrote, didn't you grandstand saying, 'Regardless of any case against them, give these workers permanent jobs.' Do you still remember?" "In the 79 years of independent India, no government has ever unleashed such midnight violence and forced action against poor sanitation workers who serve both our government and our people," the AIADMK leader said. — Edappadi K Palaniswami-SayYEStoWomenSafety&AIADMK (@EPSTamilNadu) August 14, 2025 Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarassu today announced a major welfare package for sanitation workers, outlining new health, housing, education, and social security measures. The announcement came amid the detention of protesting sanitation workers and supporters. Mr Stalin in a post on X highlighted some key details of the package. These include Rs 10 lakh insurance cover for sanitation workers, with families receiving this sum in case of death on duty. — (@mkstalin) August 14, 2025 Despite the welfare package, the state has not withdrawn its plan to hand over conservancy services in Zones V and VI of Chennai to private contractors, nor has it assured permanency of jobs or salary security - the core demands of the striking workers.

Andhra Pradesh govt acts on local status as per President's orders: AG Dammalapati Srinivas

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh government is determining local status strictly in accordance with the President's orders, Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas informed the High Court on Wednesday. Appearing before a bench, comprising Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice R Raghunandan Rao, the AG said under the Presidential directives, only those students who have studied in the State consecutively for four years prior to the qualifying examination will be considered as local candidates. Agreeing with this view, the bench advised the petitioners to take the issue of local status to the Supreme Court for final adjudication. The court said it would issue detailed orders on the matter on Thursday. The petitions were filed by S Khamaruddin of Prathipadu in Guntur district, and Sanapala Venkataramana of Kotabommali in Srikakulam, along with 51 others, challenging the authorities' refusal to treat them as local candidates for medical admissions despite qualifying in NEET. They argued that the decision was based solely on the fact that they had studied their Intermediate education in Telangana.

Could Have Bought Rolls-Royce If I Had Removed More Kidneys: DMK MLA's Remark Triggers Backlash

Last Updated: DMK MLA Kathiravan's comments on kidney surgeries at his Trichy hospital sparked outrage. BJP's Annamalai and AIADMK's Palanisamy condemned it, alleging a kidney-stealing racket. A statement by DMK MLA Kathiravan has sparked an outrage, with political leaders in Tamil Nadu suggesting a kidney-stealing racket is functional at his Trichy hospital. BJP leader Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palanisamy strongly condemned remarks of DMK MLA from Manachanallur regarding kidney operation of people at his family-run hospital. Criticising the Manachanallur MLA, Annamalai shared a video on X showing Kathiravan discussing the profits made by kidney operations in his hospital and comparing it with the price of a Rolls-Royce car. In the video, Kathiravan said, 'After covering the medical expenses and doctor fees, I will have only 2 to 3 lakhs left (after each kidney operation). Do you know the price of my father's Rolls-Royce car? It is Rs 14.5 crore. The total kidney operations carried out by us is only 252, with the profit of Rs 2 lakh per kidney operation, when can I buy a Rolls-Royce car? I could have bought it only if I had removed all the kidneys from people in Thirupattur. My only concern is that no one realised I saved the lives of 252 people. The BJP leader accused the MLA's hospital of stealing kidney of poor weavers from Namakkal. He said that the DMK-led state government did not take any concrete action against the middleman. 'This is not a joke. Poor weavers from Namakkal were lured, their kidneys stolen, and the MLA himself admits in this video that his hospital made at least Rs 7.5 crore from this trade. Yet, the DMK Govt has taken no concrete action. Has their functionary Dravida Anandan, the middleman in this kidney theft racket, even been arrested?(sic)," he added. While former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy suggested people to avoid visiting clinics run by DMK members, saying they 'may lose your kidney". 'Don't even visit clinics run by DMK men even by mistake. You may lose your kidney. A group is prevailing which shows money to poor and is stealing organs. DMK government itself constituted a committee which investigated and discovered kidney stealing in a hospital belonging to DMK MLA. Was there action taken? NO," he said. He added that only the license for organ transplant in the hospital was cancelled, with no arrests made. 'The MLA says that for buying a Rolls Royce car, he might have to remove people's kidneys. His car is worth Rs 12 crore. He has admitted how many kidneys he needs to steal to buy the car, which is evident from the speech," Edappadi claimed. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
