Win or lose, Rafizi's forever a friend, says Nurul Izzah
JOHOR BAHRU : Nurul Izzah Anwar says that Rafizi Ramli will always be her friend, although the pair are competing against one another for the PKR deputy presidency in this year's party elections.
Nurul Izzah said that, whether she wins or loses the contest against Rafizi, she would always consider him a good friend of hers.
'Win or lose, it won't impact the friendship that we have established after all these years. Rafizi wasn't just my friend in the past – he's my friend now and forever,' she said at a campaign event here this evening.
Nurul Izzah and Rafizi are in a one-on-one contest for the PKR deputy presidency, which the latter won in 2022. Nurul Izzah did not take party in the party polls that year and was appointed a party vice-president.
Rafizi has been outspoken and unapologetically confrontational over the past week, training his guns on multiple leaders as he raised what he claimed were recent lapses in party discipline and leadership accountability.
He has not been directly critical of Nurul Izzah but did say that her candidacy had put her father, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, between a rock and a hard place given the only two possible outcomes of the race for the deputy presidency.
Rafizi said PKR would be accused of practising nepotism if Nurul Izzah was elected PKR deputy president while, if he won, critics would claim Anwar had been rejected by his own party.

Bersatu's Hilman Idham to face charge over video remarks on political arrests
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief Muhammad Hilman Idham is set to face prosecution tomorrow over remarks made at a protest last month. According to the Royal Malaysia Police's Classified Crimes Unit, the Gombak Setia assemblyman will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements deemed likely to cause public alarm. The offence is punishable by up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Education ministry to heed Agong, implement anti-bullying campaign
The education ministry said it is currently developing a 2027 school curriculum that will prioritise character education and focus on nurturing values. PETALING JAYA : The education ministry says it will heed the royal decree by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim to implement a comprehensive anti-bullying campaign in all educational institutions under its purview. The ministry said the campaign, starting at the primary school level, will focus on fostering awareness and cultivating mutual respect among students. 'Core values such as respect, discipline and compassion will be instilled in every student. The campaign will be implemented in collaboration with other ministries to ensure greater impact and effectiveness,' Bernama reported it as saying. The ministry emphasised that addressing bullying requires collective effort. 'Everyone must work together to combat bullying. It is our shared responsibility to shape a future generation that embodies strong values and noble character,' it said. It also said it is currently developing a 2027 school curriculum that will prioritise character education and focus on nurturing values to produce people who are well-mannered, ethical and possess integrity. 'The ministry humbly expresses its gratitude for the royal decree from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim regarding the urgent need to address bullying in all educational institutions under the ministry's care. 'His Majesty's words serve as a reminder to the ministry's fraternity of the wide-reaching negative impact of bullying on society and the nation,' it said. Earlier today, Sultan Ibrahim said failing to curb bullying from a young age risked creating a generation that lacks respect and compassion for others. 'Children must be educated about this issue from an early age… and will learn the importance of mutual respect and discipline through such campaigns,' he said in a Facebook post. He said bullying not only damages the mental and emotional well-being of victims but can also lead to serious tragedies. Sultan Ibrahim also said recent amendments to the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code to address bullying had demonstrated the government's commitment to tackling the issue and that a cross-ministerial approach was needed to ensure bullying is addressed comprehensively. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also called today for an immediate end to bullying in schools and the workplace, including at hospitals. He was commenting on several cases, including the recent death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir and that of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, who died 12 years ago.

Guan Eng's lawyers say no intention of having DPP recused

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Lim Guan Eng's lawyers say they have no intention of getting the deputy public prosecutor handling the former Penang chief minister's undersea tunnel graft trial recused, following his comments on the case. Lawyer Ramkarpal Singh said they wished to proceed with the case which has been pending for over five years. He said they might file a recusal application if deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin issued further statements on Lim and the case. Earlier today, Ramkarpal told the court that Wan Shaharuddin had 'concluded' that Lim's ongoing case was 'linked' to a robbery that took place at the home of a witness, G Gnanaraja, this month. 'A DPP should present a case fairly and not take sides. The police said the robbery (incident) has nothing to do with our case,' he said. In his defence, Wan Shaharuddin said he had never linked Lim's case to the robbery, and that he was only responding to a media query on whether Gnanaraja would be accorded witness protection. 'Anything about witness protection needs approval from the (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) chief commissioner. 'There is nothing for me to explain or apologise for (to Lim) and we don't have to prolong this issue,' he added. The hearing continues on Aug 27. Lim is standing trial on charges of using his position as then Penang chief minister to ask Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli for a 10% cut of the profits from the undersea tunnel project and accepting a total of RM3.3 million in kickbacks between 2011 and 2017 from the businessman. He is also accused of two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land.
