How MrBeast ended up in the new season of Love, Death, and Robots
One of the more surprising moments in volume four of Love, Death, and Robots is an appearance from YouTube star MrBeast. He shows up in the episode 'The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur,' playing a sort of twisted game master presiding over a death race on one of the moons of Jupiter. Also, there are dinosaurs. According to LDR creator Tim Miller, who also directed the episode, the collaboration started out simply because MrBeast was a fan of the show. It then solidified once Miller realized he had the ideal role.
'I have this evil game master here, and I thought he would be perfect for that,' Miller says. 'I watched his Amazon show and I thought 'what a dick' often. With some of the contestants, he seemed to take a particular joy in their uncomfortableness. Not because he's an evil guy — he's not, he's a super nice guy. I think he just enjoys the whole machination of people and how they can either work together or against each other. And it seemed to fit this particular role very well.'
Miller says that because MrBeast was such a fan, he didn't actually charge anything for his performance. 'The cool thing is he likes the show so much — we couldn't afford MrBeast prices or anything like it, but he said he'd do it for free,' Miller says.
The inclusion of a massive YouTube star was partly a calculated decision. Miller says one of the goals with this season of the anthology series was to expand the audience, which currently is very focused on fans of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy animation. 'He has a huge audience, and is beloved by hundreds of millions of people, so I'm hoping even a small percentage of them will come to see him in the show,' Miller says.
That thinking is also part of the reason why the show returned to live action with the episode 'Golgotha,' which stars Rhys Darby. Miller said that the show saw interest beyond its core with the season 1 episode 'Ice Age,' in which Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Topher Grace discover a miniature civilization in their freezer. 'Live action does broaden the audience a little bit,' Miller says.
That said, this strategy hasn't really impacted the core of what LDR is. Volume four of the series still has the mix of action, violence, scares, and humor the anthology has become known for, many of which are based on short stories that Miller has been gathering for years. 'Golgotha' is based on a story by Dave Hutchinson, for example, while 'The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur' was adapted from a story by Stant Litore.
'I have a big bag of shorts, 100 or so, and it's added to constantly,' Miller says. 'And every season we kind of mix and match what we think will make an interesting lineup.' One of the new episodes is a bloody battle between soldiers and a demonic creature summoned by the Nazis in WWII, while another is simply a confessional where smart appliances reveal just how gross humans are. And then there's something like 'The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur,' which ticks several boxes. 'It's got a little bit of love story, a little bit of tragedy to it,' says Miller. 'But the main thing, the reason to show up, is because you have dinosaurs fighting each other in space.'
The goal with each new season, he adds, is to find that right balance. The idea is to have a healthy mix between light and dark, fantasy and science fiction, and all of the other elements that go into a new collection of Love, Death, and Robots. Essentially, he doesn't want the show to repeat itself too much — though sometimes that happens by accident.
'We seem to have a preponderance of cats in our episodes,' Miller says. 'It's not on purpose; it's not because I like cats. I don't like cats. It just seems to happen.'

Two of baseball's biggest stars lined up against each other on Friday and produced a blockbuster, historic game. First Aaron Judge and then Shohei Ohtani homered at their respective first at bats of the game, making history as the first reigning MVPs to hit a home run in the opening inning of the same game. The Japanese superstar has already scored 60 runs this season, reaching that milestone faster than any other MLB player in the modern era, according to OptaSTATS. 'I feel like he was copying me,' Judge joked afterward, telling reporters about Ohtani's home run just after his own. 'He's impressive. He's one of the best players in the game for a reason; what he can do in the box, on the basepaths, once he gets back on the mound, it's special.' Though Ohtani's homer tied the game, the Yankees displayed their impressively deep offensive line-up with Austin Wells, Trent Grisham, and Paul Goldschmidt all contributing home runs of their own to make it 5-2 after the fifth inning. There was still time for Ohtani to add a second homer to his tally, and he smashed one out to right center field at the bottom of the sixth, sparking a four-run inning that changed the complexion of the game. That homer, Ohtani's league-leading 22nd of the season, marked the first of five consecutive Dodgers hits, loading the bases and making it a high scoring inning. 'With Shohei, he would probably say it's just like any other game,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters afterward. 'But I do think that when you see the reigning MVP on the other side, and going out there and performing, that brings out even more of a competitor in Shohei. And obviously, it brought up a lot of excitement from the fans.' A two-run single from outfielder Andy Pages in seventh inning gave the Dodgers a 8-5 lead, a margin they never relinquished. The two teams next face each other on Saturday.

Austin Brown, son of Rebbie Jackson, is deep in the family business of music
When Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson are your aunt and uncle – and your mom is Rebbie Jackson and your other uncles are the rest of the members of the Jackson 5 – getting into the music industry could feel like a double-edged sword. So why do it? 'I actually have asked myself that before, but it wasn't really because of (the) level of artists that I have had in my family. It was more so just, music is tough,' musician Austin Brown said in a recent conversation with CNN. 'It is just tough, tough, tough, tough. But for me, there wasn't any other way. It makes me feel good about expressing myself.' Brown is an independent artist who along with his band BLVK CVSTLE recently released 'The Festival' album. For years he has been leaning in to his art, which he said 'allows me to get my emotions out.' As a child he remembers being taken by hearing Stevie Wonder's classic 1985 hit 'Overjoyed,' which came out the year he was born. His mom's hit 'Centipede' was also a favorite, but more so he said he's learned from her example. 'My mom went through a lot in the music industry,' he said. 'She went through just a lot of things, mentally and spiritually, just how tough it could be,' Brown said. 'And my mom always kept a good, balanced head on her shoulders.' Witnessing his father Nathaniel Brown work hard as a business owner also had an effect, as his son said 'I saw that example every day.' 'You know, I didn't grow up the way people might've thought I did,' the younger Brown said, laughing. 'And so when they get around me and they're like 'Yo, you went through the same stuff I went through,' I'm like, 'It's no difference, bro.'' He's had to deal with all the challenges that any other up-and-coming artist has to face. It's been years of songwriting, gigging and getting his music out there. Brown recently headlined a residency at singer restaurant in Los Angeles and has been riding the wave of releasing new tunes and continuing to write new music. But ask him what brings him joy besides music, and he quickly answers that it's playing a board game with his 95-year-old grandmother, Katherine Jackson. 'I'm blessed that she's still here and I get to have those moments with her,' he said. 'Especially when it's me, her, and my mom playing. I cherish those moments big time.' Family is everything to him, and recently the world has been buzzing about a forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic in which Brown's cousin Jaafar Jackson is portraying their legendary King of Pop uncle. Brown had praise for the performance. 'I saw a screen testing of it and it was emotional how great he was,' he said. 'He's gonna blow people's minds.' New Insider Reports Indicate The DCU's ‘Superman' Movie Is Good
Superman This summer will mark the official launch of the DCU with Superman. Well, the official launch other than an animated series about murderous monsters (Creature Commandos). The live-action kick-off stars the most iconic hero in the world and early indications seem to be that it's…quite good. There have been some spins that have tried to paint 'troubled production' in Superman's final days, but it has only filmed 'pickups' in Atlanta recently, not actual reshoots. An additional composer was brought in, David Fleming, to join John Murphy, but both have music in the film and it's not as if one erased the other. One big sign that the movie is solid, other than Gunn saying so himself, is that the entire, finished movie is set to be ready to go as of next Friday, according to THR's Heat Vision. Getting that in a full five weeks ahead of release is reportedly a sign of 'studio satisfaction.' Besides that, there are the one-off tweets here and there about leaked test screenings. Here's filmmaker Joe Russo (not that one) on Twitter, retweeting the production news: 'Can confirm. I have a friend who saw it in April and he said it delivers. You might even say James Gunn's SUPERMAN is… super good.' It always seemed likely that Gunn would land the plane when it came to Superman, as all we have to do is look at his other superhero projects and see that he simply has not missed with any of them so far, a big reason he was tapped for the DCU job in the first place. Here's the line-up of his DC and Marvel projects: Not a bad score in there, and with three films above a 90%. Gunn's Suicide Squad is tied as the second-highest-scored DCEU film with Shazam! and just below Wonder Woman's 93%. The point of all this is that it seems pretty unlikely that Superman is bad, whether it clocks in with an 80%, 90% or more. Marketing is starting to spool up for the film, which releases July 11, and a video went viral this week of David Corenswet in costume talking and playing with children on set after filming with them, drawing many comments of 'this is the 'real' Superman' and such.
