These Are Kroger's Biggest Food Recalls In History
Most major supermarkets have dealt with a food recall or two at some point — sometimes a whole slew of them — and Kroger is no exception. Some of the biggest food recalls in Kroger's history overlap with those of other major retailers due to the sheer scale of food corporations and their vast distribution reach. As one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S., Kroger stays competitive with its private label brands. Yet even those brands are not immune from sloppy practices at suppliers' facilities where faulty equipment or packaging can lead to bacterial contamination, resulting in a rise of foodborne illness.
Bacteria like salmonella, listeria, and E. coli can cause multiple symptoms ranging from mild to severe, typically presenting with gastrointestinal distress. In vulnerable groups, such as the very young, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, symptoms of foodborne illness can escalate, requiring medical attention. From one of the costliest food recalls in history to one of the largest by volume, several Kroger recalls have been linked to hundreds of illnesses and multiple deaths.

In one of the worst food recalls in U.S. history, Peter Pan Peanut Butter was part of an enormous and costly recall from ConAgra Foods Inc. in 2006-2007. At the time, Kroger carried Peter Pan peanut butter. The problem surfaced when a large number of salmonella illnesses caught the attention of authorities, sparking an investigation to determine the source of the bacteria. The outbreak was traced back to jars of peanut butter from both Walmart's Great Value brand and the Peter Pan brand. Testing jars at the plant as well as opened jars from consumers confirmed salmonella contamination. More than 700 people were affected, though authorities suspected the real number was likely in the thousands.
Officials blamed poor practices at the ConAgra plant, citing broken sprinkler heads and a leaky roof that allowed excess moisture to support bacterial growth on raw peanuts during production. If that wasn't bad enough, it came out that ConAgra knew about its faulty processing plant and knowingly shipped potentially contaminated jars of peanut butter across the nation — though they claimed otherwise. ConAgra was hauled into court, pleaded guilty under a plea agreement admitting complicity, and paid one of the largest fines in a food safety case: $11.2 million. The company also shelled out another $275 million to upgrade its facilities. After doing its due diligence, Peter Pan peanut butter is now safe to eat.
Kroger faced yet another high-profile peanut recall right on the heels of the previously mentioned ConAgra peanut blunder. While the supermarket chain wasn't directly involved, the massive recall from the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) resulted in multiple deaths, arrests, and imprisonments. Kroger recalled a slew of peanut butter products, including assorted bakery cookies, Private Selection Peanut Chocolate Chunk Cookies and Variety Cookie Trays, and Private Selection layer iced cakes.
In 2008, the CDC detected an identical salmonella strain in a group of 13 people across 12 states, which led to its discovery of a 46-state outbreak of salmonella infections. An investigation by the Minnesota Department of Health pinpointed King Nut's creamy peanut butter as the likely source. King Nut, produced by the PCA, had been distributed nationwide, and nearly 3,000 peanut-containing products, including pet products, had to be recalled.
More than 700 people were infected with salmonella, a quarter of whom were hospitalized, and nine died. The PCA shut down after the outbreak, and the company went bankrupt. The FDA found that the PCA knowingly distributed contaminated product, using false certificates of analysis multiple times. As one of the biggest — and costliest — food recalls in history, PCA owner and president Stewart Parnell was found guilty on 67 felony counts, including conspiracy, fraud, and sale of adulterated food. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison followed by supervised parole. The judge held Parnell accountable for $100 to $200 million in losses and harming more than 250 people.
In one of the biggest food recalls in Kroger's history, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation recalled 36 million pounds of ground turkey in 2011 under suspicion of salmonella contamination. Kroger sold this ground turkey under its own brand label in 1- and 3-pound trays of fresh ground turkey, as well as 1-pound trays of turkey patties. After a number of illnesses with the same rare listeria fingerprint cropped up across the nation, an investigation was initiated to find the source of the multi-state outbreak. Those who fell ill reported eating a brand of cheese distributed by Karoun Dairies, and the results of the investigation determined its soft cheeses were the culprit. The brands involved included Karoun, Arz, Gopi, Queso Del Valle, Central Valley Creamery, and Yanni, which were sold at various retailers across multiple states.
Kroger was among the stores forced to issue a recall due to Karoun Dairies' cheeses. The soft cheese in question came sealed in vacuum packs, jars, or pails. Karoun Dairies halted production of the affected cheeses until the recall was complete and the issue resolved. In total, there were 30 reported illnesses, 28 of which resulted in hospitalizations, across 10 states. The outbreak was linked to three deaths and one fetal death tied to the mother's illness.
Kroger faced one of the biggest food recalls in history in 2016, a mess that impacted other major retailers like Walmart and Meijer. Numerous salad green brands and varieties were flagged for possible contamination from a Dole facility in Ohio after a multi-state listeria outbreak led investigators to the Dole processing plant. Kroger pulled bagged lettuce, cole slaw mix, salad greens, kale, and spinach — under brands like Dole and its private labels, Fresh Selection and Simple Truth — from store shelves in 23 states and parts of Canada. In 2018, an outbreak of a multi-drug-resistant salmonella strain, Newport, swept across 26 states, sickening a total of 246 people. This outbreak triggered a massive raw beef recall that hit packages of ground beef sold at Kroger stores nationwide. More than 12 million pounds of raw beef were yanked from circulation by the meat supplier, Arizona-based JBS Tolleson, Inc. The raw beef was flagged as a Class I risk for serious foodborne illness: in this case, salmonella. During the outbreak investigation, authorities expanded the recall product list to include an additional nearly 5.2 million pounds of raw beef.
Health officials with the USDA urged anyone with JBS Tolleson raw beef products to toss them out or return them to Kroger stores for a full refund. A handful of years prior in 2013, this company was linked to a multi-state hepatitis A outbreak that also involved frozen fruit — this outbreak sickened 162 people and 71 hospitalizations were reported. No illnesses were ever reported in connection with the 2019 recall, though hepatitis A has a long incubation period, and individuals may have become sick months later. The frozen fruit products had a two-year shelf life and customers were urged to check their freezers.
Due to the confirmed hepatitis A test, Kroger pulled its Private Selection of triple berry medley and blackberries from its freezer sections in all of its stores nationwide. Other stores affected by this frozen fruit recall included Smith's, City Market, Pick 'n Save, Dillons, and many more.
One of the biggest food recalls in Aldi's history is also one for Kroger's record books. In 2021, Fresh Express and Dole recalled bags of salad greens and related products amid a listeria scare. Investigation into the outbreak, paired with random sample testing at Fresh Express' Illinois facility and Dole's plants in Arizona, Ohio, and California, discovered the presence of listeria lurking on harvesting and processing equipment. The salad products were sold in 19 states and distributed to various retailers under multiple brands.
Kroger pulled an array of its own label's salad products from its shelves, such as kale Caesar, baby spinach, lettuce mixes, salad green mix, and coleslaw, in addition to Dole and Fresh Express products. TreeHouse quickly expanded its recall to include frozen toaster waffles, Belgian waffles, and various pancake products under multiple brands. The wide range of frozen foods included every variety from blueberry to flax to chocolate chip. Kroger pulled its original and buttermilk pancakes, along with Kodiak and Simple Truth vanilla, chocolate, blueberry, and buttermilk pancakes and waffles. There were no reports of illness linked to this frozen food recall.
Perdue Foods LLC recalled frozen, ready-to-eat chicken breast nuggets and tenders in 2024 due to the possibility of the products containing foreign material. Customer complaints alerted authorities to the possibility of metal wire embedded in chicken tenders, and foreign material was indeed identified in a number of consumer packages. Potentially affected items were distributed to major retailers nationwide, as well as sold online. Government promises quicker A&E times under plan to help end corridor care
Hundreds of thousands fewer patients will face long A&E waits, the Government has pledged, as it also set out plans to try and end 'corridor care'. Almost £450 million will be put into creating better care and more facilities, with an emphasis on caring for people closer to their homes, according to the Department of Health and NHS England. The new Urgent and Emergency Care Plan for England says more needs to be done to drive down long waits, cut delayed discharges and improve care for patients. An earlier version of the document said NHS trusts would need to show how, by this winter, systems will 'improve flow through hospitals, with a particular focus on patients waiting over 12 hours, and eliminate corridor care'. But the later version does not commit to a timescale for ending corridor care, instead saying systems must 'improve flow through hospitals, with a particular focus on reducing patients waiting over 12 hours and making progress on eliminating corridor care'. Ministers have also set an ambition for a minimum of 78% of patients who attend A&E (up from the current 75%) to be admitted, transferred or discharged within four hours, meaning 'over 800,000 people a month will receive more timely care'. There will also be a focus on seeing more children. The Government wants to slash the number of patients waiting more than 12 hours for a hospital bed – or to be discharged from A&E – so this occurs 'less than 10% of the time', according to the new document. Around 1.7 million attendances at A&E every year currently exceed this time frame. Further measures in the plan are intended to drive down delayed discharges from hospital, which occur when people are medically fit to leave but care in their homes or community has not yet been put in place. Local performance targets will be set to improve patient discharge times, and 'eliminate internal discharge delays of more than 48 hours in all settings', the plan said. Experts said A&E 'league tables' will be published to drive up performance. Those patients who need an overnight emergency admission will also have their overall stay reduced where appropriate – the average is 'currently nearly a day longer than in 2019'. The plan further sets out how ambulance waiting times for category 2 patients – such as those suffering stroke, heart attack, sepsis or major trauma – will be cut by more than 14%, from 35 to 30 minutes. A previous target of 18 minutes has been repeatedly missed. In the document, there is an aim to 'eradicate' last winter's lengthy ambulance handover delays by meeting a maximum 45-minute target for patients to be handed over to A&E. This should help 'get 550,000 more ambulances back on the road for patients', it says. According to the document, around 40 new same day emergency care and urgent treatment centres will also be established to treat and discharge patients the same day, avoiding unnecessary admissions to hospital. Almost 500 new ambulances will also be rolled out across the country by March 2026. The plan details 15 mental health crisis assessment centres, which are designed to ensure mentally ill people do not have to wait in A&E for hours for care. It comes after the NHS experienced a crisis over winter, with patients waiting hours for beds and regularly being treated in corridors – so-called corridor care. A&E waiting time targets have not been met for more than a decade, while the 18-minute target for category 2 ambulance calls has never been hit outside the pandemic. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: 'No patient should ever be left waiting for hours in hospital corridors or for an ambulance which ought to arrive in minutes. 'We can't fix more than a decade of underinvestment and neglect overnight. 'But through the measures we're setting out today, we will deliver faster and more convenient care for patients in emergencies. 'Far too many patients are ending up in A&E who don't need or want to be there, because there isn't anywhere else available. 'Because patients can't get a GP appointment, which costs the NHS £40, they end up in A&E, which costs around £400 – worse for patients and more expensive for the taxpayer. 'The package of investment and reforms we are announcing today will help the NHS treat more patients in the community, so they don't end up stuck on trolleys in A&E.' Under the plans, paramedics will play a bigger role in the community, with patients given 'more effective treatment at the scene of an accident or in their own homes from ambulance crews'. More patients will also be seen by urgent community response teams in their own homes to try to avoid hospital admission. The NHS is also pledging better use of virtual wards, where patients are monitored by hospital staff from their home, and there are plans to drive up vaccination rates among NHS staff to help protect patients. Royal College of Emergency Medicine president Dr Adrian Boyle said: 'There is some good and some bad – but we wholeheartedly welcome the commitment to publish A&E performance data for each and every hospital and we thank NHS England and the Department of Health for heeding our recommendation. 'In this plan, for possibly the first time, NHS England acknowledges the shameful situation being experienced by patients and clinicians across the country's emergency departments – and that must be commended. 'However, some parts lack ambition – for example accepting that 10% of people will face A&E waits of more than 12 hours, when no patient should. 'Also maintaining the four-hour standard at 78% when the stated aim is that 95% of patients should move through the emergency department within this time – something which hasn't happened for a decade.' He said there were also concerns about how the maximum 45-minute ambulance handover will be achieved 'without exposing patients to risk and increasing overcrowding in our departments'. Association of Ambulance Chief Executives managing director Anna Parry said: 'We are particularly heartened to see the plan's emphasis on the reduction and improved management of hospital handover delays. 'Handover delays have the greatest detrimental impact on ambulance resources and create unnecessary delays and additional harm for thousands of patients each year. 'The elimination of corridor care and the focus on reducing 12-hour waits at emergency departments is also welcomed.' The Liberal Democrats claimed the Government had listened to their calls to end corridor care, but called on ministers to follow through on their promises. Lib Dem health spokesperson Helen Morgan MP said: 'Patients have heard these kinds of promises before only to be led up the garden path. 'We can't bear any more of the shameful neglect and failed delivery that we saw for a decade under the Conservatives. 'It's good to see ministers finally listen to Liberal Democrat demands to end corridor care but the misery in our A&Es will only be prolonged if they continue to move at a snail's pace on social care. 'Until they grasp this nettle, millions are at risk of dangerously long waits in A&E. 'They must see sense and conclude their review into social care by the end of this year.'

USDA: Organic ground beef sold at Whole Foods may be contaminated with E. coli
June 5 (UPI) -- Some packages of organic ground beef sold at Whole Foods stores across the country may be contaminated with E. coli, federal officials have warned. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert Wednesday about 1-pound packages of "Organic Rancher Organic Ground Beef 85% lean, 15% fat." The affected beef was produced May 22 and 23, 2025, and has "Use or Freeze By 06-19-25" or "Use or Freeze By 06-20-25" printed on the label. The packaging also includes the establishment number "EST. 4027" inside the USDA mark of inspection, CBS News reported. While this beef is no longer being sold in stores, officials say some may still be in customers' homes. Anyone with this product should not eat it. "These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase," the alert stated. The ground beef was sold at Whole Foods Market locations nationwide and also sent to distributors in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and Maryland. No illnesses have been reported yet, but the USDA is urging caution because E. coli is a "potentially deadly bacterium" that can cause dehydration, abdominal cramps and bloody diarrhea. "While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome," the alert said. "This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5 years old and older adults," it added. "It is marked by easy bruising, pallor and decreased urine output. More cucumber products recalled as salmonella outbreak expands
(NEXSTAR) — Additional cucumber products have been recalled over concerns of potential salmonella contamination as a multistate outbreak expands. On Wednesday, Maryland-based TGD Cuts, LLC, issued a voluntary recall of sliced cucumber trays and salsa tubs over concerns that the cucumbers may be from Bedner Growers Inc. Cucumbers from the Florida-based grower have been linked to 45 cases of salmonella across 18 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Unlike previous recalls, Wednesday's may not impact the items in your refrigerator. The recalled products, listed below, were distributed to retail and foodservice locations in Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, the Food and Drug Administration notice reads. The salsas and trays are beyond their shelf dates, which ranged from May 20 to May 28, 2025. According to officials, no illnesses have been reported in connection with these items. Some of the salsa was sold under the brand name of Jean's Classy. If you have any of the items listed above, you are advised to discard them immediately or return them to the store where you purchased them for a full refund. This is the latest recall related to potentially contaminated cucumbers. Last week, fresh cucumber salads and vegetable trays sold at Kroger and its affiliated stores in nine states were recalled. Others impacted products include whole cucumbers; made-to-order subs, wraps, and paninis; fresh cut cucumbers sold at select Walmart stores in Texas; veggie and sushi products sold at Kroger, Roundy's, and Weis Market stores in 16 states; salads and salsa; and salads sold to foodservice distributors and supermarkets in eight states. It's caused by the salmonella bacteria, which the CDC estimates cause 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the U.S. yearly. Salmonella infections are commonly associated with diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, according to the CDC. Symptoms can begin between six hours and six days after you've ingested the bacteria. Most people are able to recover without receiving treatment within four to seven days. Illnesses may be more severe for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Some may require medical treatment or hospitalization, the CDC explains. Infections can only be diagnosed with a laboratory test of a person's stool, body tissue, or fluids. In an update last week, the CDC said 45 people across 18 states had been infected with the strain of salmonella linked to contaminated cucumbers. That's up from 26 people across 15 states reported the week prior. Eight people, who all departed from the same locations in Florida on cruises, reported becoming sick within a week of their trip. While three traveled on the same ship, the CDC says sick people were aboard six different ships total. Those ships departed between March 30 and April 12, and illnesses were first reported on April 2. Sixteen people have required hospitalization after becoming ill, but no deaths have been reported. Patients range in age from 2 to 84 years old. Those who got sick primarily live in Georgia and Florida, comprising seven and six of the confirmed cases, respectively. CDC data shows four residents from Illinois and Ohio also fell ill, as did three people each from New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Michigan and South Carolina each had two cases, while Alabama, California, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Tennessee have all reported a single case. The CDC notes the true number of sick people connected to this outbreak may be higher, as some people are able to recover from a salmonella infection without seeking medical care. Additionally, it can take three to four weeks to determine that someone who is sick is connected to the outbreak.
