Heeney's high five cripples Lions in costly loss

Yahoo09-08-2025
Sydney star Isaac Heeney has sliced up the Brisbane Lions in a costly two-point loss for the injury-hit defending champions.
Heeney equalled his career-high with five goals in a 13.14 (92) to 13.13 (90) Gabba win on Saturday, Brisbane kicking three goals in the final minute to flirt with a miracle comeback.
The result leaves the Lions still requiring one victory from their final two home-and-away games to lock in a top-eight AFL finish.
Their top-four hopes could also be out of their hands if other results go against them later in the round.
The Swans flipped the script in the grand final rematch, running freely through a Lions midfield missing injured star Lachie Neale and moving to 11-10.
Tough Brisbane defender Brandon Starcevich (hamstring) was also a late out.
It left coach Chris Fagan without four of his grand final backs, with Jack Payne (knee), Noah Answerth (achilles) and Ryan Lester (concussion) also on ice.
But the lack of pressure, particularly at the Gabba where they're now 6-4 this season, and wayward kicking have been a consistent theme regardless of personnel.
That was to blame again, Sydney shooting to a 19-point lead in an end-to-end first quarter that featured just 16 tackles and few stoppages.
The Swans backed their pace through the centre of the Gabba, shrugging would-be tacklers and sharing the goals.
Lions defender Darcy Wilmot stopped the rot before the first break with a goal against the run of play.
His second in similar circumstances was the Lions' fifth straight as they jumped 11 points clear.
But Heeney led the Swans' response, snapping his second and third goals off his left boot and then soccering through a fourth after another sloppy Lions turnover.

When Heeney earned a free kicked and equalled his career high of five goals the margin was 20.
The Lions bombed another chance and it started getting ugly when Sydney sliced them up twice more to make it seven straight Swans goals.
Levi Ashcroft broke the run and Henry Smith's brilliant solo effort, tapping to himself and snapping a goal, brought it back to 20 points.
A Zac Bailey set-shot miss took some wind out of their sails at three-quarter time, the Lions again missing the mark on an early fourth-quarter chance.
Ruckman Brodie Grundy twisted the knife with a goal when he went forward.
The Lions accumulated costly misses before Morris's third, a late Bailey double and another goal straight from the bounce flattered the scoreline in a manic final 60 seconds.
Lions midfielder Josh Dunkley (31 disposals, seven tackles, six clearances) was a bright light in Neale's absence while Errol Gulden (29 disposals) led the Swans.

'Cannot be ignored': Michael Ennis calls out glaring truth about Latrell Mitchell

Michael Ennis and Warren Smith have both declared that Jye Gray must remain as the Rabbitohs' starting fullback over Latrell Mitchell - not only for the rest of this season but for 2026 as well. Gray was superb again on Thursday night as Souths thrashed the Dragons 40-0. The diminutive fullback made a staggering 353 running metres from 31 carries, scoring a try and breaking three tackles. It was just 17 metres shy of the all-time record for most run metres in a single game (370) - set by Joey Manu last season. The Rabbitohs have now won seven out of 14 games when Gray has started at fullback in 2025. With Mitchell in the No.1 jersey, the Bunnies are just 2-5 this year - albeit against some higher-ranked opposition. Mitchell missed five weeks with a quad injury between Rounds 18 and 22, and played left centre when he made his return against the Titans in Round 23. But his return only lasted one game, and he's missed the last two weeks with a pinched nerve in his back. All up he's only played 11 out of a possible 23 games so far this year. Gray has been much more durable, playing 17 games at either fullback, five-eighth or off the bench. The Bunnies have the bye in Round 26 before a clash with the Roosters in the final round of the regular season. Coach Wayne Bennett is hopeful of having Mitchell back for one last game before their season ends, but he'll have to make a tricky call as to what position he plays. Michael Ennis says Jye Gray's form 'cannot be ignored' Speaking in commentary during Thursday night's game, Ennis and Smith declared there's no way Bennett can shift Gray. "If Latrell does return, surely he stays at left centre where he was a couple of weeks ago," Smith said. Ennis said: "You cannot ignore Jye Gray. He had four try-saves last week (against Parramatta). He had a try and another try tonight. I think Gray stays at fullback and Latrell goes back to left centre for sure." Smith added: "I guess the bigger question is, do they begin 2026 in that formation?" Ennis responded: "That will be fascinating." Crucially, the Rabbitohs face the prospect of losing Gray to a rival club if he doesn't get the playing time he deserves. The 21-year-old is believed to be on the radar of the Perth Bears for their inaugural season in 2027, and comes off contract with Souths at the end of 2026. Tellingly, a poll of over 50,000 Yahoo readers shows the overwhelming majority believe Mitchell should be playing centre rather than fullback. Latrell Mitchell could help Alex Johnston make history Bennett has usually preferred Mitchell at fullback, and turned him from a centre to a No.1 when he signed him from the Roosters back in 2020. But the goalposts have changed in recent times, and Mitchell has shown he's a gun centre when playing there for NSW and Australia. RELATED: Mal Meninga lashes out as Panthers hero linked with Perth Bears move NRL world divided after Barrett and Tallis 'banned' in staggering move If Mitchell stays out wider in Round 27 against the Roosters, it could allow Alex Johnston to break the all-time try-scoring record this season. Johnston bagged a try on Thursday night to take his career tally to 210 - just two shy of Ken Irvine's all-time record. But it could have been more on Thursday night if Mitchell was playing inside him. Johnston's record with Mitchell at left centre is much better than without, and there were a number of instances on Thursday night when Tallis Duncan (a second-rower playing centre) went himself instead of trying to set up Johnston.

Powerball jackpot rises to $50m, Sam Kerr nears long-awaited return, Australia Post halts US transit shipping

Hello and welcome to Yahoo's live news blog this Friday. The Powerball jackpot has rolled over to $50 million after there was no Division one winner on Thursday night. Sam Kerr appears to have set a date for her long-awaited return from injury. The Matildas captain is eyeing Chelsea's first game of the season in two weeks as a possible return from 19 months out through injury. Queensland Police insists there will be more opportunities to protest Palestine supporters after a march across Brisbane's Story Bridge was blocked. Australia Post halts transit shipping as Trump deadline looms Australia Post is blocking countries shipping goods to the US through Australia as Donald Trump's tariff changes loom. The national courier confirmed it will "temporarily suspend" transit shipping to the ABC and comes as low-value goods arriving in the US are set to cop additional tariffs from next week as part of the US president's sweeping tariff changes. Queensland Police promise protest 'opportunities' after blocking bridge march Queensland Police has stressed there will be future opportunities for pro-Palestine protesters after a march across Brisbane's Story Bridge was blocked by the courts. Police successfully argued it was unsafe, despite a similar protest successfully taking place on the Sydney Harbour Bridge a few weeks ago. Queensland's chief magistrate Janelle Brassington sided with police, saying she was satisfied there was a significant risk posed by the protest. And while Acting Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman said the route and the bridge itself were deemed unsafe, he told ABC News Breakfast on Friday that there's "always opportunities" for organisers to protest. "The court ruling applies to this particular protest on Sunday. So there's always opportunities to consider other options down the track," he said. Sam Kerr eyes return after injury nightmare Sam Kerr says she's raring to go after an injury nightmare kept her out of the game for 19 months. The Matildas captain is eyeing a return at the start of Chelsea's season in two weeks time and she plans on hitting the ground running. "For the last, however many years, I've been within the top goalscorers, if not the top goalscorer in the team, and that's where I want to come back to, I've got high expectations of myself," she said. Powerball jackpot rises to $50 million There was no Division one Powerball winner last night, meaning the jackpot has jumped $20 million to $50 million for next week's draw. There were four ticket holders who did manage to take home $147,381 each via Division two. The winning numbers for Thursday night's Powerball draw 1527 were: 12, 18, 16, 1, 14, 4, and 8, with the Powerball number 14. Lottery operators say they plan on rising the price of a Powerball ticket to $1.40 in November, up from $1.20. They say it will enable them to offer even bigger prizes, after a bumper year of big jackpots. The introduction of an extra number required in 2018 meant bigger jackpots were more likely, and in turn, increases interest in what lottery officials say is their "premium" offering to Australians. Meninga lashes out as Panthers premiership hero linked with move to Perth Bears

Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga has hit back at reports linking a number of stars to the new NRL franchise, with Panthers fan favourite Scott Sorensen among the latest to be tipped for a big-money switch. But Meninga says the reality is the Bears can't speak with any players until November 1, after shutting down some of the recent speculation. It's been widely reported that Meninga is eyeing superstars such as Cameron Munster and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui to become one of Perth's first marquee signings. It's been suggested the Bears are preparing a monster $7.5m deal for Gold Coast skipper Fa'asuamaleaui, who has an option in his current long-term deal that allows him to hit the open market on November 1. Four-time premiership-winning Penrith forward Sorensen is another name who has been linked with a switch to Perth. Veteran league reporter Phil Rothfield revealed this week that Sorensen is firmly in Meninga's sights, with the Panthers and New Zealand forward off contract at the end of 2026 and free to speak with rival clubs later this year. The experienced Panthers forward would add steel to the Bears' forward pack, in a similar way that Felise Kaufusi and the Bromwich brothers did when the Dolphins entered the competition. And with Sorensen off contract at the end of 2026, he'd be free to sign with the Bears for their inaugural season in 2027 as of November 1 this year. But Meninga said the truth about Sorensen and any other players being linked to the Bears, is that he is 'not allowed to talk to them' yet. The Perth coach says he understands that players coming off contract will naturally be linked the cashed-up franchise, but suggested any concrete links at this stage were purely speculation. Mal Meninga hoses down reports about Perth-linked NRL stars 'Any player off contract at the end of 2026 is going to be put in the papers linked with the Perth Bears being interested,' Meninga told SEN 1170. 'All these people are being listed that we're interested in, they're all off contract next year. It's not that hard to put a list together. 'All these players are contracted and they're probably talking about staying on at their club a bit longer. We can't fit them in now. How am I going to say no to them all? 'It's difficult to keep the news out of the media. It's not created by us. People can make things up. We're not allowed to talk to them; we haven't expressed any interest. 'As I keep saying every week, if they're available we will probably talk to them. If we feel they're going to be a great addition to the roster, we will talk to them.' Sharks captain Cameron McInnes, Titans playmaker Jayden Campbell and Broncos outside backs Gehamat Shibasaki and Deine Mariner are among a number of other stars who've been linked to the Bears in recent days. Shibasaki and Mariner are both off contract at the end of 2026, and the Broncos have a well-documented salary cap squeeze to manage. Campbell and McInnes are also without a deal past 2026, and the signing of the Titans half would be a particularly huge coup for Meninga. RELATED: NRL world reacts as key figures reportedly barred from Kangaroos tour Fury over 'embarrassing' detail as Alex Johnston moves closer to record Broncos sign Cowboys playmaker as Roosters gun moves to North QLD "There's been a lot of talk about Jayden Campbell's future," News Corp league reporter Brent Read said last week. "He's got one more year left on his deal and he's raised some obvious concerns - similar concerns that Tino's had about Gold Coast at the moment. If they (the Bears) aren't looking at him they're mad." Meninga will start building Perth's maiden NRL roster from November 1, and made it clear that their search for talent would extend far and wide when asked whether there were overseas-based player he planned on holding discussions with. "S***loads," he joked. 'What do you want me to say? Of course there are.'
