Cambodia's Siem Reap is the gateway to ancient Angkor – here's how to get the best out of your trip
Bigger than Greater Glasgow and decked in detailed bas-reliefs, the Unesco -venerated temples of Angkor in Cambodia 's second-largest city of Siem Reap are an outlier of sorts when it comes to tourist attractions: I'd be willing to bet that no one leaves this world wonder underwhelmed or disappointed. Jaws will drop, eyes will not be believed and awe will be inspired. Whatever you're imagining, it's bigger and better – and well deserving of its place adorning Cambodia's national flag.
Home to the jungle-swallowed ruins of the 9th- to 15th-century capital cities of the Khmer Empire, the Angkor Archaeological Park has been on my to-visit list since I found out it existed – more so after watching 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which propelled annual visitor numbers from the thousands into the millions
Lately, there has been another (albeit slower) surge in tourism thanks to a new airport, relocated from its original location near Angkor (vibrations weren't good for the ruins). New flights and increased frequency – especially from regional high-traffic destinations like Bangkok – make Siem Reap an easy addition onto an Asian itinerary, which is exactly what I did on a recent trip to Singapore, just a short two-hour flight away.
With only a few days to spare, I immediately enlisted on-the-ground travel experts Unforgettable Travel Company to make the most of my time. As with most visitors, my trip centred around a visit to Angkor, starting with Angkor Wat, the most famous of the thousands of temples that span the 400sq kilometre area.
'The locals have always known this was here, but the French came and wrote books about it and made it world famous,' says my local guide Nivath, born and raised in Siem Reap, as we walk in the predawn darkness towards the moated, 12th-century Angkor Wat. I can only just barely make out its lotus-bud-like towers against the navy clouds. Many visitors come at dawn to beat the heat and watch the sun rise, and as I wait for the sky to lighten into a watercolour of pinks and purples, we explore the gopura (entry gate) in the glow of a camera phone torch.
Nivath shows me the bas-relief of the apsara 'heavenly dancers' expertly carved into the colossal bricks of sandstone, before taking me to the Buddha statues, shaded under golden parasols and draped in a saffron-hued sarong. While Angkor Wat was originally a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, Cambodia is now mainly Buddhist. Some visitors may not realise Angkor is the largest religious site in the world, still home to several working monasteries.
'Many Cambodians come for religious reasons, as well as for tourism,' Nivath says. As such, there's a requirement to dress modestly, with no bare shoulders or legs, meaning your Lara Croft skin-tight getup must be left at home. Wearing trainers or flat boots is also advisable because of the uneven ground and lots of steps (often supported with raised wooden platforms to preserve the stone).
After a dazzling sunrise, we spend over an hour examining Angkor Wat's long decorative corridors, steep stairs and hidden nooks guarded by stone statues of Khmer lions and serpent-like naga. Next, we head to the two other major must-see temples: Ta Prohm, also known as 'the Tomb Raider temple', engulfed octopus-like in the creeping roots of the silvery sponge trees; and Bayon Temple, famed for its serene four-sided faces representing the Buddhist principle of the four sublime states of mind. While all three of these major temples are busy, they're not overwhelmed with crowds, and it's easy to steal away and find a peaceful spot.
One of my most potent memories is picking my way through a packed breakfast at the tumbledown Ta Nei temple, listening to the call of the Indochinese barbets and chattering green parakeets in the strangler fig trees overhead.
Another quiet site is Neak Pean. Nivath seems to know all the best spots, and if he ever wanted a break from guiding, he'd make a good art director, as he also knows all the best angles. One day at Angkor is enough to see the trio of blockbuster temples plus a few hidden gems (especially as we have a car to get around the massive complex), but given another day, I'd opt to explore by mountain bike, which is also possible.
Most hotels will arrange a packed breakfast for those heading out to Angkor at dawn, and my hotel, the historic, palm-lined grand dame Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor, does a magnificent job with a flask brimming with steaming coffee, pink guava juice, and flaky rambutan pastries and lotus-paste buns, all charmingly packed in a leather-trimmed white canvas backpack(Nivath's tip: don't carry any food in plastic bags, as it attracts the very cheeky macaque monkeys).
Beyond Angkor, there are other temples to explore. Nivath recommends Banteay Srei or the citadel of the women, where the 'stones are pink and the carvings are even more detailed.' It's an easy stop en route to the waterfalls of Phnom Kulen, which Nivath also recommends. Another popular activity is to visit the floating villages of Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia (Unforgettable Travel Company can arrange all of this).
After playing at Indiana Jones all morning, I spend the searingly hot afternoon back at my hotel. There's nothing more divine than lying out by the palatial pool, dressed in one of Raffles' cream striped satin dressing gowns. The building dates back to 1932, the French colonial Indochine period, and it was the first luxury hotel of its kind in the city, still housing an original wrought-iron lift in the lobby. It very much still maintains the air of a vintage reverie: iridescent dragonflies flit around the pool like jewel brooches come to life; white frangipanis blossoms scent the air; and straw-hatted staff fetch dewy G&Ts fashioned with Herbal Kulen gin, made in a nearby botanical farm that is open for visits. If you need more convincing, it's one of Angelina Jolie's hotels of choice according to Nivath. There's also a make-your-own mimosa bar at breakfast with Charles Mignon champagne if that hasn't swung it.
Evenings at the hotel are marked by live piano melodies and cocktail-hour Grand d'Angkor slings, a riff on the Singapore sling made here with gin, pandan and galangal syrup, plus cherry brandy, lime juice and pineapple juice. Set across from the Royal Residence (home to the king when he visits), the location couldn't be better, and it's only a 10-minute drive to Angkor.
I spend my still-warm evenings exploring Siem Reap, which feels more like a town, set along the unmoving, mirror glass river and strung with monasteries and street food hawkers. Nivath takes me to 60 Road night market where we eat Khmer sweets like pumpkin custard and palm sugar glutinous rice balls. Some sell fried insects: glistening crickets, plump larvae and crispy tarantulas with abdomens the size of ping-pong balls. 'It's Cambodian KFC', Nivath jokes, though he also takes the time to explain how the practice was driven by wartime poverty and famine created by the Khmer Rouge regime of the late 1970s. Visitors can learn more about this ghastly history at the Landmine Museum.
After the night market, the food keeps coming at the partying spot of Pub Street, in the city's Old French Quarter. Lined in balconied colonial buildings and hanging neon lanterns in primary colours, western tourists eat fried ice cream and get fish pedicures. Music pumps from every direction, while tuk tuks weave through the crowds. Nivath takes me to the Asana Old Wooden House, for hip Khmer tipples served in an original stilted wooden house dating back to the 1960s – the last traditional house in this district. Our final bite of the night is at Khmer Kitchen for amok, Cambodia's national dish of fish coconut curry, made here with freshwater snakehead fish and best paired with an icy draft of Angkor Beer for just $1 (prices are typically listed in US dollars or Cambodian riel, as both are accepted).
The food is mind-bogglingly affordable but also delicious. I have the best herb-stuffed fresh spring roll of my life at the treehouse-like Chanrey Tree (stop by their spa next door, Sokkhak, for a killer massage). And I delight in the tasting menu of haute Khmer cuisine at Embassy, an all-female kitchen where the nine-course set menu costs just $54 (£42). While Cambodian food isn't as well-known around the world as the cuisines of neighbouring Thailand or Vietnam, it emphatically deserves to be. The same can be said for the country as a whole.

Albania's women silk makers weave big dreams for ancient trade
Albanian women have long been famed for their stylish and colourful traditional attire that some still wore until relatively recently. And few were more chic than the women of Zadrima who wore their own handmade silks and headdresses, their fine gauze blouses set off with belts and swathes of red silk. But that age-old know-how was almost lost until silk making was dragged back from the edge of extinction by a group of local women who now master every stage of production, from raising the silkworms to weaving the precious fabric. "The history of silk" in this region of northern Albania nestled between the mountains and the Adriatic Sea "goes back to the 10th century", ethnologist Aferdita Onuzi told AFP. Often the silk was exported and it was particularly prized by the Italian and French nobility. But Albania's postwar communist regime centralised it all to a single factory for processing and weaving silk, which was completely destroyed after the fall of the dictatorship in the early 1990s. Then massive emigration and competition from synthetic fibres nearly killed the tradition. But for the last 15 years or so Franceska Pjetraj and her family, along with other women in the picturesque region, have been working to revive the craft. "It is a tradition as old as Zadrima," said Franceska, 30, who has opened a workshop with her mother Mimoza. "In the past, women here dressed in silk -- it was one of their joys," she added. Like other women in the long impoverished region, they are also weaving dreams of a better life. "Here, everything is done in an artisanal way, from cultivating and extracting silk threads to weaving and completing the final product," said Mimoza, 54, a nurse. 'They are like babies' The Zadrima region is ideal for white mulberry trees, whose leaves are silkworms' favourite food. "Raising a silkworm is fascinating," said the younger Pjetraj while tending to her caterpillars, which are carefully installed on the shelves of a dark barn. "They are like babies -- they demand as much dedication and love as children," she added. Some seem disturbed at the slightest noise, while others continue weaving their cocoons, secreting the famous silk thread. "Their life cycle lasts five to seven weeks," Pjetraj said, "and during this time they must be fed and given close attention". Delicate and highly sensitive, the worms cannot tolerate temperatures above 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit), nor cold or humidity, much less pesticides. And thunderstorms really frighten them. "From cocoon to thread and from thread to weaving, it is an art," said her mother Mimoza. "It requires skill, patience, but also passion." The cocoons are harvested before the butterflies leave them. They are first plunged into a bath of boiling water to soften them, then brushed with a small broom to unravel the threads, which are stretched and then woven. Last year Mimoza and her daughter were able to produce 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of silk thread that was transformed into stoles, skirts and blouses. "Happily we have no shortage of orders," said Mimoza, "because of our high quality and competitive prices." Hundreds of other women have followed their example in Zadrima and its surroundings and taken up breeding silkworms and artisanal weaving. Rozana Gostorani, 18, hopes one day to see the silk she weaves on the runways of big luxury fashion brands. "It is a very ancient trade... and also a high-quality art. I think (fashion houses) like Versace or Dolce & Gabbana should draw inspiration from the garments we produce here," she smiled.(AFP)

Why you should swap Lisbon and Porto for this picture-perfect Portuguese city
Sitting almost completely alone at the top of the 577 steps up to the Bom Jesus hilltop sanctuary, I took a moment to absorb the details. The sun was setting over the Portuguese city of Braga to the west, casting a golden light from Monte das Caldas and illuminating the delicate Baroque façade of the Unesco-listed Bom Jesus De Monte, which towers 400 metres high. The sound of water falling from an imperial eagle-topped fountain mingled with the chirrups of swallows who swooped and dived in the final embers of daylight. This is one of the top attractions in Braga, and I sat with just my thoughts for company, only three other people in sight. Braga is the lesser-known of Portugal's three foremost cities, foregoing top billing to Lisbon and Porto. Whilst these are both beautiful cities, in recent years they have seen tourist numbers soar, with Lisbon welcoming 8.8 million visitors in 2024 and Porto having nearly 6 million in the same period. It can be difficult to find a table to find a spot for a quiet coffee or to take a good picture without a crowd in front of you. So, consider Braga as the perfect alternative. Last year, the city attracted 639,000 visitors. 'It is the ' Rome of Portugal', not 'Portugal's Rome'.' Corrects Luis Ferreira, Head of Economy and Tourism Division, as we chat in the Art Deco-style tourist office in the centre of Braga. Why has the city achieved this moniker? It has a depth of history equal to that of Rome from the founding of Bracara Augusta in 16 BCE through medieval Christianity to 18th-century reinvention. I began, like any good visitor, with a map, a coffee and a pastry (all for just €3) in Lago Santa Cruz, enjoying the warm spring sunshine on my face. To one side of me was the ornate Baroque façade of Igreja Sanat Cruz with its two towers harbouring eight bells, set against the azure blue of the morning sky. On the other side, the Igreja de Sao Marcos, its façade flanked by two colonial-style wings. In the last year, Braga has invested in a new guidebook with suggested itineraries, and I traced the routes, realising just how much there is to see. Roman ruins, over thirty churches, each with four bells (Braga is also known as the City of Bells), a cathedral, winding ancient streets, modern art galleries, museums, and, of course, plenty of shops. I headed first to the Porto Nuovo area of the city, located at the edge of the old town, and stumbled upon the Cathedral Se with its medieval turrets rising above the two- and three-story buildings. It looked Gothic, like cathedrals in the UK and France. Accepting that fate diverted me there, I went inside to gaze at the vaulted ceilings, ornately decorated altars and side chapels. A serene, majestic place. And then I turned around. Set over the entrance was the high choir and organ – a Baroque gilt masterpiece. Thousands of cased bronze organ pipes provide the foreground to the gold and black of the high choir itself, and two, eye-like stained glass windows provided dashes of colour. The ceiling frescoes were hypnotisingly beautiful. Recovering from this sensational scene, I walked through the pedestrianised Rua Dom Paio Mendes, where the aroma of grilled sardines, bacalhau (saltedcod) and francesinha (a decadent sandwich of meat, melted cheese and beer-and-tomato sauce) wafted from cafés and restaurants. I took a moment to appreciate the 18th-century city gate, Arco Porto Nuova, located in the seemingly secluded Largo La Praga Velha. Here, the buildings set in narrow alleyways are painted bright yellow, burgundy and cornflower blue. Pleasantly quiet during the day, at night these streets came alive with diners out to enjoy the warm spring evening. The tapas and the vinho verde that are so reasonably priced here were too tempting, and I chose the restaurant Inato, a Michelin-recommended spot, minus the high prices. At my window table, I tucked into possibly the best focaccia I have ever eaten, followed by beautifully crisp tempura cauliflower complemented by a subtly spicy mayonnaise. The traditional bacalhau I ordered for my main came with a side dish of grão de bico (chickpeas), into which a soft egg was mixed. With a bottle of water and a glass of vinho verde, the meal came to less than €44. The following morning, as I strolled through Braga's large Praca da Republica, I was struck by how each street revealed a new discovery. A waitress recommended I climb the Nossa da Torre for city views, and from its five gallery-filled floors, I spotted my next destination, Bom Jesus de Monte, which rises triumphantly from the slopes of Mount Espinho like a tiered white wedding cake. The zigzag staircase of 577 steps at Bom Jesus represents the soul's tortuous journey toward salvation. Each landing has fountains that depict biblical scenes. Pilgrims would traditionally climb on their knees, but thankfully, a water-powered funicular provided a rather more sedate ride to the top. The sanctuary is adorned with frescoes and sculptures and surrounded by manicured gardens and a tree-lined park. As I gazed out across Braga, I considered that while Porto and Lisbon jostle for attention with their crowds and queues, Braga simply exists; authentic, unhurried and profoundly Portuguese. As the swallows disappeared with the sun, I realised that I'd found that rare thing in modern travel, a destination that reveals itself slowly and belongs as much to locals as to visitors. The Rome of Portugal may be lesser known, but perhaps that's precisely its greatest gift. Getting around The centre of Braga is largely pedestrianised, and the city has worked to make most areas accessible to wheelchairs. Drop curbs are common, ramps into older buildings are always available. There are steps into some of the shops. Travelling by foot is the best option, but taxis are widely available. A taxi from the Old Town to the foot of Bom Jesus de Monte will cost around €6. Where to stay Guest House Vila Santa Cruz A good budget option is Guest House Vila Santa Cruz, a simple guest house with stunning views, completely central to Braga Old Town Holiday Inn Braga For a mid-range option, Holiday Inn Braga opened Oct 2024 and offers familiar comforts in a modern light environment with a gym, swimming pool and sauna, parking and a 24-hour restaurant. Hotel do Templo Hotel do Templo near Bom Jesus de Monte has a stunning location right outside of Bom Jesus. It has a swimming pool and spa facilities. Where to eat Inato Bistrô is a Michelin-listed restaurant mixing classics with a modern twist but without the price tag. Dishes from €19. Cozinha de Se is a modern spot with a Scandinavian feel.
