Elon Musk Quietly Pauses Plans For Launch Of His Own Political Party: Report
Elon Musk is stepping back from launching his own political party to focus on Tesla and SpaceX amid financial challenges. Elon Musk is quietly stepping back from plans to launch his own political party in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter. The billionaire entrepreneur, who heads Tesla and SpaceX and owns X (formerly Twitter), reportedly told associates he wants to concentrate on his companies rather than push ahead with the 'America Party", unveiled in July after a public row with US President Donald Trump over tax and spending policy. Elon Musk appeared to dismiss the report in a post on X, writing: 'Nothing @WSJ says should ever be thought of as true." The paper reported that Elon Musk has been seeking to maintain close ties with Vice President JD Vance and has acknowledged privately that forming a new political party could jeopardise that relationship. People close to the discussions told the Journal that Elon Musk may instead consider directing financial support towards JD Vance if he decides to run for president in 2028. Last year, Elon Musk spent nearly $300 million backing Donald Trump and other Republicans, exerting outsized influence during the opening weeks of Donald Trump's presidency and the launch of the new 'efficiency department" DOGE. Elon Musk's Tesla Suffers The latest report comes as Tesla faces mounting financial and operational challenges. Shares in the electric carmaker are down more than 18% this year after it reported in July its worst quarterly sales decline in over a decade, alongside weaker-than-expected profits. Elon Musk has warned investors to expect 'a few rough quarters" following the Donald Trump administration's rollback of subsidies for electric vehicles. Some investors have also expressed concern that Elon Musk's foray into politics could distract him from his corporate responsibilities. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 17:42 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. US hikes steel, aluminum tariffs on imported appliances, railcars, EV parts
The US Commerce Department said on Tuesday it is hiking steel and aluminum tariffs on more than 400 products including wind turbines, mobile cranes, appliances, bulldozers and other heavy equipment, along with railcars, motorcycles, marine engines, furniture and hundreds of other products. The department said 407 product categories are being added to the list of "derivative" steel and aluminum products covered by sectoral tariffs, with a 50 per cent tariff on any steel and aluminum content of these products plus the country rate on the non-steel and non-aluminum content. Evercore ISI said in a research note the move covers more than 400 product codes representing over $200 billion in imports last year and estimates it will raise the overall effective tariff rate by around 1 percentage point. The department is also adding imported parts for automotive exhaust systems and electrical steel needed for electric vehicles to the new tariffs as well as components for buses, air conditioners as well as appliances including refrigerators, freezers and dryers. A group of foreign automakers had urged the department not to add the parts, saying the US does not have the domestic capacity to handle current demand. Tesla unsuccessfully asked Commerce to reject a request to add steel products used in electric vehicle motors and wind turbines, saying there was no available US capacity to produce steel for use in the drive unit of EVs. The new tariffs take effect immediately and also cover compressors and pumps and the metal in imported cosmetics and other personal care packaging like aerosol cans. "Today's action expands the reach of the steel and aluminum tariffs and shuts down avenues for circumvention - supporting the continued revitalization of the American steel and aluminum industries," said Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler. Steelmakers including Cleveland Cliffs, Nucor and others had petitioned the administration to expand the tariffs to include additional steel and aluminum auto parts.

Elon Musk is ditching his 'America Party', but he has a plan for 2028
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is stepping back from plans to launch a third political party, telling allies he wants to prioritize his companies and avoid alienating influential Republicans, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. According to the report, Musk is now considering channeling his financial clout into supporting U.S. Vice President JD Vance should he enter the 2028 presidential race . Musk had unveiled his 'America Party' in July, shortly after former President Donald Trump signed a sweeping tax-and-spending bill into law—a move Musk fiercely opposed. Announcing the party on X, he declared, 'Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,' vowing that a majority of Americans wanted a new political force. But rather than running candidates nationwide, Musk pitched a narrower strategy: targeting two to three Senate seats and fewer than a dozen House races where tight margins could hand his party kingmaker status in Congress. 'Even a handful of seats could provide decisive leverage,' Musk argued. Public response to his political ambitions has been divided. Data from statistician Nate Silver shows 55% of Americans view Musk unfavorably, while 37% see him positively. Yet a Quantus Insights poll indicates that 40% of registered voters—including a notable bloc of Republicans—would consider backing Musk's party over traditional candidates, with 14% 'very likely' and 26% 'somewhat likely.' Analysts suggest such support could disrupt conservative unity while drawing independents, reshaping the balance of power in Washington. Live Events Incidentally, earlier this month, President Donald Trump named Vice President JD Vance as the "most likely" successor to carry forward his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, while also suggesting that Secretary of State Marco Rubio could play a significant role alongside him. 'Well, I think most likely. In all fairness, he's the vice president,' Trump said in response to a question about who might lead the MAGA movement after him.
