New York Times, Amazon sign AI licensing deal

The Hindu3 days ago

The New York Times said on Thursday it would license its editorial content to Amazon.com for use in the tech giant's artificial-intelligence products, marking the publisher's first licensing deal tied to generative AI.
The multi-year agreement allows Amazon access to its news articles and content from NYT Cooking and sports website The Athletic.
"This will include real-time display of summaries and short excerpts of Times content within Amazon products and services, such as Alexa, and training Amazon's proprietary foundation models," the publisher said.
NYT recorded $4.4 million in pretax litigation costs in the first quarter related to its copyright lawsuit against Microsoft and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, which it filed in 2023.

It's a solid option in the budget segment. Battery life is one of boAt's strong points. Many wireless headphones offer 20 to 40 hours of playback on a single charge. Most boAt headphones come with soft ear cushions and adjustable headbands, making them comfortable for a few hours of use. Over-ear models give better comfort for long listening sessions, while on-ear types might feel tight after extended wear. If you plan to use headphones for long work calls or binge-watching, go for the larger over-ear designs. Sound Quality: Check if the headphones offer balanced audio with good bass, clear vocals, and crisp highs—especially if you love music or binge-watching shows. Noise Cancellation: Look for active noise cancelling (ANC) if you want to block background noise during travel, work, or study sessions. Battery Life: Consider models with longer playback time (20–40 hours) and fast charging support for uninterrupted use. Comfort and Fit: Choose between over-ear, on-ear, or in-ear styles based on comfort. Soft ear cushions and adjustable headbands are a plus. Connectivity and Controls: Make sure the headphones support Bluetooth 5.0 or higher for stable connection. Built-in controls and voice assistant support are useful. Budget and Features: Set a price range and see which features matter most, ANC, dual pairing, water resistance, or gaming mode, then pick the best fit. Elon Musk's tryst with drugs: From ‘good for investors' to only ‘tried prescription ketamine', here's what he's said…

Tech Billionaire Elon Musk on June 1 dismissed allegations of extensive drug use in a post on his self-owned social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Responding to a user joking about the speculations, Elon Musk wrote that he used prescription ketamine 'a few years back' and has not had it since, claiming that the New York Times report on the matter, was 'lies'. However, in previous statements on drug use, especially ketamine, the world's richest person had admitted to using drugs, claiming that it benefitted investors in his company. Responding to a user on X, discussing mental health and drug prescriptions related to the condition, Elon Musk endorsed ketamine as the better option, compared to SSRIs. Known in full as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, SSRIs are a type of antidepressant medication prescribed to ease symptoms of moderate to severe depression, according to the Mayo Clinic. 'Depression is overdiagnosed in the US, but for some people it really is a brain chemistry issue. But zombifying people with SSRIs for sure happens way too much. From what I've seen with friends, ketamine taken occasionally is a better option,' Elon Musk wrote on June 27, 2023. Later, in an interview with CNN's Don Lemon, published on March 18, 2024, Elon Musk admitted to using ketamine and claimed that this is 'beneficial for investors' and that it helps him manage a 'negative chemical state'. Ketamine is used to treat pain and depression and in heavy doses is used as a sedative. 'From the standpoint of Wall Street, what matters is execution. For investors, if there's something I'm taking, I should keep taking it,' Musk told Lemon. Following an NYT report that Elon Musk used ketamine so heavily that it caused bladder problems, the Tesla and SpaceX chief again made his stance known more publicly, albiet with seeming u-turn on his previous admittance. '… to be clear, I am NOT taking drugs! The New York Times was lying their ass off. I tried *prescription* ketamine a few years ago and said so on X, so this not even news. It helps for getting out of dark mental holes, but haven't taken it since then (sic),' he wrote on June 1. According to the NYT report published on May 30, Elon Musk's drug use was allegedly 'more heavy' than previously known. It claimed that he took ketamine often, and also occasionally used Ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms. Responding to queries from Bloomberg, Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesperson for the NYT defended the report as 'thoroughly sourced'. He added that reporters 'interviewed a dozen people' who know or worked with Elon Musk, and saw private text messages, legal documents and photographic evidence. 'We provided Musk with multiple opportunities to reply or rebut their reporting before publication and he declined, opting instead to try to distract with a social post and no evidence,' Stadtlander told Bloomber via email. India's rapid AI adoption, China's open source lead in focus in Mary Meeker report

'Unprecedented' – that's the word frequently used by venture capitalist Mary Meeker—once known as the 'Queen of the Internet'—in her latest trends report on artificial intelligence (AI) development and adoption. The 340-page report, titled 'Trends — Artificial Intelligence,' charts out the speed at which costs of usage are dropping, and how its adoption curve is unlike any tech disruption of the past. 'The pace and scope of change related to the artificial intelligence technology evolution is indeed unprecedented…' Meeker writes in her report, her first major trends report since 2019. While largely upbeat about AI's disruptive promise, the report also outlines cautions against well-known pitfalls including hallucinations, biases, misinformation and slow moving regulation. It also said that while AI platforms have racked up the user-base, revenue per user is still quite low for most of them, with a median of $23. The adoption of AI platforms has been unlike anything that has come before it, the report said. For instance, it took the likes of Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube between 2-4 years to reach 100 million users, but for ChatGPT, it took less than 3 months. The report also speculated, based on data from Morgan Stanley, that while it took between 6-12 years for 50% households in the US to have access to mobile and desktop internet, it will take only 3 years for the same number of households to become users of AI platforms. Owing to its large demography and internet penetration, India has been a key user-base market for AI companies, the report said. It is the second largest market for ChatGPT, and contributes the highest percentage of its mobile app users (13.5%), ahead of countries like the US (8.9%), and Germany (3%). India is also the third-largest user base (6.9%) for China's homegrown platform DeepSeek, and is behind only China (33.9%) and Russia (9.2%). However, the thing to note here is that ChatGPT, one of DeepSeek's main rivals, is banned in both China and Russia. Indians therefore contribute a substantial user base to DeepSeek, despite the availability of its Western rivals. The report said that two different philosophies in shipping AI models are playing out in parallel – closed and open source. Closed models follow a centralised, capital-intensive arc. These models – like OpenAI's GPT-4 or Anthropic's Claude – are trained within proprietary systems on massive proprietary datasets, requiring months of compute time and millions in spending, it said. They often deliver more capable performance and easier usability, and thus are preferred by enterprises and consumers, and – increasingly – governments. However, the tradeoff is opacity: no access to weights, training data, or fine-tuning methods, the report added. Meanwhile, platforms like Hugging Face have made it frictionless to download open source models like Meta's Llama or Mistral's Mixtral, giving startups, academics, and governments access to frontier-level AI without billion-dollar budgets. 'And China (as of Q2:25) – based on the number of large-scale AI models released – is leading the open-source race, with three large-scale models released in 2025 – DeepSeek-R1, Alibaba Qwen-32B and Baidu Ernie 4.5,' it said. 'The split has consequences. Open-source is fueling sovereign AI initiatives, local language models, and community-led innovation. Closed models, meanwhile, are dominating consumer market share and large enterprise adoption. We're watching two philosophies unfold in parallel – freedom vs. control, speed vs. safety, openness vs. optimization – each shaping not just how AI works, but who gets to wield it,' Meeker said in her report.
