AWES 2025 champions women's role in ASEAN's inclusive growth
THE inaugural ASEAN Women Economic Summit 2025 (AWES 2025) marks a pivotal step in Southeast Asia's pursuit of inclusive economic growth, with a focus on ensuring that every woman in the region plays a role in driving progress and energising ASEAN's future.
Women Leadership Foundation founder and chairman Datuk Hafsah Hashim (picture) said the governments of various ASEAN member states are actively working not only to promote rural development but also to champion growth in sectors such as education and healthcare – both essential for unlocking the full potential of women.
'We have leaders who believe in this growth, who are passionate and persistent in pushing for women's contribution to the economy. This enables us to strive for a more energised and prosperous ASEAN,' she told reporters during the AWES 2025 press conference today.
She said the summit will serve as a dynamic platform for fostering regional collaboration, leadership excellence, and limitless opportunities for growth, connection, and impact.
Meanwhile, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said AWES 2025 is a significant platform under Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship, bringing together multiple stakeholders from across the region.
He said the establishment of AWES 2025 aligns with MITI's aim to empower women and youth, as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises, in line with the ASEAN chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
'I believe that with support from all parties, our ministry and the government remain persistent in ensuring continued backing for AWES 2025 year after year.
'Going forward, we want to uplift women through various programmes and expose women entrepreneurs to greater opportunities in new markets through upselling initiatives,' he said.
The two-day summit, which begins today, features sessions on global-local dialogue, strategic brainstorming, leadership lab, mentorship connect, and gala dinner, involving over 700 delegates representing government, business, and civil society across ASEAN.
The summit theme, 'Empowering Women, Energising ASEAN: Pioneering Economic Integration for a Resilient Tomorrow', reflects the urgent need to position women at the forefront of ASEAN's economic transformation, particularly in addressing current challenges such as global tariff wars, digital transformation, and sustainable development. — BERNAMA

The government announced earlier this week that the review would include plans to double investment in public transport in England's urban regions by 2030, to over £15 billion. The defence ministry also seems certain to receive a budget boost in Wednesday's review, but other departments will have to tighten their belts beyond the cuts already announced in March. Areas expected to be targeted include support for disabled people and government operating costs. Thousands gathered in central London on Saturday to protest against those anticipated measures, with many holding placards reading 'tax the rich, stop the cuts – welfare not warfare'.

National Youth Day celebration to showcase elements of Asean
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Youth Day (HBN) celebration on June 13-15 will be unique as it will showcase elements of Asean, in line with Malaysia's Chairmanship of Asean 2025. The HBN Secretariat said the programme for the celebration at Dataran Merdeka includes the Asean Pavillion and Asean Concert to create the spirit of the Asean community and strengthen the culture of Asean countries among the youth. "The role of youth is seen as vital to strengthening Asean's regional network, particularly future collaborations in the fields of economy, leadership, education, technological innovation and social. "In fact, youth can also act as junior ambassadors who can elevate the country's image globally," it said in a statement. Themed "Yakin Boleh" (Believe You Can), the highlight of the 61st HBN celebration will be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who will officiate the event and present the 2025 National Premier Youth Award (APBN) on June 14. "The theme illustrates the confidence, capability and competitiveness of the youth in facing challenges, including that of the current digital era. "This theme also aligns with the Madani government's efforts to empower youths through various strategic initiatives as well as the values of confidence within the Madani framework," it added. With the targeted presence of 4 million visitors, the Youth and Sports Ministry, through the National Youth and Sports Department, has activated the HBN celebration at the grassroots level by implementing the Semarak HBN initiative in 113 districts nationwide since May 15. At the national level, the Semarak HBN initiative has been further enlivened by the inclusion of the National Youth Convention; eSports games and activities; career and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) carnivals; as well as programmes on fitness, leadership, arts, music and culture and awareness of mental health and cyberbullying. Other programmes include the Suara Belia (Voice of the Youth) podcast; the recitation of the Malaysian Youth Pledge at various levels; the 2025 HBN Special Islamic Affairs Premier Forum; and the implementation of Special Friday sermons nationwide through the collaboration of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) and state Islamic religious departments. "Conceptualised as a festival and based on 15 segments/ports, it is an initiative with a 'youth for youth' approach that is designed to meet the needs and wants of today's youth.
