ID.Buzz Could Get Compact Sibling As VW Evaluates New EV Plans

ID.Buzz Could Get Compact Sibling As VW Evaluates New EV Plans

Miami Heralda day ago

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is one of the most cheerful new family vehicles you can buy, but its starting price of $59,995 limits its appeal. That's still far more expensive than conventional gas or hybrid minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica. However, it looks like a smaller, cheaper ID.Buzz sibling could be on the way, based on a new report by Autocar.
The report suggests that the new VW would replace the Touran, an MPV that has never been sold in the United States, given our market's preference for SUVs. Currently being internally reviewed by Volkswagen, the potential Touran replacement could draw inspiration from one of the brand's most exciting concepts.
The Budd-E was the first VW model to be based on the MEB modular platform that now underpins models like the ID.4, ID.7 and ID.Buzz. The electric minivan concept still looks ultra-modern today, with its wraparound windshield, two-tone body, and bold face with sleek lighting.
It's this concept that could inspire the Touran replacement, but this is just one of several older MPV concepts VW is reviewing. The minimal overhangs and flat floor will maximize interior space but keep the proportions tight, which is exactly why this type of vehicle excels. According to insiders, new sliding door and seat designs are being considered to make this vehicle as versatile as possible.
Powering the Touran replacement could be a choice of single or dual electric motors. To keep the price low enough, an output of around 200 to 250 hp seems reasonable, given that the larger ID.Buzz manages between 282 and 335 hp. The ID.Buzz and ID.4 are rear-wheel drive as standard, but its smaller sibling may rely on front-wheel drive as standard.
Battery capacities of 60 to 80 kWh have been suggested as likely. EVs of this size would be expected to have a range of at least 240 miles or so to be competitive.
At this point, it seems unlikely that a smaller version of the ID.Buzz would be sold here. Such a vehicle would clash with the ID.4 in terms of price - the priciest ID.4 starts at just below the price of the ID.Buzz. Besides this, few Americans choose SUVs over minivans or MPVs.
The smaller and cheaper ID.Buzz is expected to be launched by 2027 at the earliest, assuming Volkswagen does decide to put it into production. If it has the same nostalgic styling and clever versatility of the ID.Buzz, but at a lower price, it'll be one of VW's top EVs.

Nissan stuns vehicle buyers with new ultra-affordable electric vehicle — and it's far from bare-bones

Nissan is stepping up its electric vehicle game by cutting back the price of its newest EV. According to Electrek, the new Nissan N7 sedan, which was recently unveiled at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, starts at only $16,500. This may be Nissan's attempt at competing with Chinese EV giant BYD, which recently released the Qin L for $16,500. Despite the low price, the N7 isn't some bare-bones EV without any flashy smart tech. It comes with high-speed navigation, city memory navigation, as well as intelligent parking, all of which can be controlled using the 15.6-inch infotainment monitor. It also comes with AI voice interaction. The N7 doesn't sacrifice much on range either. It comes in five different models, which can trek from 316 miles on a single charge to 388. One of the reasons Nissan is able to sell the N7 for so cheap is because it has a lithium iron phosphate battery pack rather than a lithium-ion battery made using nickel, manganese, and cobalt like a lot of EVs. LFP batteries are significantly cheaper to manufacture. Volkswagen used the same strategy in manufacturing its new affordable EV, the ID.2. Unfortunately, none of the affordable EVs mentioned here will be hitting the streets in the United States any time soon, though that could always change with enough consumer demand. For now, the N7 and Qin L are focused on the Chinese market, and the ID.2 is targeting the European market. EVs already have well-known money-saving benefits over gas-powered vehicles in that they don't require as much maintenance and the driver doesn't need to worry about fluctuating gas prices. That's on top of the fact that EVs don't produce planet-warming pollution that contributes to extreme weather events. But for some, EVs might not have been an option because they're generally a little more expensive. Cheaper EVs such as the N7 could convince consumers to make their next car an EV. Home solar can increase the savings from owning an EV by cutting charging costs. Charging at home using solar power is cheaper than using public charging stations or energy from the grid. EnergySage provides homeowners with a free service that helps them compare quotes from vetted solar installers as well as any rebates or tax incentives for going solar. Additionally, Palmetto has a solar leasing program called LightReach, which helps you install panels on your home for no money down and still lock in low energy rates. Volkswagen adopts an autonomous solution: Innoviz Q&A

Autonomous driving tech is seeing more new solutions applied in robotaxis and busses. Uber has partnered with Volkswagen to deploy autonomous ID. Buzz AD vehicles as robotaxis in the US. Supplier of LiDAR solutions, Innoviz, recently announced a collaboration with Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility to accelerate the integration of InnovizTwo LiDAR units into the ID. Buzz AD, VW's L4 autonomous shuttle. Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, with its brand MOIA, will integrate nine Innoviz LiDARs into each ID. Buzz AD to enable advanced urban autonomous driving. We spoke to Elad Hofstetter, chief business officer, Innoviz, to learn more about the partnership, and to discuss the testing the LiDAR technology undergoes. Just Auto (JA): How did the company begin working with Volkswagen? Elad Hofstetter (EH): We were nominated to work on several of the Volkswagen programs. The programs include different platforms, different vehicle types, and different applications. There are highway applications which are L3 autonomous driving and there are also applications of L4 like the ID Buzz shuttle, which drives in urban environments. As part of this platforms solution with Volkswagen, Innoviz is providing two LiDAR types, the InnovizTwo long range, and the InnovizTwo short range, meaning there are nine LiDARS on each vehicle. Mobileye are also part of this program; they're providing this solution for lots of different customers, suppliers and platforms, around the world. They're providing their L4 platform using our LiDARs for lots of different global partners. How is the LiDAR technology able to work in a busy, urban environment? In a very busy environment, when there's lots of different details, it's important to have high resolution of the LiDAR so you can distinguish between things. Otherwise, you'll have smearing and lots of different objects might be interpreted as one large one. You need to be able to detect vehicles, and also see the 'cracks'- the spacing between vehicles; if a pedestrian crosses through you need to separate between this, so you need a very high and dense resolution in order to do so. This is one of the reasons that Volkswagen have chosen our LiDAR. We provide both the large coverage of field of view (that you need to see in different parts), but can also distinguish between small obstacles, and not just large ones. What testing did the technology undergo before deployment? We needed to drag the LiDAR through the mud. It needs to have very rigorous environmental tests. We wanted to test it under cold conditions, warm conditions, changing conditions, rain, fog, snow, and hail. You need to test it in different environments, in different locations, because different locations have different road types and vibration profiles on the vehicle. You need to take the LiDAR to the extreme - more extreme than what the vehicles go through - in order to absolutely ensure that you can endure what the vehicles go through. We needed to drag the LiDAR through the mud. It needs to have very rigorous environmental tests. The vehicle will not self-drive without the LiDAR. A few months ago we did a winter campaign in which we took our LiDAR driving through Scandinavia in very harsh cold conditions, to test its functionality. We also have ovens for low and high temperature at our labs to test for all of these climate conditions. How do you see LiDAR technology helping the next generation of vehicles? We see it growing rapidly. In 2019 there was a lot of hype around autonomous driving, when everyone felt or thought that autonomous vehicles might be just around the corner. With time, the market and everyone realized that the reality is a little more complicated than that. Those who work in this field understood the full complexity. Waymo announced that 22% of the drives/rides in San Francisco are with their autonomous vehicles - this is fully autonomous. This was in San Francisco, but it could be also London, Paris, or any other city; this is probably going to come faster than we expect. It doesn't mean that tomorrow there will be only autonomous vehicles around us, but it's coming, and this is for the L4 and the L3 as well. To date, there are two brands with an L4 system. One of them is BMW with Innoviz, our first generation InnovizOne, and the other one is Mercedes. These are only two, but more are expected to come, but it takes time - patience is needed. Do you see autonomous vehicles being more passenger focused or business focused? In terms of the taxis, they're a business case. If they get to a certain dollar per kilometre, the company can justify putting sensors and systems on a car. They're replacing a driver, and it could drive let's say 24/7, going for some maintenance every so often. The cost per dollar is improving over time - we can see it with Waymo. Volkswagen and Uber are not small platforms, so these platforms are becoming more and more relevant. You need to meet the performance, you need to meet the environmental conditions, but you need to meet cost requirements. If it's too costly, it will never play for a consumer car. But with volumes, these costs go down dramatically. So, which will grow faster? I don't know, but both are promising.
