Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan aims to secure NHL roster spot following Mitch Marner trade

After parting ways with star winger Mitch Marner in a blockbuster sign-and-trade with the Vegas Golden Knights, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a period of transition.

While they've added depth through trades, one name creating buzz is 2023 first-round pick Easton Cowan. The 19-year-old forward is determined to turn heads at training camp and stake his claim on the Leafs' opening night roster.
Easton Cowan targets NHL debut as Maple Leafs enter new era after Mitch Marner trade
With Marner's departure freeing up cap space and creating a void in Toronto's top six, the Maple Leafs have retooled by acquiring Matias Maccelli, Nicolas Roy, and Dakota Joshua. But Cowan, the 28th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft could be the most intriguing addition to the offensive mix.
Known for his speed, two-way play, and high-pressure performance, Cowan is expected to seriously challenge for a roster spot this fall.
Cowan starred with the OHL's London Knights, scoring 83 goals and 218 points in 168 games over three seasons. His playoff numbers were even more impressive: 94 points in 55 games, including key performances in two OHL championships and a Memorial Cup victory this past season. His coach, Dale Hunter, recently endorsed his NHL readiness on The FAN Morning Show, stating:
'He's going to push to make the team...
I'm betting he's going to make it.'
Maple Leafs' crowded forward lineup creates uphill battle for Easton Cowan's NHL roster spot
Despite his standout junior résumé and growing confidence, Cowan faces an uphill battle. Toronto already has 14 forwards on one-way NHL deals for 2025–26, not including restricted free agent Nicholas Robertson, whose future with the team remains uncertain amid trade speculation.
If Robertson stays, Cowan's route to the NHL becomes narrower, but there could still be opportunities.

He may need to outplay veterans like Calle Järnkrok or Michael Pezzetta to earn a bottom-six role, with the possibility of moving up the lineup as the season progresses. Cowan has publicly stated that he thrives under pressure and welcomes the challenge of high-stakes environments like Toronto.
Easton Cowan's NHL readiness is becoming hard to ignore. With a strong development camp and training camp ahead, he has the tools, confidence, and timing to make a serious push. As the Maple Leafs shift into a post-Marner era, Cowan's rise could become one of the most compelling storylines of the season.

Mohammedan SC at bottom with fifth straight loss

Kolkata: Merely a couple of seasons ago, Mohammedan SC were looking a whole different beast, having emerged as the team to beat in local league in the post-Covid times with a hat-trick of Calcutta Football League titles. That period of domination now seems to be too fleeting to be true as Mohammedan SC, instead of fighting for the championship, are increasingly facing the possibility of finding themselves in a battle for survival in the 2025-2026 season of the CFL. The latest setback in their woeful start to the season came in the form of a 0-1 defeat former champions Peerless SC at the Naihati stadium on Monday. Manoranjan Singh struck the all-important goal in the 60th minute for Peerless. Who is Devon Levi? Top Canadian goalie signs two-year NHL deal with Buffalo Sabres

Devon Levi signs two-year deal with Buffalo Sabres (Credit: Getty Images) The Buffalo Sabres just made a big move for their future by signing Devon Levi, one of Canada's most promising young goaltenders, to a two-year NHL contract worth $1.625 million. The 23-year-old restricted free agent is stepping up with hopes of becoming a long-term fixture in Buffalo's net. Sabres Sign Goaltender Devon Levi to 2-Year Contract Buffalo Sabres strengthen goalie lineup with Devon Levi signing Levi struggled in limited NHL action last season, going 2-7-0 with a 4.12 goals-against average (GAA) and a .872 save percentage in nine games, but found success in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Rochester Americans. There, he posted an impressive 25-13-4 record with a 2.20 GAA and .919 save percentage across 42 games, proving he's more than just a prospect. From Quebec streets to NHL spotlight: Devon Levi's early beginnings Devon Levi hails from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, a suburb of Montreal, Quebec. Starting with street hockey at age 4, Levi's passion grew quickly. By 14, he was the youngest player in the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League. A consistent academic performer, he was even valedictorian at West Island College. He also speaks both English and French and comes from a tech-savvy family; his parents run a software company. That all changed after a blockbuster trade in 2021, when Buffalo acquired him and a first-round pick in exchange for Sam Reinhart. With two Mike Richter Awards at Northeastern University and a record-breaking .952 save percentage in 2021–22, Levi became a name to remember. International ice and college glory: Devon Levi's standout moment Levi has been nothing short of spectacular on the international stage. He helped Team Canada earn a silver medal at the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, setting a save percentage record of .964, better than Carey Price's all-time best. He was also part of the gold-winning team at the 2023 IIHF World Championship and named to Team Canada for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Now signed and ready, Devon Levi is set to compete for a bigger role in Buffalo's goaltending rotation. With Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Eric Comrie already in the mix, the battle will be fierce. But if Levi's AHL numbers are any sign of what's to come, the Buffalo Sabres may have just secured their goaltender of the future. Watch: Noah Lyles Shoved By Kenny Bednarek After Winning 200 Meters At US Nationals

Noah Lyles won the 200m at the U.S. track championships, overtaking Kenny Bednarek and sparking a post-race confrontation. Noah Lyles delivered the day's most significant performance on the track, overtaking Kenny Bednarek for the win and then taunting him. Bednarek responded with a two-handed shove after the finish line, accompanied by heated words and a challenge for a rematch that can't come soon enough. Sunday's U.S. track championships turned physical when Lyles and Bednarek engaged in a shoving and shouting match as they finished the hotly contested 200-meter final at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. 'Like I've said before, Noah's going be Noah," Bednarek remarked. 'If he wants to stare me down, that's fine." Lyles surpassed Bednarek and finished in 19.63 seconds for a .04-second victory, setting up a rematch at the world championships on September 19 in Tokyo. The real drama unfolded after the finish line. There was jawing, shoving, and Lyles turning around, backpedaling, extending his arms, and bouncing like a boxer before throwing more choice words at Bednarek. Their confrontation spilled into what is usually a celebratory NBC winner's interview. 'If you've got a problem, I expect a call," Bednarek said, as the network's Lewis Johnson moved the mic between them. Although they shook hands during the tense post-race moment, Bednarek remained fired up well after leaving the track. 'The summary is, don't do that to me," Bednarek said. 'I don't do any of that stuff. It's not good character right there. That's pretty much it. At the end of the day, he won the race. I've got to give him props. He was the better man today." Lyles' victory was expected, being the three-time defending world champion who must overcome Bednarek to make it four in Tokyo. Bednarek was asked what Lyles said as he gloated after securing his fifth national title at his favourite distance. 'What he said didn't matter, it's just what he did," Bednarek stated. 'Unsportsmanlike (expletive) and I don't deal with that. It's a respect factor. He's fresh. Last time we lined it up, I beat him, that's all I can say. Next time we line up, I'm going to win. That's all that matters." When asked about his role in the conflict, Lyles was reserved: 'On coach's orders, no comment." Track desperately needs some energy in the post-Olympic year and post-Usain Bolt era. Who better to provide it than Lyles, the sport's most engaging character this side of Sha'Carri Richardson, who was again in off-the-track headlines this weekend. Up to now, track media and the athletes themselves have tried to generate rivalries between Lyles and Erriyon Knighton (fizzled), or Lyles and Letsile Tebogo (beat him in the Olympics last year) or, of course, between Lyles and NFL receiver Tyreek Hill (supposed grudge match never took place). It turns out, they probably should have looked at the lane next to him. Bednarek has won silver and beaten Lyles the last two times they've lined up in the 200 at the Olympics, even though Lyles faced issues at both—mental health in Tokyo, and COVID in Paris. Bednarek referenced some long-simmering issues between them. 'Just some personal stuff we've got to handle," he said. But when asked for more details about the burgeoning rivalry, Lyles remained focused on his challenging year after an April injury kept him out of spikes until June. 'If they ain't gonna beat me now, they ain't gonna beat me ever," Lyles said. Bednarek isn't so sure. The 200 final was Bednarek's fifth race of the week, including three heats of the 100 meters, where he won the final Friday. Lyles, who has an automatic spot at worlds in that event as the defending champion, only ran one heat of the 100. 'We'll go fresh and we'll see what happens," Bednarek said. 'Because I'm very confident I can beat him. That's all I can say." Other Major Highlights Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the 200 in a personal-best time of 21.84 seconds, while Olympic champion Gabby Thomas had to wait a few anxious moments to see if she earned a spot on the world team. She did, as her name popped up in third place. It was a winning weekend for Jefferson-Wooden, who also captured the 100 on Friday. She will be joined in the 100 at worlds by Richardson, who has an automatic spot as the defending champion. Richardson didn't advance to the final in the 200. The women's 400 hurdles was wide open with Olympic champion and world-record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone electing to focus on the open 400 (she won the event Saturday). Dalilah Muhammad, 35, took control and cruised to the win. One of the afternoon's most exciting finishes was in the men's 800 meters, where 2019 world champion Donavan Brazier used a strong kick to hold off 16-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus and Bryce Hoppel. In the 5,000 meters, Shelby Houlihan held off Elise Cranny by less than a second to win the title. Houlihan returned to the track this year after serving a four-year doping ban. The former U.S. record holder in the 5,000 tested positive after eating a burrito she claimed was tainted with a performance-enhancing drug.
