Florida Panthers React to NHL's Historic Aleksander Barkov Announcement
When the Florida Panthers drafted center Aleksander Barkov No. 2 overall back in 2013, they envisioned him as the face of their franchise for years to come.

Barkov has more than lived up to those expectations, leading the Panthers to a Stanley Cup championship last year and back to the Final this year while making two NHL All-Star teams and winning two Frank J. Selke Trophies, given annually to 'the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game,' and a Lady Byng Trophy along the way, given to 'the player who best combines sportsmanship, gentlemanly conduct, and high playing ability.'
Barkov added to his trophy case on Monday when the NHL announced that the Panthers' 29-year-old captain won his third Selke Trophy as well as his first King Clancy Memorial Trophy, given annually to 'the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.'

Barkov became the first player in NHL history to win both the Selke and King Clancy trophies in the same season, and he's just the fourth player to win both awards during his career.

The Panthers celebrated Barkov's notable achievements with a congratulatory social media post.
'Congrats, Cap! Barky won the Frank J. Selke Trophy and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy 👏' the Panthers posted on X.
Barkov joined an exclusive group that includes Patrice Bergeron, Bob Gainey, Pavel Datsyuk, Jere Lehtinen, and Guy Carbonneau as the only players to win the Selke three or more times. Bergeron, a recently retired Boston Bruins legend, holds the record with six wins and Gainey is second with four wins.
The 6-foot-3 Finn scored 20 goals and 71 points this season, and he led the Panthers with 51 assists and 34 takeaways.

He also ranked fourth in the NHL in faceoff win percentage (56.5%) among centers with at least 1,000 faceoffs. It was the eighth straight season his faceoff percentage was above 50. Barkov also logged four shorthanded points this season, one shy of his career high.

Canadian government will not appeal sexual assault acquittal of 5 hockey players, lawyer says
LONDON, Ontario -- A lawyer for one of five former world junior hockey players acquitted of sexual assault charges last month says the Canadian government will not appeal the judge's ruling. Daniel Brown, who represents Alex Formenton, said in an email Thursday he had been informed of that decision. Formenton, Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote were all acquitted of sexual assault. McLeod was also acquitted of a separate charge of being a party to the offense of sexual assault. The defense deemed the ruling a 'resounding vindication,' while the complainant's lawyer called it devastating. Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia found the complainant's testimony was not credible or reliable and that there were 'troubling aspects' in how she delivered some of her evidence about the 2018 encounter. The judge said the complainant tended to blame others for inconsistencies in her narrative and exaggerated her level of intoxication that night. The NHL said at the time of the ruling the players — none of whom is currently on an NHL roster or has an active contract — remained ineligible to play in the league while it reviews the judge's findings, adding in a statement that the allegations in the case were disturbing, even if not determined to be criminal. The Players' Association said the five should have the opportunity to return to the ice, adding that the league's eligibility ruling was 'inconsistent' with discipline procedures in the collective bargaining agreement.

The Washington Capitals know that they're in the twilight of the Alex Ovechkin era, and though there's been plenty of conversation surrounding the captain's future after this year, it's time to put those talks to an end. Ovechkin is entering his 21st NHL season, which also marks the final year of the five-year extension he signed back in 2021. When it comes to whether or not he'll continue his NHL career, he made it clear he has not made a decision. "To be honest with you, I haven't thought about it yet, but we'll see what's going to happen," Ovechkin said at breakdown day. "Obviously, I'm going to try to do my best to be able to do well next year, and we'll see." His answer hasn't changed as the summer goes on, with him calling rumors of his retirement "pure nonsense" while he and the team have affirmed that he remains undecided on his future beyond next season. That said, the discussion should stop there, because, as general manager Chris Patrick pointed out to on Thursday that he's earned the right to make the decision about his future on his own, and at the time he sees fit.
